SaadiyatIsland.jpgTwo years ago, a $27 billion dollar plan to create vibrant life and art on Saadiyat Island (just half a mile from the coast of Abu Dhabi) was announced. Over the next four to five years, building should be completed for Arab outposts of some of the world's most famous museums by world-famous designers: A new Guggenheim, designed by architect Frank Gehry; a sister to Paris' iconic Louvre, as envisioned by Jean Nouvel. There will also be a maritime museum from Tadao Ando, and a strikingly modern performing arts center by Zaha Hadid.

"It's like a clean slate in a country full of resources," Gehry excitedly told the New York Times. "It's an opportunity for the world of art and culture that is not available anywhere else because you're building a desert enclave without the contextual constraints of a city."

While there are strong hopes for international tourism, Saadiyat Island is also being designed to be a livable place with options for first-class education. Housing for approximately 125,000 citizens will be built, New York University will open a campus on Saadiyat Island, and there will eventually be art schools as well. Once completed, Saadiyat Island's Cultural District will be just a short water ride from your stay at Aloft Abu Dhabi. This will be the most ambitious artistic undertaking in not only the United Arab Emirates, but for all of the Middle East, which will add to a rich history of creativity and imagination. Heritage Village.jpgAbu Dhabi is very much a 21st century city, with futuristic glass office towers and a forest of neon signs, but it was a very different place before oil was discovered in 1958. Bedouins made their living fishing, farming, hunting, and trading, working hard to survive off the meager resources of the frequently parched land. Today, visitors hoping for a glimpse of pre-boom Abu Dhabi need only stop by Emirates Heritage Village, an ethnographic museum dedicated to preserving the traditional lifestyle of Abu Dhabi and the other Emirates. Located at the Breakwater of Abu Dhabi City, the village contains a variety of structures and artifacts common to Bedouin communities, ranging from mud-brick houses and Bedouin tents to a mosque and central market where life's essentials were bought and sold. Wander into the metalworking shop, where artisans create pots, pans, and gardening implements using the most basic tools, or try your hand at pottery and weaving. Enjoy the aroma of the spice shop, where flavors from around the world were traded. Stop by the museum, with its rich display of Emirate jewelry, weaponry, and art. But don't leave without visiting the Hili Gardens, a collection of thousand year old tombs lined with palm trees, grasses, and flowers. As impressive as Abu Dhabi is today, it's not hard to see the beauty in its past as well. Starwood has five properties in Abu Dhabi, including the impressive new Aloft Abu Dhabi.

lemeridien_abudhabi.jpgAbu Dhabi has worked hard to become a cosmopolitan city, and its efforts are evidenced in the wide range of cuisines represented on the dining scene. No matter what you're craving, there's a good chance there's a restaurant serving it here, from cheeseburgers to eclairs to pad thai. In fact, you can eat your way around the world without leaving the Starwood collection of resorts and hotels. Here are a couple good spots to check out:

Lebanese Flower is one of Abu Dhabi's most popular inexpensive restaurants, serving up faithful renditions of your favorites, including falafel, hummus and kebabs — as well as a huge mixed grill big enough to share. Freshly made pita is constantly brought over from the neighboring bakery.

Craving Filipino food? Philippine House is your best bet, though some might be turned off by its cafeteria style presentation. Meanwhile, The Curry House has your Nepalese fix, mixed in with a good amount of Indian.

For a simple steak, though, look no further than the Le Bistrot at Le Méridien Abu Dhabi, where the steak frites should hit the spot.

Dubai will play host to the third annual Contemporary Art Fair Dubai, an expansive and globally-inclusive event that is open to the public from March 19-21. 65 different galleries from across the Middle East, Europe, South America, Asia and the United States were selected out of 300 applicants to curate exhibitions, readings and performances that highlight the aesthetic from each particular corner of the globe. Certain to be a program highlight: "The Art of Magical Jewels," a showcase of the glittering wearable art crafted by legendary French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels. This year's gathering includes the winners of the new Abraaj Capital Art Prize, where a total of almost a million dollars in endowment money was awarded to three international curator/artist teams to afford their works a global stage and identity. It also marks the occasion of the third annual Global Art Forum (March 18-21), bringing together artists and involved intellectuals to posit the Middle East's place within the art world and to expose the art of cities such as Tehran, Iran to a larger audience. Among the glistening new skyscrapers of Dubai lies an ancient village of mud huts, fishing boats, and a 200-year-old mosque. Created by potters and weavers thousands of years ago, a wonderful little region known as Heritage and Diving Village preserves the Emirates vivid past.

About a ten minute drive from Four Points by Sheraton Bur Dubai, this fascinating locale offers visitors a chance to explore simple houses and learn about the lifestyles of earlier civilizations of pearl divers and date farmers. Located at the mouth of Dubai Creek, the village's emblematic streets are dotted with cafes and shops that offer all varieties of handicraft items like woven baskets, colorful cotton robes, and incense burners. Culture comes alive here, and it's not uncommon to hear traditional Arabic music fill the streets, as groups of locals in Bedouin dress parade through town. Climb one of two towers, constructed in the 19th century to protect the city from attack, and get a bird's eye view of these ancient lands. Or ride a camel through the village, and take a journey into Dubai's rich past.

Dubai can seem as if the phrase "money is no object" was conjured with it in mind. Opulence is everywhere, and restaurants are no exception. Menus can be a study in decadence, and prices can verge on the ridiculous. But in this city of contrasts, you can also eat quite well for non-outrageous prices.

In the Bur Dubai neighborhood, near the Four Points by Sheraton Downtown Dubai, Special Ostadi is a rare veteran in a sea of new faces: the Iranian favorite has been open since 1978, serving its famed yogurt-marinated lamb kabobs. On the other end of the spectrum visit Ewaan, where you can enjoy a pricey but good Middle Eastern buffet while craning your neck to gawk at the world's tallest building.

For drinks, stick with hotel bars or head to the local outpost of Frankie's, where the unique Flaming Lamborghini is sure to impress your friends. Alternatively, for a respite from the din of constant construction, seek out XVA Gallery in old Bastakiya, whose inner courtyard houses a quiet cafe.

Dubai's Legendary Gold Market

Monday October 27, 2008

There's plenty that glitters in Dubai, the stunning instant-metropolis in the United Arab Emirates, but you'll definitely want a pair of dark sunglasses for a stroll through its famous gold market, lest you be blinded by the bling. The Deira Gold Souk is a covered market selling gold jewelry and ornaments from all over the world, with sparkling items ranging from carved Indian bracelets and bangles to delicate Italian earrings and necklaces. Of course, why stop at gold when you can also buy rubies, emeralds, and the most sparkling rock of them all, diamonds? You'll have a jewelry collection befitting a sheik in no time. The open-air market is located in Old Deira, and features covered walkways to protect you from the powerful sun that constantly beats down on this wealthy Middle Eastern capital. McCarthy_Dubai_Ski.jpgJeremy McCarthy is the Director of Spa Operations Development and Marketing for Starwood Hotels & Resorts and thelobby.com's expert on everything spa.

While in Dubai, I couldn't resist taking a few runs on one of the world's largest indoor ski slopes at the Mall of the Emirates, one of the world's largest indoor malls. I brought along Bobby Griffiths, the new Spa Director for the Heavenly Spa at The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina. She was a beginner, but I thought, "it's indoors, how hard can it be?" Little did I know that the top of the run (about 85 meters high) is steep enough to make even an intermediate snowboarder take pause. She got a free lesson from one of the kind instructors who helped her make her way down. And I got a cool break from the desert sun on the snowy slopes of Ski Dubai.
