Mask and Merriment at The Venice Carnival

Infused with romance and mystery, decadence and revelry, <a href="http://www.carnivalofvenice.com/area.asp?id=4&desc=The+Venice+Carnival+Indepentent+Guide+since+1998 <http://www.carnivalofvenice.com/area.asp?id=4&desc=The+Venice+Carnival+Indepentent+Guide+since+1998> " target="_blank">The Venice Carnival has been luring masked merrymakers to the canal-crossed city for centuries. This year's event takes place through February 16, and with a theme like "Sensation: 6 senses for 6 districts," it's sure to be a magnificent spectacle of food, drink, music, dancing, and fabulous costumes.

Begin your grand Carnival experience with hot chocolate and sweets in the Hotel Danieli's elegant lounge, then cap off the evening with dinner and minuet dancing beneath the Murano glass chandeliers of the hotel's lavish ballroom. "Le Rois Dansent" is an opulent party modeled after one of Louis XIV's own extravagant affairs, while "Casanova's Ball" promises an evening of glittering seduction in candlelit gardens and palace ballrooms. Concerts, cocktail parties, historic parades, festivals of period costume, gondola tours, and dozens of costume balls round out the Venice Carnival's rich program. You'll be swirling with delight from morning's Baroque brunches, through the day's dizzying array of activities, until you collapse upon your regal bed at the marvelous Hotel Danieli, a 14th century palazzo outfitted for a legendary noble like the Sun King himself. Just remember to pack a costume and mask to match the extravagance of it all, or contact the hotel for advice on where to rent them. Venice Carnival is one of the world's oldest and most beloved traditions. Ever been? Share your stories.

Experience Life in Churchill's Bunker in London

Winston Churchill is one of the most heroic figures of the World War II era, embodying the British ideal of the stiff upper lip and passionate resolve to never give up, no matter the odds. Visitors to London can learn more about the man and his struggles during the war at the <a href="http://cwr.iwm.org.uk/server/show/nav.00f"target="_blank">Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms, a delightful museum near St. James Park filled with an eclectic collection of Churchill memorabilia and artifacts. Start off at the Lifeline exhibit, a 15-meter-long interactive table on which visitors can access information from every year of Churchill's life, down to specific weeks and days. Then, armed with historical perspective, venture into the Cabinet War Rooms, which were used as shelter for the heart of government and military command. Built in the basement of a Whitehall building in 1938, it housed Churchill and his advisers as they plotted their strategy amid sustained aerial bombardments. The Map Room, Cabinet Room, Transatlantic Telephone Room, and Churchill's Room have all been preserved in the condition they were left when the war ended in 1945, providing a vivid glimpse into his "finest hour." There's even a recreation of his wife Clementine's bedroom, part of a suite of nine rooms opened only in 2003 containing the original furnishings and items from the war years. It's one of London's most fascinating museums and a must-see for students of 20th century history. Starwood has hotels throughout London, including the <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=412"target="_blank">Sheraton Park Tower, London.

Incredible Sushi in Honolulu

If ever there was a place destined to be a great town for sushi (outside of Japan, of course) it would be Hawaii. Smack dab in the middle of the ocean, with a large Japanese-American population and a major Japanese tourism base, sushi in Honolulu is world class. Stake out a spot at the bar at these spots when you stay at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani.

At Sushi Sasabune, you can order off the menu only at a table: the bar is reserved for those willing to let chef-owner Seiji Kumagawa decide what to feed them. And those who do are rewarded handsomely. Possible dishes include squid stuffed with crab, baked oysters, blue shrimp and some of the finest toro available. Be prepared to spend $300 for two, however.

Mitch's Fish Market & Sushi Bar is mostly a fish market, run by South African expats. But don't discount it for its low-budget looks — just head to the sushi bar (stopping beforehand to pick up some drinks; it's BYOB) and put yourself in the chefs' capable hands for some of the best sashimi you'll ever taste. The specialty of the house is live lobster sashimi, expertly sliced and accompanied by a miso soup made with the rest of the lobster.

If you're looking for more style with your rolls, head to Doraku, which gives sushi a "hipster vibe" despite its shopping mall locale.

Starwood Insider - Peter Foreman - Introducing the Westin Tianjin

Peter Foreman is the Director of Sales & Marketing at Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur and thelobby.com's expert on Asia.

Visitors to Tianjin now have a choice of <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=384"target="_blank">Sheraton Tianjin Hotel or the brand new <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3159"target="_blank">Westin Tianjin. The new <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3159"target="_blank">Westin Tianjin is located in the Wue Da Dao area, an old <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concessions_in_Tianjin#British_concession_.281860-1943.29"target="_blank">British Concession area. The hotel forms part of a mixed use development on Nanjing Road in the center of the city with The Emperor Place retail shopping mall and corporate offices. The lobby features a 16 meter high ceiling while the 275 guest rooms and suites provide the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. Rooms feature Westin's signature Heavenly Beds, Herman Miller furnishings, giant LCD TV's and iPod docking stations. Look towards the heavens through a glass roof over the indoor 25 meter heated swimming pool.

