Aga Khan Palace 200.jpgMahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was one of the 20th century's most influential figures, using a philosophy of ahimsa, or non-violence, to elevate India's poor and lead the country to independence from British rule. He's so revered by Indians today that monuments dedicated to him and his accomplishments can be found all over the country, but one of the best is located in the western city of Pune. There, the Aga Khan Palace provides a home to a memorial and museum dedicated to the small, peaceful man who inspired a nation. Gandhi, his wife Kasturba, and his secretary Mahadevbhai Desai were confined to the palace during the Quit India movement, and it now has one of the nation's most extensive collections of his writings, personal possessions, and photographs, as well as the urn containing his ashes. The palace itself is an impressive structure. Built in 1892 by Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah Agakhan III, it features dozens of ornate rooms and is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. It's just the place to visit when you're looking for a few things that are right in the world. Guests at Le Méridien Pune might enjoy a visit to a palace dedicated to India's freedom movement and its most strident defender.

Le Meridien Bangalore Noir Bar 200.jpgBangalore is known as the Garden City of India, but it's one of the country's most dynamic technology and financial centers as well. Its dual identities make it a perfect destination for those traveling both for business and for pleasure, because whether you need the latest in cell phones and computers or just want a tranquil park for a relaxing stroll, you'll find what you seek in this charming city of six million. Here's another good reason to visit: Le Méridien Bangalore is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, with last-minute rates of at least 20% off regular rates for stays during the next two weekends. So check out Bangalore for a weekend and see which side suits you the best. Start by getting a sense of the city's history at the Government Museum of Bangalore. One of the oldest museums in India, the Government Museum has eighteen galleries of artifacts from the Indus valley civilizations, with an emphasis on Mohenjodaro, Halebid and Vijayanagar pieces. And when you're ready to find out how the city got its green nickname, drop by the Lalbagh Botanical Garden. The 240-acre green space has more than 1,800 species of plants native to the area, and plenty of walking trails, meadows, and picnic spots to spend a few minutes or a few hours soaking in the serenity of this well-balanced metropolis. At the end of a long day of sight-seeing or deal-making, drop by the hotel's Noir Bar (pictured) for a cocktail and think about where you'd like to travel next. New Starpicks properties are posted every Tuesday, so check the list for the latest deals.

SPG Member Corner - Rick Kolsky

Physically exhausted and spiritually over stimulated, the Sinha Six landed safely in Khajuraho, whose famed erotic temples were inspired by the Kama Sutra, and are dedicated to life, love, and joy. Interestingly, our local guide, M.P. Singh, put a decidedly feminist twist on the "strategic" intent of the Kama Sutra: man's purpose in life is to satisfy women. Contrary to popular opinion, the Kama Sutra was not simply a sex manual, but a worldly philosophy based on the concept that to rise above our desires, five elements must be present for a man: meat, fish, women, liquor, and technique. We'll let your imaginations run wild on the interpretation, but remember, the KS apparently contains more math than erotic pictures. Then again, I recall many an American male claiming to buy Playboy for the articles and interviews.

Whatever the interpretation, the five phallic-shaped temples of Western Khajuraho, built almost a thousand years ago by the Rajputs, are architectural masterpieces. The tales told in thousands of intricate stone carvings on the walls of the temples are a stunning tribute to the art and philosophy of love and devotion, especially when illuminated and softened by the slowly setting sun. According to Sunny, many of the seemingly impossible Cirque de Soleil-style love-making positions depicted in the carvings were only possible for yoga masters--which explains Anne dragging Rick to Leslie's Sunday morning Ayengar classes.

He is currently on an "around the world" spa tour with Starwood where he has been posting from his various destinations throughout the month. Today, he concludes his trip in India.

I was able to travel around India in style as The Westin Sohna Gurgaon Resort & Spa sent me with Vinod, one of the hotel drivers, in a new SUV that very much represented the personality of the hotel. Vinod was the perfect companion for my journeys. At times, he respected my privacy as I tuned into my Ipod and watched India roll by through my window. At other times, he entertained me with lengthy and fascinating conversations on the history of his country and his culture.

