Mystique Santorini 200.jpgIt's no stretch to say that the Greek island of Santorini is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. With whitewashed buildings and views from the upper caldera that are nothing short of breathtaking, it's every traveler's idea of paradise. But just because it's such an exquisite destination doesn't mean it takes a fortune to visit. People generally don't need too many travel tips for the Greek island of Mykonos. Watching the sunset is often reason enough. Wherever you go on the island, you'll find something exciting, interesting, and fun, from the flawless beaches on the southern coast to some fantastic restaurants, bars, and clubs in and around the town of Hora. But even though it's impossible to have a bad time in Mykonos, it's worth looking out for the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos, because it helps put in perspective the beautiful yet ancient island you're walking on. It houses the archaeological finds from Mykonos and nearby Reneia, and features several centuries of fine art and sculpture. A large ceramic vase known as a pithon from the Seventh Century B.C., for example, has an elaborately carved relief depicting the fall of Troy on its surface. A collection of Rhenian gravestones, meanwhile, feature intricate stonework detailing the lives of the people they commemorate. A display of ceramic and glass dolls and rings shows that artists of the time had a whimsical side as well. The museum is located just minutes from the Santa Marina Resort & Villas, Mykonos, a member of Starwood's Luxury Collection.

A Shopping Stroll in Athens

Monday June 30, 2008

Those who like to walk and observe daily life as it unfolds, while exploring picturesque streets lined with traditional shops and cafes, will certainly enjoy the intriguing neighborhoods of Athens. Areas like Monastiraki, Psyrri, Aerides, and Plaka, just to the west of Constitution Square where Hotel Grande Bretagne is situated, provide vibrant glimpses into Greek society, and offer an array of charming spots to stop into for some unique souvenirs.

Just off Ermou Street, at number 2 Aghias Theklas, Stavros Melissinos, the "Poet Sandal Maker of Athens" fashions wonderful leather sandals. Some models are named after customers from past eras, like Sophia Loren, Jackie Onassis, and Jeremy Irons. The Beatles were also frequent patrons, and even Bob Sagat has been known to stop in. Nearby, the Museum of Traditional Greek Ceramics dwells within an 18th century Turkish mosque, which overlooks Monastiraki Square. On Sundays, the area is filled with all types of vendors selling antiques and handicrafts at the open-air flea market. From here, venture a few blocks south to Adrianou Street in the Plaka. At number 120, Byzantino is the best store on the street. Expert jewelers Kostas and Giorgos create fabulous pieces with precious gemstones and 22 karat gold. Splurge on some dangly earrings dripping with intricate filigree. They'll make you feel like a Byzantine Queen.

Fruit of the Sea on Mykonos

Tuesday June 17, 2008

You'd expect the seafood to be fresh in a place like the island of Mykonos in Greece — and you'd be correct. Fantastically fresh fish, urchins and shellfish are abundant on this gem in the Mediterranean; it's no wonder there's an outpost of the world famous Nobu here.

The Santa Marina Resort & Villas' Marine Club Restaurant makes the most of the bounty of the sea, but there's plenty to savor elsewhere on the island. Seek out Edem, one of the island's oldest and most reputable restaurants. Its menu is all over the map, but the seafood and lamb dishes are consistently good. For a romantic setting, it's hard to beat Alefkandra in the "Little Venice" neighborhood of Mykonos town. The restaurant delivers a view of the beautiful Venetian-style homes whose balconies open over the sea instead of a canal.

Looking for just a quick bite? Alexis is one of many snack bars scattered around the island, but it's praised for its souvlaki and tasty burgers. For more specific restaurant advice and beyond, the Mykonos forum on Greeka.com is an excellent place to start.

SPG Member Corner - Dana McMahan

Saturday June 7, 2008

Dana_MCChan_blog_Image2.jpgI could say it was the ouzo I'd had that morning in Rhodes, Greece that led me to to the steaming room I found myself in, crouched stark naked on a stool while a woman threw bowls of hot water over me. But the ouzo, the stiff national Greek drink, had worn off when I consumed my big fat Greek lunch an hour earlier. So it wasn't the ouzo. How did I, then, one of the most modest people I know (even by our relatively prudish American standards) end up lying on a marble slab in a 7th-century Byzantine structure while a stranger soaped, scrubbed and rinsed me -- while my good friend perched nearby on her own naked stool?
Part of travel, I suppose, is shedding your usual ways and self, and trying out a new culture. The Turkish bath sayeth Wikipedia played an important role in cultures of the Middle East, serving as places of social gathering, ritual cleansing and as architectural structures, institutions, and (later) elements with special customs attached to them.
I knew I wanted to try this exotic custom, but having been the girl at the slumber parties who went into the bathroom to change into my pajamas, wasn't sure I could muster the guts to strip down and go for it.