While it may not be a household name, the city of <a href="http://www.tj.gov.cn/english/"target="_blank">Tianjin is the sixth largest in the People's Republic of China and was the host of the football portion of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The 120 kilometer journey from Beijing takes just 29 minutes at speeds up to 350KM/HR on the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway at a cost of just RMB58 each way (approximately $9 US). The city is a key manufacturing hub for China and home to many multi-national companies and is one of the biggest sea ports in the world. Besides being an industrial city, Tianjin has many old <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concessions_in_Tianjin"target="_blank">concession areas.

My tip: be sure to visit the Tianjin Eye, a 120 meter high Ferris Wheel, uniquely built over the Chihai Bridge. It's a spectacular way to view this exciting Chinese destination.

A collaboration between world-renowned techno composer/symphony collaborator/DJ Jeff Mills (listen to the song that inspired the store in this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5DY1VzUXLg"target="_blank">video) and wife Yoko Uozumi (pictured), it's also a labor of love inspired by the couple's extensive international travels, which is heavy on exposure to the creative arts. The current autumn/winter fashion collection includes mixed pieces by UK-based designer Jean-Pierre Braganza, leather outerwear from Berlin's Firma, tops and cardigans from Obscur of Sweden, and tees and cashmere sweaters from Japan's 24/7. Soon, the new spring/summer collection will be ushered into Gamma Player. Music is similarly curated from a global perspective, and features special releases from Mills and his Axis Records, a label with a loyal, multicultural following.

Gamma Player would be a great stop along a Wicker Park shopping tour, an area that's great for those who love the intersection of music and style. Stay at <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=2005"target="_blank">W Chicago - Lakeshore and you'll be within an easy distance to enjoy this fun and funky neighborhood. What are your favorite shops that integrate the arts?

Passing Through the Gateway to the West in St. Louis

St. Louis, Missouri earned the nickname "Gateway to the West" back in the 1800's for the crucial role it played in the westward expansion of the United States. Today, the west is pretty well settled, but the city's most prominent landmark stands as an enduring reminder of the ways it shaped the country. At 630 feet, the <a href="http://www.gatewayarch.com/Arch/"target="_blank">Gateway Arch is the tallest national monument in the United States, towering over the <a href="http://www.nps.gov/jeff/index.htm"target="_blank">Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and giving St. Louis an unmistakable skyline. Opened to the public in 1965, the arch was designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and is truly a wonder of modern engineering. The cross sections of its legs are formed by equilateral triangles made of concrete and steel, and are covered with shiny stainless steel that reflects the sun even on cloudy days. The interior of the arch is hollow, allowing a cutting-edge elevator system with gimbaled cars that resemble ferris wheel gondolas to ferry visitors to an observation deck at the top. Once at the arched observation area, the view is nothing short of breathtaking, with a scenic panorama of the Mississippi River, southern Illinois, and the city of St. Louis spread out before you. You'll understand why so many 19th century settlers decided to make a home right here. Starwood has six St. Louis hotels, including the luxurious <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1248"target="_blank">Westin St. Louis.

Introducing Aloft Milwaukee Downtown

Whether you're in town for business, pleasure, or a little of both, you'll find plenty to keep you entertained in Milwaukee. Wisconsin's largest city boasts multinational corporations, a thriving arts scene, and, as of January, a great new hotel as well with the opening of <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3254"target="_blank">Aloft Milwaukee Downtown. Located in central Milwaukee, this exciting new destination is just minutes from some of the biggest attractions in "Brew City." Get your bearings with a stroll along the scenic <a href="http://www.mkedcd.org/DowntownMilwaukee/RiverWalk/index.html"target="_blank">Milwaukee Riverwalk, a pedestrian walkway along the Milwaukee River dotted with public art installations and lined with shops, galleries, and restaurants. Then take an hour or two to appreciate the masterpieces on display at the <a href="http://www.mam.org/"target="_blank">Milwaukee Art Museum, whose famous Santiago Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion houses a reception hall, auditorium, café, store, and 10,000 square feet of gallery space. Motorcycle enthusiasts won't want to miss the <a href="http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/content/pages/hd_museum/museum.jsp?locale=en_us"target="_blank">Harley-Davidson Museum, which has bikes that date back to the company's founding in 1903, while the <a href="http://www.pabstmansion.com/"target="_blank">Pabst Mansion provides a vivid glimpse at the private life of one of the country's most famous beer barons. But whatever you do, be sure to set aside some time to explore the hotel's many features, from its Splash indoor pool to the re:mix lounge, where you can work, play, and relax with a drink from the w xyz bar. For more information or to book a stay, visit <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3254"target="_blank">here and discover the best of Milwaukee.

