Tuesday October 7, 2008
For better or worse, there are two things most people associate with Vermont: maple syrup and cheese. Fortunately, both industries embrace that fact, and several tours are offered around the state.
Staying at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel & Conference Center, strike out on the Vermont Cheese Trail, which boasts 37 cheesemakers scattered across the state — the closest is Willow Hill Farm, an artisanal producer of sheepsmilk cheese. The well-known Cabot Creamery is makes cheese on a grander scale, with guided tours for just $2 (kids under 12 are free).
Maple syrup is more of an early spring thing, but there are a couple sugarhouses still active this time of year. Carman Brook Maple Farm and Nebraska Knoll Sugar Farm are good bets through October. Many of the state's apple orchards are in high gear right now, too — stop by Chapin Orchard October 25 for their annual hard cider crush.

Old Fashioned Skiing in Vermont
Wednesday February 28, 2007
Skiers at Mad River Glen in Vermont get to experience the mountain as it used to be, thanks to its historic single-chair ski lift. As this item from MSNBC.com points out, the historic ski lift has been in operation since 1948, and is just one of many ways the mountain is a favorite of ski purists who prefer the no-frills version of the sport. Thanks to the diesel-powered single-chair lift, the trails never seem crowded, and skiers are evenly spaced as they schuss down the mountain. The lift will be getting a renovation soon - the 158 wooden chairs will be sold to collectors and the diesel engine will be replaced with an electric engine - but it will remain a single-chair lift, so skiers will still be able to enjoy the quiet 12-minute ride to the top of 3,637-foot General Stark Mountain. Mad River Glen bans snowboarding in favor of classic downhill skiing, so it's perfect for those who long for the halcyon days when the sport was young. At the time it was built, when awkward uphill rope tows were the norm in the ski world, the lift was revolutionary. The mountain is only an hour away from the Sheraton Burlington Hotel & Conference Center.
