800px-Turkish_and_Islamic_Arts_Museum_01.jpgThere's no city in the world like Istanbul. With its location at the crossroads of east and west, it possesses a truly unique beauty in its art and architecture. To make sense of it all, it helps to get a grounding in the foundations of Turkish style, and there's no better place to do that than the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum. Located across from the breathtaking Blue Mosque, the museum contains an unparalleled collection of Turkish art from the 8th through the 20th centuries, representing the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. From tiles and calligraphy to rugs to kilims, flawless examples of just about every native craft can be found here. The craftwork of nomadic tribes is particularly well-represented, including a fully-furnished nomad's tent. That sounds pretty nice, but I think I'd rather hang out in the museum's recreation of a 19th century Ottoman parlor. It just seems more comfortable. Opulent Edibles in Istanbul

Monday August 3, 2009

W_Istanbul.jpgThe new W Istanbul is an ideal destination for committed gourmands. It's located in Besiktas district, in a converted set of row houses, and its neighbors include some of the top restaurants in the city.

In fact, the star-studded dining starts downstairs inside the hotel, explore an outpost of Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Spice Market, which fits the cultural crossroads atmosphere of Istanbul perfectly with its blend of Southeast Asian and European flavors. A more overt East-West fusion may be had at nearby Vogue, which brings together Mediterranean and Japanese in a see-and-be-seen atmosphere.

Next door to the W is 1897 Konyali, the latest from one of the city's oldest and most respected restaurants, Konyali. 1897 takes Ottoman cuisine to new fine dining heights — lamb cooked for four hours with fresh and dried fruit, orange baklava, game-stuffed fresh pasta — ask for a tasting menu and watch the lavish dishes come streaming to your table.

For a quick bite while shopping, CafeCity is a good, affordable bet in a rather expensive neighborhood. Light entrees, salads and espresso is served either inside or in a secluded courtyard garden.

Istanbul is not lacking for scenery, with such breathtaking sights as the Blue Mosque, Agia Sofia, and the shimmering waters of the Bosphorus framing every angle of this ancient city. But high atop of a hill in the Sultanahmet neighborhood can be found the most opulent landmark of them all. For more than 400 years, Topkapi Palace was the center of the Ottoman Empire, providing a home to the sultans, their families, and the 4,000 or so attendants and servants who saw that their every need was met. Construction began in the mid-15th century, and new buildings were added throughout the years, eventually producing a palace complex with four main courtyards and dozens of buildings and smaller courtyards totaling nearly 700,000 square meters. Among its highlights are the conquerer's pavilion, where works of art and treasure were stored, the Mosque of the Agas, where the Sultan would face Mecca and pray, and the audience chamber, where viziers would come to deliver reports to the sultan. (If he didn't like the news, they might not leave the room alive.) Elsewhere in the palace is the harem, which was home to the sultan's mother and his various wives and concubines. Today, the sultans are long gone, and the palace complex serves as a museum of this bygone era, where fine artwork, mosaic tiles, and precious gems adorn every room. Take a tour and see what life was like for the rulers of the Ottoman Empire. Starwood has several Istanbul properties, including the Sheraton Istanbul Maslak Hotel.

The ice cream in Turkey is unlike anywhere else in the world. Called "dondurma," an orchid-derived ingredient gives it a stretchy, chewy texture — an attribute flamboyant dondurma stall owners take full advantage of while peddling their product. Dondurma also takes much longer to melt than typical ice cream, making it an especially fun treat on a hot day.

Mado Dondurma is a good, safe bet for to sample this truly unique treat. Ali Usta is another good option, serving 32 flavors in its well-trodden store. Both restaurants also serve a hot drink made with the same ground orchid base, also called salep. It's a warm weather drink, supposedly great for a sore throat.

But if you decide to try dondurma at a street stall during your stay at the W Istanbul — and why wouldn't you, when the service is so much fun — just remember to be on the lookout for pickpockets — they sometimes use the entertainment and hubbub around donburma stalls as cover for their activities. Keep your purse zipped and in front of you, or put your wallet in a harder-to-reach front pocket.

HenryKubjack.jpgIf you're one of those people who go crazy over miniatures, especially tiny wallpapered rooms with miniscule curtains and itsy-bitsy grandfather clocks, a new exhibition at the Rahmi M Koc Museum in Istanbul will be of great interest. "Henry Kupjack's MIniature Rooms," which runs through March 15, comprises 21 wonderful works from a master.

