With a stunning 14th century basilica (Santa Maria del Mar) and two fabulous museums (the Picasso Museum and the Textile Museum), Barcelona's El Born barrio is a quintessential district in this diverse Spanish city. The neighborhood is steeped in medieval roots, but recent years have seen a new life buzzing through its narrow stone streets. Independent designer boutiques and chic tapas bars have made El Born one of Barcelona's most fashionable spots.

Simply wandering will offer endless delights, but for those who prefer a more structured route, follow this well-tailored plan. Of course, you'll have to tear yourself away from the extraordinary W Barcelona, a brand new silvered glass tower on the beach, but there will be plenty more time for infinity pool cocktails later on. Head directly to Iguapop Gallery at c/ Comerc 15. About a 30 minute walk from the hotel, it's a sensational space full of contemporary urban art. Then, get ready to hit the fitting room, On Land, at c/ Princesa 25, where they stock an assortment of wearable European brands. The route to your next stop will lead right past the legendary Picasso Museum, so hit it up now before continuing on to Dudua, c/ Rossic 6, where a fantastic array of adorable handmade accessories, silkscreened T-shirts, and other art objects awaits. Browse the dramatic Ann Demeulemeester coats and cutting edge Ann Sofie Back frocks at Doshaburi Doshaburi. Housed in a gothic palace at c/ L'Esparteria 15, it's just down the block from Bodega La Tinaja where you can indulge in a feast of Iberian cuisine. Now for that sweet tooth. Patisseria Bubo at c/ Caputxes 10, makes one of the best chocolate cakes in the city.

Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, or OBC, is Barcelona's world-renowned symphony orchestra that has thrilled audiences for 50 years. Currently amidst its 2009-2010 season, called "Europeans in America: Catalans in America," the OBC is presenting the creative work of current and past generations of composers who lived abroad in North America while they wrote their masterpieces, including Hindemith, Martinu, Schönberg, Waxman, Korngold, Balada, Suriñach, and Benejam. It is also approaching much more familiar works this season, including offerings by the legends Shostakovich, Beethoven, Haydn, Mahler, Stravinsky, Mussgorski, Nielsen, Prokofiev, and Bruckner.

OBC is a touring entity, though appearances in North America are rare and haven't happened in over seven years. The orchestra of choice for the most prominent Catalan composers, the OBC has released several recorded CDs. But it's undeniable the best place to hear it is right in its birthplace of Barcelona. Your stay at the W Barcelona puts you right near the center of this formidable classical music action, making an evening at the OBC a great choice to consider when planning a vacation in Spain. What orchestras have wowed you the most along your travels?

Barcelona bristles with tapas bars, bodegas and specialty food shops — so many that one of the best ways to explore all that's available is through a tour. There are dozens offered, so here are a couple good options.

If you're up for a ride, Barcelona CicloTour offers a market and tapas bike tour that takes you through the old city to some of the most iconic markets and tapas bars, beginning from a point about five minutes from Le Méridien Barcelona.

If you'd prefer to walk, try this tapas walking tour from Food Wine Tours, also within easy reach of the hotel. You'll start with a guided visit to the Boqueria Market ‐ which was founded in the 16th century and can sustain a tour just by itself — then move onto multiple spots for tapas.

For something a little different, you could take a day trip 45 minutes south of Barcelona to tour the wineries of Penedés, a region best known for its cava sparkling wine, such as Freixenet.

Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona.jpgFor a city with such a rich artistic history, Barcelona is always looking forward, with artists creating works that define contemporary life and provide a glimpse into the future. The city's biggest collection of modern art can be found at the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, a gem of a museum in the city center that specializes in Catalan and Spanish art from 1945 to the present day. Located on the Placa dels Angels, it divides its collection into three main groups, the post-war era (1940's to 1950's), the cultural revolution (1960's and 1970's), and the present period, whose story is still being written. Among its highlights are a collection of 18 paintings and paper works by Catalan surrealist painter Joan Miró, the shocking three-dimension sculptures of Angel Bados, and the magical-realist paintings of Zush, one of Spain's most renowned painters. Barcelona being what it is, the building itself is a work of modern art. Designed by American architect Richard Meier and built between 1987-1995, it alludes to Le Corbusier in its combination of straight and curved lines, dialogue between interior and exterior space, and abundance of natural light. In other words, it's a perfect place to spend a day basking in some of the greatest Spanish art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Starwood has three Barcelona properties, including the stylish new W Barcelona.