Eating Out at the Vancouver Winter Olympics

Headed to Vancouver for the Winter Olympics? We're a bit jealous of you here at TheLobby HQ. However, since you're going, let me give you a bit of advice: try not to get gouged. Many restaurants have upped their prices for the Games, so do your homework before you arrive by checking menus and calling to compare prices. Here are a couple options to consider while you're staying at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre:

The Blue Water Cafe makes the most of Vancouver's seafood bounty, with mounds of fresh raw oysters, uni and glistening sashimi at the raw bar, and perfectly cooked salmon and other fish straight from the piers. Demand is high for this high-profile restaurant, so they've set up a special Olympics reservation page.

For a more relaxed atmosphere, Pourhouse may appeal. Its focus surrounds its 1920's bar and some excellent drinks, but the food is recommended too.

Vancouver's Chinese food is among the best in the world, and the best of the city is at Lin Chinese Cuisine. Locals praise the xiao long bao, or soup dumplings, but there's plenty else on the menu worth exploring. Best of all, it's a great value, with entree prices topping out at C$12.99 except for a handful of specialties.

Sunday in the City: The Art Markets of Amsterdam

As a center for fine art, Amsterdam has few peers. After all, it's the home of <a href="http://homepages.luc.edu/~avande1/dutchmst.html"target="_blank">Dutch Masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer, who defined 17th century European art and still exert a powerful draw. Once you've seen the masterpieces in the local museums, you might have the urge to upgrade your personal art collection, or pick up a painting as a souvenir. Fortunately, there are two excellent art markets in the city center where local artists peddle their wares and are happy to chat with visitors about their technique, training, and inspiration. Organized by the Amsterdam International Artists Foundation, the <a href="http://www.artplein-spui.nl/general.html"target="_blank">Spui Art Market (pictured) is a fine spot to find traditional artwork, with the recent work of 60 Dutch and international professional artists. You can browse their wares every Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in picturesque open-air surroundings as the harp/guitar duo ''Sunflower'' plays live music in the background. Meanwhile, the <a href="http://home.kpn.nl/merkw/pagina5.html"target="_blank">Thorbeckeplein Art Market is the place to go for modern art. About 25 Dutch artists converge on the Thorbeckeplein every Sunday to display cutting edge works that will soon make their way to galleries and museums. Who knows, you might just end up with a painting by a future Dutch master hanging on your wall. Starwood has two hotels in Amsterdam: the <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=100"target="_blank">Hotel Pulitzer, Amsterdam and the <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=301"target="_blank">Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel and Conference Center.

Nestled within the Sierra Madre mountains just 12 miles south of the city, you'll find one of the most beautiful natural areas in all of Mexico, with lush vegetation and gorgeous views of soaring mountains. The <a href="http://www.vallartabotanicalgardensac.org/index.htm"target="_blank">Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens occupy 20 acres of tropical dry forest ecosystem at 1,300 feet above sea level, with a unique mix of trees, flowers, and wildlife that you won't see anywhere else. There's a lot to experience, from the Palm Gardens, with its towering tropical trees, to the Orchid House, which cultivates these rare and beautiful flowers. There are dozens of species of Mexican wildflowers, and even a a few carnivorous plants, so keep an eye on your sandwich when you walk past those guys. Those looking for a bit of a workout can go for a nature walk along winding jungle trails, and even enjoy a refreshing dip in the crystal clear Rio Los Horcones. After a morning of adventure, settle down for a gourmet lunch at the Hacienda de Oro Restaurant, which serves salads, wood-oven baked pizza, and a full menu of Mexican and Italian dishes. Share a bottle of wine with friends and family and toast the stunning beauty of this gorgeous city on the Bahía de Banderas. Starwood has three properties in Puerto Vallarta: the <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=843"target="_blank">Sheraton Buganvilias Resort and Convention Center, the <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1090"target="_blank">Westin Resort & Spa, Puerto Vallarta, and the <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1734"target="_blank">St. Regis Punta Mita Resort.

Destination Spotlight - Xiamen, China - Shopping on Zhongshan Lu

Pedestrian streets offer a nice way to get acquainted with a city without the noisy distractions of automobile traffic and they're usually lined with all sorts of interesting shops. Xiamen, a coastal city in the Southeast region of China, boasts one of the world's most vibrant pedestrian avenues. A 20 minute drive from the glistening <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1545"target="_blank">Sheraton Xiamen Hotel, Zhongshan Lu is bustling day and night with locals and visitors on the hunt for the latest fashions, the perfect souvenir, or an authentic meal.

