The ARTrageous Festival in Whistler

Thursday November 1, 2007

ARTrageous%20200.jpgFor the latest and greatest in outrageous Canadian multi-media art, check out the ARTragous festival in Whistler, British Columbia. On November 8, 2007 Whistler's original art party will be held at the High Mountain Brewhouse in Whistler Village. Expect plenty of unusual art experiences, such as live demonstrations of body painting, glass blowing, dancing, circus acts, psychics, and a "portrait experiment," all done to the strains of the funk band Soulstream. The event is designed to help artists, performers, and party goers express themselves "from the inside out," and will feature four themed areas. Interactive art stations will include self-portrait painting, Dean Cote’s Tickle Trunk photo studio, Fun House Mirrors, the 2 Doors to Success, and Adorn Yourself. If you're lucky, local artist Chili Thom (pictured) will create a unique painting on the spot, drawing in the crowd with his energy and enthusiasm. The festival is held in partnership with Whistler Cornucopia 2007, Whistler's celebration of wine and food, so feel free to indulge in an order of Mark's beer wings, an alder wood-grilled rib-eye steak, or fresh lake water trout. Wash it all down with a fine wine or delicious beer that was brewed on-site and continue your enjoyable course in art appreciation. The party begins at 9:00 p.m., and guests at the Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler should purchase tickets in advance or arrive early to ensure a front-row seat to this Canadian art extravaganza.

Starwood Southwest Discounts

Wednesday August 9, 2006

wildhorse.jpgUnfortunately, August isn't the top month for travel in the Southwest due to that whole scorching temperature thing. But hot weather outside means cheap rates for Starwood hotels in Texas, Arizona, Colorado and Missouri. $149 nightly for a shot at playing the PGA course at Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort? A chance to stay at The Phoenician, a Conde Nast Gold List and AAA 5 Diamond Award winner, for $169 nightly? Or a chance to stay at Houston's St. Regis, yet another 5 Diamond winner, for $159 a night? Yup, yup and yup.

Summer in Whistler

Friday June 2, 2006

whistler.jpg
Naturally, Whistler is thought of as a winter destination, with the two world-class mountains for skiing and plenty of après-ski options. But summer is also a great time to go, when there’s still plenty of outdoor options with much smaller crowds. The Westin Resort and Spa, Whistler is smack dab in the middle of the Village, Whistler’s fun little town full of restaurants and other diversions. Believe it or not, most of the eateries are actually quite fantastic, and there’s a whole range of options from sandwich shops to steakhouses to sushi bars. Build up an appetite during the day on one of the four golf courses in the area, or, if all that fresh air has you feeling more adventurous, looks towards the mountains. Most ski lifts and gondolas remain open year round, which means there’s plenty of hiking and mountain biking to be done (and you don’t ever have to go uphill, if you don’t feel like it!). The Westin staff can help organize a guided mountain biking trip, and if said trip leaves you too sore to move, head on down to the full-service spa. Better yet, have a massage therapist come to your room.
