I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for a good view, which is why I'm particularly charmed by the Azrieli Observatory. Located on the 49th floor of the Azrieli Center's Circular building (the other buildings are Square and Triangular), the Azrieli Observatory offers unparalleled views of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa area, and the mountains and sea beyond. And if you're not already familiar with the layout of the city and geography of the area, special telescopes and personal audio devices are available to help you identify and understand what you're seeing. Since one doesn't want to take in the view on an empty stomach, there's also a gourmet restaurant and bar in the sky called 2C that offers Mediterranean cuisine and vistas that just won't quit. It's a great way to get your bearings before exploring this exciting town from ground level. Down on the third floor of the Azrieli Mall, meanwhile, visitors will find the Total Tel Aviv Experience, a gripping 3-D film that explains the history of Tel Aviv, from its early days to the present. Starwood has two hotels in Tel Aviv: the Sheraton Moriah Tel Aviv and the Sheraton Tel Aviv Hotel and Towers.

Friday May 2, 2008Israel's Incredible Edible Oil Museum
Friday November 2, 2007
Visitors to Israel quickly get used to olive oil as a common component of many meals, but few take the time to learn how it gets from tree to table. The Israel Edible Oil Museum (pictured) in Haifa, just down the road from Le Méridien Haifa, is housed in an ancient stone oil factory building, and it details the history of cooking oil from its humble origins more than 2000 years ago to the modern production processes of today. The museum is part of the Shemen Edible Oil Factory, a working factory that produces a variety of different vegetable oils such as soy oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, and corn oil. Museum exhibits include early grinding and milling equipment, ancient storage vessels, and eating utensils, and a special section is devoted to Nahum Wilbush, the father of the edible oil industry in Israel. What began in 1906 as a modest olive oil processor is now one of the biggest producers in the land. Follow your tour with a delicious dinner at one of Haifa's excellent Middle Eastern restaurants and you'll feel more connected to the cuisine and the country.