Stretching from the ferry landing to Siming Street, the pedestrian part of Zhongshan Road is a clean, modern expanse where a few remaining elements of traditional Chinese architecture mingle with contemporary European building style. A hundred years ago, Chinese merchants set up their stalls here, planting the seeds for the commercial buzz that quickly grew. Today, major department stores like the popular Laiya, share the scene with small shops selling a variety of local treasures. Keep an eye out for traditional costume boutiques, jewelry stores specializing in South Seas pearls and gold, and art galleries where landscapes depicting nearby islands cover the walls. Pick up Chinese magazines at bookstores like O2 and Xin Hua and peruse their cheerful, glossy images over a steaming cup of oolong at Xiangfu Spring Teashop (Number 50). The peanut soup at Huangzehe (Number 24) is known as the area's tastiest. Fill up on a bowl before setting out in search of a truly special item, a classical Chinese instrument from the 87-year-old shop Huacheng Piano (Number 123). Ever visited Zhongshan Lu shopping street? What were your favorite discoveries?

Destination Spotlight - Xiamen, China - Spend a Key Day at Gulangyu's Piano Museum

Any visit to Xiamen, China would be enhanced by a day trip to nearby Gulangyu Island, which is only minutes away. No cars are allowed here in Gulangyu, home to 16,000 people, though weary tourists do sometimes take advantage of its relatively new electric buggies which have been introduced specifically for their purpose.

Walking around, one of the most whimsical buildings you'll notice on the island is the <a href=http://www.amoymagic.com/museumpiano.htm"target="_blank">Gulangyu Piano Museum. It's actually shaped like a piano, numbering it among few notable museums in the world that actually take the form of the art contained within. Rare historical artifacts, like Abraham Lincoln's piano and the tallest piano in the world, mingle with otherwise-forgotten gems which together trace a fascinating international lineage for this most-important instrument.

The key to unlocking this melodic adventure? Stay at the <a href=http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3310"target="_blank">Le Méridien Xiamen and you'll be within convenient striking distance of the Gulangyu Piano Museum. And if you haven't had enough music after visiting, you can always hit the Gulangyu Organ Museum! Founded in 2005 by Piano Museum founder Hu Youyi, the Organ Museum houses beautiful pipe organs, reed organs, accordions, and pianicas. Whether you're a player or just appreciate the intricacy of their design, there's something to tickle your fancy here on Gulangyu.
Destination Spotlight - Xiamen, China - Where International Cuisine is Round

Like so many cities in China, Xiamen has boomed in recent years, and its dining options have expanded along with its international business. The restaurants in the Sheraton Xiamen itself are a microcosm of this trend: alongside the Cantonese and pan-Asian restaurants (pictured), there's a coffeeshop instead of a tea house, a cigar bar and a Mediterranean-influenced steak and seafood restaurant. The trend is possibly best exemplified by The House. Nominally specializing in California cuisine, you'll find French and Asian influences as well — the California-style pizzas are what usually get talked about, though. Try to get a table on the rooftop terrace of this former private residence if you can.

Part of the reason the pizza at The House gets the attention, though, is that Xiamen is a bit pizza crazy. There are Pizza Huts all over the place, and Poppa John's is moving in. AFD Western Bakery, a pastry shop and restaurant run by a Hungarian-Australian, is praised for its pizzas over almost anything else. For a great view with your pie, look no further than the posh Pizza Hut on the 24th floor of a tower near the harbor (here's a map from the hotel). The view is great, and the food and ambiance are better than you're probably imagining.

Starpick the St. Regis Monarch Beach

The town of Dana Point is a jewel on the California coastline, with gorgeous weather, a picturesque harbor, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. It's also home to the only California resort crowned with the Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star, Five-Diamond Award, the <a href="http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=1361"target="_blank">St. Regis Monarch Beach, which happens to be one of this week's <a href="http://www.starpicks.com"target="_blank">participating Starpicks properties. That means last-minute rates are at least 20% off regular rates for stays during the next eight weeks. So why not enjoy a few sunsets in this perfect retreat? This Tuscan-style resort is situated along the ocean, and its world-class luxury and stellar setting dazzle from the moment you lay eyes on it. With an exclusive private beach club, three swimming pools (including one with private cabanas), a championship golf course, the award-winning spa Gaucin, and six ocean-view restaurants, you'll find everything you need to relax and feel great. Spend your day swimming in the ocean, relaxing by the pool, or playing tennis on one of eight lighted hard courts. When evening comes, indulge in a meal at Stonehill Tavern, where Chef Michael Mina serves American cuisine in an atmosphere of elegance and refinement. As the sun sets over the ocean, have a toast to another perfect day in California. New Starpicks properties are posted every Tuesday, so <a href="http://www.starpicks.com"target="_blank">check the list for the latest deals.