I don't think the experience of being in India really sank in until I watched the sun set from the Nahargarh Fort overlooking the densely populated city of Jaipur. The sun setting behind a dust and smog filled sky as the lights began to twinkle on in the city below was truly magical. But the most amazing part was the noise of the city. Even from what felt like miles above the city, I could hear a tremendous roar of the life coursing through the veins of the city as millions of families got ready for their evening meal.

When I do yoga (which is not nearly as often as it should be) I prefer the Ashtanga style (from the family of "power yoga" styles.) This means a typical yoga class for me involves being drenched in sweat and pushing myself until every muscle in my body is twitching uncontrollably. In Jaipur, India, I experience a very different kind of yoga session with Dr. Vijay Aggarwal, the Ayurvedic specialist who is now overseeing the spa at the Le Méridien Jaipur. His class is much more relaxing than what I am used to. In fact, in between every Asana or posture, he stands at ease and saysm "go for relaxation." His philosophy is that the relaxation in between postures is the most important part of the yoga training.

This makes perfect sense. After all, isn't pushing and straining to get ourselves into awkward positions something we already know how to do all to well? We all have enough practice in pushing against resistance. Where we fall short is learning how to let go in those "in-between" moments. I do feel more relaxed after Dr. Aggarwal's class, and his mantra has become mine for the rest of my travels: "go for relaxation."

The Westin Sohna-Gurgaon is Starwood's newest foray into India (with a rich pipeline of other new properties following close behind.) The Sohna region lies just outside the hustle and bustle of high-energy Delhi, and the Westin is a wellness retreat with the Heavenly Spa as the focal point. The spa offers not only the signature uplifting treatments that Heavenly Spa is known for, but also a variety of ayurvedic treatments using medicinal herbs and oils from India's ancient healing traditions.

Yoga and meditation classes ensure that mind, body and spirit are all brought back into alignment. The instructors, like Susmita (see above) are extremely well educated and happy to share the philosophy behind their teachings. In one half hour session, I learned more about the origins and concepts of yoga than I have in years of taking classes in the US.

Mattancherry%20Palace%20200.jpgTo see some of the best known examples of ancient Hindu art, pay a visit to Mattancherry Palace in Cochin, Kerala, India. The palace, located just minutes from Le Méridien Cochin Resort & Convention Centre, contains a truly breathtaking collection of Indian art dating back 500 years. Several series of murals depict legends connected to the gods Shiva, Vishnu, Kumara, and others, some of which were created in the early part of the 16th century. And buttoned-down types should be forewarned: a collection of pieces depicting the divine lover Krishna frolicking with various lovers comes across as racy even today, and must have been positively scandalous at the time of its creation. And you thought art galleries were stuffy places? Mattancherry Palace is a good example of the eclectic influences in India throughout the centuries. Originally built by the Dutch, it was later given to the Raja of Cochin to secure favorable trading privileges. The Raja and his successors accumulated priceless works of art over the centuries, making this castle gallery one of the finest places in all of India to experience the unique mural painting style of Kerala. It's a tantalizing window into the old artistic traditions of this rich culture, and worth a visit in person, as unfortunately no cameras are allowed inside.

Jaipur%20Elephant%20Festival%20200.jpgEvery March, the elephants of Jaipur, India get dressed up and strut their stuff at the Jaipur Elephant Festival, and it's quite a sight to behold. This year's festival will be held on March 21, 2008, and will begin with a procession of elephants, camels, and horses to the Chaguan grounds in Jaipur, where the elephants play polo, run races, and participate in tug-of-war matches with the humans. (A tip: don't bet against the elephants.) One of the highlights of the festival is the Best Decorated Elephant contest, which celebrates both the winning elephant and the mahout (elephant keeper) who cares for it. You can almost feel the pride in the elephants as they stand regally before an admiring crowd, adorned with jewels and fine fabrics. If you miss this year's festival, which is part of the larger Holi celebration (Spring Festival of Colors), you can still indulge in an elephant ride to Amber Palace, a stunning white marble and red sandstone fortress that used to be the capital of the Kachwaha clan. Everybody needs their elephant experience. Starwood has two properties in Jaipur: the Sheraton Rajputana Palace Hotel, Jaipur and Le Méridien Jaipur.