Celebrate the Jazz Century in Barcelona

Friday September 11, 2009

Jazz isn't just music, it's a lifestyle. Over the last century, jazz has influenced so many aspects of world culture. With a fantastic new exhibition, "The Jazz Century," Barcelona's Center of Contemporary Culture traces the history of the 20th century while highlighting the relationship between jazz and the visual arts.

Organized chronologically in a multi-media timeline, fascinating exhibits combine historical video footage with audio samples, photographs, and artwork to illustrate this monumental evolution. Literature by F. Scott Fitzgerald and photographs by Man Ray depict the time after World War I known as "The Jazz Age." Then there's a section on the "Harlem Renaissance," which displays vibrant paintings by the African American artist Aaron Douglas alongside text by Langston Hughes. The "Wartime" section shows how Piet Mondrian was influenced by boogie-woogie, and how Henri Matisse was so moved by jazz music that he created a book inspired by it.

"The Jazz Century," which runs through October 18, provides an excellent look back at the art of the last century and the jazz culture that influenced it. Book a room at Le Meridien Barcelona or the W Barcelona, opening October 1, and in true jazz style, be among the first to stay at this extraordinary new architectural masterpiece.

Robert Graves House.pngThe English poet Robert Graves (born 1895) lived in the charming town of Deià, Mallorca from 1929 to his death in 1985. Throughout his residency on the idyllic Spanish island, he drew scores of artistic luminaries to the area, with such stars as Ava Gardner, Alec Guinness, and Kingsley Amis dropping by to visit. Today, visitors can explore a number of Graves's former haunts, including the Graves House (pictured), the landmark 1932 building built by Graves and his companion Laura Riding. The picturesque two-story dwelling is known as Ca n'Alluny (the Far House), and has been restored to the way it looked when Graves resided here, with original furniture, wall hangings, and even light fixtures. But the house's most striking feature might be the garden, with winding paths past olive, carob, and almond trees, along orange, tangerine, and lemon groves. Elsewhere in Deià, poetic pilgrims can visit his favorite beach, Cala de Deià, as well as his final resting place in the churchyard on the hill. Starwood has three hotels on Mallorca, the St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort, the ArabellaSheraton Golf Hotel Son Vida, and the Castillo Hotel Son Vida.

One of Europe's largest annual celebrations of Basque heritage is about to take place in Bilbao. The Aste Nagusia 2009 festival will be held August 15 - 23, 2009, with a week of Basque games, music, food, and drink spilling through the downtown streets of this charming Spanish town. Aste Nagusia, also known as Semana Grande, is a general festival that seeks to share the region's Basque traditions, and visitors are treated to the sights, sounds, and smells that are unique to the area. Giant dolls tower over all onlookers as their human puppet-masters carry them through the winding streets. Strong men perform amazing feats of strength. Concerts of folk, pop, classical, and jazz carry the strains of music through the air. All the while, the savory aroma of meat and fish grilled over hot coals reminds you that you're never far from a delicious meal of marmitako (fish stew) or pintxos (Basque tapas). As the sun sets, the party really gets going, with a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the night sky. Toast the show with a glass of locally-made Txakoli, a type of dry white wine, and appreciate the many charms of this unique culture. Guests at the Sheraton Bilbao Hotel won't want to miss this feast for the senses.

Steps from Le Mérídien Barcelona, the bustling tree-lined avenue Passeig de la Gracia, leads to a wonderful neighborhood infused with Catalan heritage. Once its own village, Gracia was incorporated into the greater city of Barcelona in the late 19th century and still retains the feel of a historic old town. Its narrow streets offer an enchanting contrast to the wide boulevards that sweep across the rest of the city, allowing for a delightful afternoon browsing quaint shops, cafes, and charming squares.

Start off with a Portuguese pastry at A Casa Portuguesa on Carrer de Verdi before setting off on an excursion of the district's enticing boutiques, stocked with authentic Spanish wares. Stop into Nagore on Carrer d'Asturies for fabulous leather flats in every hue from lime to lilac. Each pair is made on the island of Menorca. Antique furniture and housewares cover the tiled floors of Atram just down the street at Rambla de Prat, 19.

Along the way be sure to keep an eye out for Modernista buildings like Casa Bonaventura Ferrer at the intersection of Passeig de Gracia and Carrer de Bonavista, or Casa Vicens, one of Antoni Gaudi's early works, located at number 24 Carrer de les Carolines. Once the sun begins to dip behind Gracia's historic balcony buildings, find a seat at Cinema Verdi, for a sublime start to the evening.
