The Medieval Fortress of Medvedgrad

Friday August 29, 2008

Medvedgrad 200.jpgJust twenty minutes from the center of Zagreb lies one of the finest examples of medieval architecture in Europe. The Fortress of Medvedgrad dates back to the 13th century, when it was built by Zagreb's Bishop Filip, and for more than 300 years it was used to defend the western border of the Hungarian-Croation state against invasions by the Tatars and others. It was abandoned in 1590, when an earthquake nearly destroyed it, and lay in ruins for centuries until a local preservation group undertook a decades-long restoration project in the 1970's. Today, Medvedgrad is one of the most scenic spots on Mount Medvednica, an imposing 1,032-meter peak that forms a striking backdrop to Croatia's capital city. After you've seen the fortress, take a few hours to explore the rest of the mountain, which has kilometers of hiking and skiing trails, a scenic cable car, and a handful of cafes where you can relax with a drink and a pastry. Starwood has three properties in Zagreb: the Sheraton Zagreb Hotel, the Westin Zagreb, and the Four Points by Sheraton Panorama Zagreb.

Zagreb Gets A Shot of Chagall

Wednesday January 16, 2008

Marc Chagall's Lady With Bird hangs at the Zagreb City Museum in Croatia. A gift from the German actress Tilla Durieux who fled to the city during World War II, the painting shimmers with a fluttery whimsy that precipitates a desire for more. Through March 16, locals and travelers to the Croatian capital can satiate that Chagall longing at the Klovicevi Dvori Gallery, where nearly 250 of the Russian born artists' works are on view. Paintings, illustrations, lithographs, collages, sculptures and textiles, including the etchings he created for La Fontaine's Fables are included in the collection, on loan from the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, and the Marc Chagall Biblical Message Museum in Nice. The gallery is easily accessible from any of the three Starwood properties in Zagreb, the Westin Zagreb, Sheraton Zagreb Hotel, and Four Points by Sheraton Panorama Zagreb.

Since the Croatian War of Independence ended thirteen years ago, the nation has established itself as an important center for international business. Though still incredibly affordable for Americans, Croatia celebrates an advantageous position in South-Eastern Europe, with a booming economy and briskly developing industries. Art and history lovers can continue their cultural romp through the 1000-year-old city by strolling the enchanting medieval streets, and dropping in on dozens of museums. Since the capital is often overlooked, with travelers opting instead for seaside cities like Dubrovnik and Split, you may have the place all to yourself.

Head to Zagreb

Wednesday December 6, 2006

croatiamap.jpg
We'd venture to guess that most Americans don't know much about Croatia, which is a shame. It's a delightful country with a nice mix of interesting history and stunning natural beauty, plus the people are incredibly relaxed, giving the whole place a welcoming feel. The largest city, Zagreb, is centrally located to the best sights in the area (the Adriatic Sea is just a few hours' drive away, as is Lake Bled in Slovenia; both have entirely different ecologies). Zagreb is hosting the women's skiing World Cup this January, which if history is any indication is sure to be a huge county-wide party. But even if you miss the World Cup, Zagreb is always a fun city with outdoor cafes, bars, and a few churches and museums to visit when you're done with the debauchery. Which is not to say it's an adult-oriented city; officials make it a point to include kid-friendly activities. Sheraton Zagreb Hotel and The Westin Zagreb are both in charming sections of the city, located near churches from the Middle Ages and town squares.
