Paradise is a picnic on your own private island. Sounds like a dream, right? In Bora Bora, this type of afternoon activity isn't unusual, in fact, there are dozens of local companies who make it their specialty. All three Starwood resorts, Bora Bora Nui Resort and Spa, Le Meridien Bora Bora, and The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort will gladly reserve an afternoon on a private palm fringed plot just for you.

In this part of the Pacific, these tiny private islands are called motus, and the waters around Bora Bora are covered with them. Sounds like the perfect setting to act out those Blue Lagoon fantasies, but instead of having to scavenge for your sustenance, you get white tablecloth service. While you and your sugar pie take a swim in the warm waters of the lagoon, comb the white sand shore for seashells, explore the island's interior, or simply relax in the Polynesian sun, your guide sets up a table, chairs, umbrella, and prepares your meal of fresh, local foods. You can dine on the soft sand, or in the clear, blue waters. Both options come with a ukulele serenade and crowns of hibiscus.

Hanging out on the best beach on one of the most world's most beautiful islands can work up an appetite. But Tahiti is not a cheap place to eat — all non-local ingredients are flown in at great expense, and the cost is passed on to you. So save your money for a couple special meals, such as at the phenomenal Auberge du Pacifique, hilltop romantic Belvedere Restaurant or Le Méridien's Le Carré and check out these inexpensive chow options:

• Plan ahead and bring along a few breakfast bars and other snacks.

• Right next to Le Méridien Tahiti is the Le Cignalon/ Pacific Burger, which serves pizza, burgers and fresh seafood snacks.

• Near the docks in Papeete you'll find Les Roulottes, food carts and trucks serving up freshly made poisson cru, crèpes and other tasty meals. You can easily eat like royalty for just a few dollars. Fun, too!

Maraa Grotto 200.jpgFrench Polynesia is all about the South Pacific sunshine and endless blue skies, but sometimes the most sublime experiences happen in the shadows. So for those travelers who are interested in exploring the darker side of Tahiti, I humbly submit the Grotto Caves of Maraa. Carved into the southwest corner of the island by the relentless flow of water, this magical natural formation provides a refreshing counterpoint to the (admittedly awesome) beach scene. Bring your bathing suit for a dip in the shimmering lagoon and swim into a dark, romantic cave that appears rather small at first, but soon reveals itself to be deceptively long. There's no need to worry: the water is shallow and placid, and swimmers are constantly caressed by a steady mist of spring water filtering through a beautiful canopy of ferns lining the cavern ceiling. After your swim, be sure to take a stroll through the garden by the cave entrance, where hundreds of native flowers, bushes, and green-leafed taro plants provide a gentle welcome back to the above-ground world. The front desk staff at Le Méridien Tahiti will be delighted to arrange a visit to this verdant paradise on an island full of surprises.

Goin' to Bora Bora

Friday September 29, 2006

borabora.jpgThe New York Times rarely needs an opportunity to send a writer on an expense account trip to a glamorous tropical destination. This time around it is Bora Bora, where the new St. Regis Resort, Bora Bora got its share of rave reviews in an article focusing on new resort development on the island:

The splashiest, so far, is the St. Regis Resort, Bora Bora (689-60-78-88, www.stregis.com/borabora), which opened in June on 44 acres along the edge of a lagoon. It features 100 villas; a spa situated on its own islet; the first sushi restaurant on the island, Sushi Take, which will open in the fall; and another restaurant, Lagoon, by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. Besides amenities like plasma televisions and fancy toiletries, there are Polynesian-style perks like reef fishing and outrigger canoeing. The smallest of the rooms is 1,550 square feet and starts at $950.

Starwood Webcam-O-Rama

Wednesday August 30, 2006

HawaiiWay back in June we posted about the voyeuristic pleasures of Starwood's Hawaii Live webcams that stream live footage of beachside and poolside action at Starwood's Hawaii properties. But a few months down the line, we figured that we should mention some of Starwood's other webcams while summer's still around. In that spirit, take a look at Florida's Westin Diplomat Dip Cam, British Columbia's Westin Bayshore webcam, Niagara Falls' Sheraton Fallsview rooftop cam and last, but not least, the Turtles of Le Meridien Bora Bora webcam. Live video of sea turtles at a luxury hotel on a South Pacific island? This is what the internet was made for, my friends.

borabora.jpgFor those who want to take in some celebrity spotting with their next South Pacific getaway, there's always the St. Regis Resort, Bora Bora. The super-posh French Polynesian resort (one-, two- and three bedroom villas, three restaurants, a spa on it's own private lagoon island) was the hotel of choice for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban after their wedding. Shortly after Kidman and Urban left, Eva Longoria and Tony Parker arrived. Want to get married in the South Pacific? The St. Regis Resort, Bora Bora is offering a special wedding package.