Greece's Spinalonga Island is just a 15-minute ferry ride from the luxurious Blue Palace Resort & Spa, but a visit to this uninhabited rock is like taking a trip back in time. Spinalonga was of great strategic importance during the Venetian occupation of Crete, so a mighty fortress was erected in 1579 over the ruins of an acropolis in order to protect the port of Elounda from marauders and other unsavories with ill intent. The island fortress remained defiantly Venetian for 50 years after the Turkish conquest, providing a refuge for Christian refugees until 1715. Its last inhabitants were residents of a leper colony, which operated on the island until the advent of better and more humane care prompted its closure in 1957. Today, Spinalonga is one of the most popular day-trip destinations in Crete, drawing adventurous visitors who come to explore the towers and fortifications of this once mighty fortress and enjoy panoramic views of Crete and the surrounding sea. It isn't every day that you get to see such a well-preserved example of Venetian island fortification in the Eastern Mediterranean, so it's worth it to take a short break from the beach for a stroll through another era.

The Lions of Delos, Greece

Wednesday December 5, 2007

The Greek island of Delos is a short ferry ride from the island of Mykonos, but while Mykonos is a luxury destination boasting all the modern conveniences, visiting Delos is like traveling back in time two thousand years. This small, rocky island in the center of the Cyclades was known to the ancient Greeks as the birthplace of Apollo, the god of music, truth, and light, and Artemis, goddess of hunting. And with acres of ruins dating back to as far as 1000 B.C., it's one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece, and that's saying something. Only a small group of archaeologists are allowed to live on the island full-time, because the entirety of its 40 square kilometers is a national park, with the well-preserved ruins of an ancient Greek religious temple area scattered throughout. Fortunately, several different ferry boats provide shuttle service from Mykonos Town to Delos for a day trip you'll never forget. Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and granola bars, because to see all the ruins requires a fair bit of hiking. Highlights include the ancient theater, the Temple of Isis, and the famous lions of Delos, a row of growling lions dedicated to Apollo by the residents of nearby Naxos. A climb to the top of 112-meter Mt. Kynthos affords 360 degree views of the ancient Greek ruins against the shimmering blue waters of the Aegean Sea that are the very definition of breathtaking. You'll do plenty of walking, but if you're reasonably fit, I guarantee you'll be so awed by the overwhelming beauty of the place that you won't feel tired until you sit down on the ferry back to Mykonos. Guests at the Santa Marina Resort & Villas, a member of Starwood's Luxury Collection, won't want to miss this fascinating window into Ancient Greece.

NYC_Spa_Experience_2.jpgEarlier this month, in the midst of the hustle and bustle that is Grand Central Terminal, Luxury Spafinder Magazine hosted "The Spa Experience," a collection of offerings from spas all over the world. During the event, commuters were able to pause and de-stress in Vanderbilt Hall which was filled with diverse spa offerings including mini-massages, mini-facials, yoga demonstrations and much more. While it is difficult to create a spa atmosphere in Grand Central, famous for its high paced, high stress crowds, it showed that infusing a little spa into any environment is always a good thing. Thursday evening was one of the highlights of the four-day event, when spa industry insiders were invited to a swanky awards ceremony where The Luxury Collection’s Blue Palace Resort and Spa was recognized as "The Best of Greece" and Bliss 49 received recognition as one of the best urban hotel spas. Winners were selected by readers of the magazine, so you know they must be good!

Eating Well in Athens

Monday October 29, 2007

The birthplace of democracy, Athens is one of the world's most culturally significant cities. And, far from spartan, it has developed a taste for the finer things in life as well as simple pleasures. While the restaurants at the Hotel Grande Bretagne are top-notch (I recommend watching at least one sunset from the Roof Garden; shown here in the video), there are pleasures to be found elsewhere in the city as well.

You'll no doubt be exploring the Acropolis and other historic ruins while you're in town; on your way out of Constitution Square, stop at Ariston (10 Voulis St., two blocks from the square) and pack some spanakopita or other filled phylo pies — they have the best selection in Athens — for lunch; it'll be cheaper than around the ruins. After a day exploring the ancients, ease back into civilization with dinner at Abreuvoir, Athens' oldest French restaurant. Enjoy classic dishes such as duck à l'orange or Chateaubriand under a canopy of mulberry trees in the garden.

Not all is old-fashioned and ancient is Athens, however. Restaurants such as 48 and Hytra are taking traditional dishes and ingredients to haute new heights. 48 takes cues from El Bulli's Ferrand Adria, transforming classic dishes like Greek salad and spanakopita into molecular-gastronomic delights, while Hytra offers updated, nouveau versions of dishes from Chef Yiannis Baxevanis' home of Crete. Meanwhile, Michelin-starred Varoulko wows diners with stellar seafood, innovative interpretations of working-class dishes and a stunning view of the Acropolis. Book in advance.