Kupjack learned the art of miniatures from his father Eugene Kupjack, and many of the rooms in the exhibition were constructed by the careful hands of the talented father-son duo. Most of the pieces are exact reproductions of actual, historical spaces. A Japanese farm kitchen features beamed ceilings and clay floors that were typical of the Edo period. A 17th century pirates cabin is complete with plundered booty, while an elegant New Orleans parlor features the gracious chandeliers and Victorian furniture that would have been arranged in the antebellum South. Each piece is impressive on its own, but the range of historical styles that this exhibition represents is what makes it so exceptional.

Now if only we could get Kupjack to create a replica of the Sheraton Istanbul Maslak Hotel's stunning lobby. Guess we'll just have to lounge around on one of those exquisite sofas and just imagine how the lovely space would look scaled down eighty percent or so. Funny thing is, it would look exactly the same.

Welcome Desk 200.jpgThe W Istanbul is housed in a handsome landmark building that dates back more than 130 years, but design elements from some of the 21st century's most talented artisans give it an air of modern luxury and elegance. The timeless experience begins as soon as guests enter the hotel, as their first view is of a Marmara marble check-in area where crystals, jewelry, carved stones, and curtains create an atmosphere of mystery, eroticism, and glamor. The front desk itself (pictured) is a work of modern art. Designed to resemble a jewelry box, it features original crystals under a cut-glass table top, an emerald tree pattern, and distinct mood lighting to strike the right note with arriving guests. The nearby SIP and Living Room lounge areas, meanwhile, feature the long, plush Ottoman-style seating areas preferred by the sultans along with contemporary flourishes like brass-clad columns, portable black partitions, and elegant wooden side contours. And of course, you're in for a feast for all the senses at the Spice Market restaurant. Light-colored leather seats and tables, oak wood trim, and a patterned ceiling ensure that your eyes will take in almost as much as your taste buds. It simply must be seen to be believed, so take advantage of one of the hotel's special offers and visit the future of hospitality in Istanbul.

Turkish Delight at the W Istanbul

Monday August 4, 2008

W_Istanbul.jpgThe new W Istanbul represents the very best of classic and modern styles, with roots in the Ottoman Empire and flourishes from the most forward-thinking minds of the 21st century. The hotel is located within the Akaretler Row Houses, a carefully restored series of buildings constructed in the 1870's by Sultan Abdülaziz to house the workers of the nearby Dolmabahce Palace. The hotel's exterior reflects the pervasive western influence felt in Istanbul in the early- to mid-19th century, with a neoclassical design, intricate stonework, and majestic wood accents. On the inside, designers created a space of unparalleled beauty, with the latest technology and amenities set against a backdrop of Ottoman sophistication. From the welcome area - with furniture upholstered with quilted turban material and classical handicrafts along the walls - to the Living Room Lounge, which resembles a harem with its romantic screens and sedir seating, no detail was neglected in creating an oasis of luxury and relaxation. Naturally, guest rooms and suites are fit for a sultan, with W Signature Beds, goose down pillows and duvets, flat-screen televisions, and marble bathrooms. But don't take our word for it, come see the W Istanbul for yourself and experience the best of Istanbul's past, present, and future.

When thinking about Istanbul—the most populous city in Turkey with settlement dating back to 5500 BC—one would hardly imagine contemporary designs or upscale dining and shopping. With its first move to Europe, W Hotels is bringing its edgy design and social flare to the 4th largest city in the world with W Istanbul.

Scheduled to open in April, the W Istanbul will serve as the centerpiece of the redevelopment of the landmark Akaretler Row Houses in Besiktas. The historical Row was constructed by Sultan Adbulaziz in the l870’s to house workers of the Dolmabahce Palace, a symbol of the magnificence and decadence of the 19th century Ottoman Empire. Located in the Besiktas district of Istanbul, known for its destination restaurants, bars and cafes, the W Istanbul will be in close proximity to the Bosphorus Strait and Nisantasi, the SoHo of Istanbul. The hotel will also be a stone’s throw away from the Museum of Painting and Sculpture and a short drive to the Old City, the Blue Mosque and the Istanbul Modern art museum.
