Beyond Imaginings.jpgToronto's Harbourfront Centre cultural facility is celebrating Ontario's Greenbelt - the largest of its kind in the world - with perspectives on it by eight different Canadian artists. Beyond Imaginings: Eight Artists Encounter Ontario's Greenbelt presents 72 large-scale photographs that document the exploration and enjoyment of this amazing space. Each artist assessed one of three aspects of the Greenbelt's 1.8 million acres, Working the Land, Natural Beauty, and the People of the Greenbelt, and the results are enlightening, enchanting, and beautiful. Becky Comber's photos of the park's forests (pictured), for example, have a vibrancy and depth that make them seem almost three-dimensional. Keesic Douglas, meanwhile, provides perspectives from the water, the bow of his boat visible in every shot. And Meera Margaret Singh captures the essence of the people along the trail, portraying faces both rugged and kind, mirroring the landscape itself. Starwood has hotels throughout the Toronto area, including the Westin Harbour Castle, Toronto.

One of the 10 winners of two Free Weekend Nights was John (pictured), who was able to visit the hotel's lobby and ask for his "Free Weekends Passports Photo" in order to claim the prize.

Located in the city's vibrant business and entertainment district, the Sheraton Centre Toronto is just minutes from Toronto's greatest attractions including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Hockey Hall of Fame and the CN Tower, one of the clues from yesterday. There's plenty to see in the hotel itself, from its 2.5 acre waterfall garden in the lobby to the Senses Spa & Massage Clinic to the city's largest year-round indoor/outdoor pool.

The good news is that the hunt has just begun! There are 9 more days of the game, so there's plenty of time to win two Free Weekend Night Awards. To play, either "like" Starwood Preferred Guest on Facebook, or follow @spginsider on Twitter to receive a series of clues that point you toward the mystery property of the day. GiggleShorts2009.jpgTraditional film festivals are fine and good, but if you're only in a city for a few days, they can seem like a big time investment. A two-hour film here and a three-hour film there and pretty soon your day is gone. That's why Toronto's Giggleshorts International Comedy Short Film Festival is so great. Focusing only on short comedy films, you can breeze in and out of a variety of screenings, laugh until your sides are splitting, and then go sightseeing with the time you have left over. This year's festival (November 26-29, 2009) features more than 200 comedy short films, commercials, trailers, spoofs, mockumentaries, and "bizarre projects" that defy description by directors from Canada and around the world. Previous festivals have hosted such classics as "The Breakup Film" by award-winning filmmaker Bobby Miller, an oddball take on love and loss, and Donald D'Haene's "Viva Los Donald," about the newest member of a gambler's anonymous group. They're all hilarious, but even if you don't agree, there's not one film longer than 15 minutes, so you won't feel like you've wasted your precious vacation time. Click here for the schedule, or to watch selected shorts. Starwood has hotels throughout Toronto, including the Westin Prince, Toronto.

Dead Sea Scrolls.jpegOne of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century is on display at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Dead Sea Scrolls: Words that Changed the World (open through January 2010) offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to gaze upon a collection of hand-written documents that form the underpinnings for Judaism itself. The scrolls were found between 1947 and 1956 by Bedouin goat-herders in a series of caves off the coast of the Dead Sea, and they represent 900 separate documents that were written between 200 B.C.E. and 68 C.E. Among the documents on display at the ROM are pages of the oldest known version of the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament), whose discovery ignited a flurry of scholarship by theologians that continues to this day. Elsewhere in the exhibit is the intriguing story of how the scrolls were found, and the extraordinary measures taken to preserve these priceless, 2000-year-old religious texts. However long you spend studying the scrolls, save a few hours to explore the rest of the museum, whose collections showcase everything from dinosaurs to East Asian art. It's a fantastic museum, and it's convenient to several Starwood hotels, including the luxurious Le Méridien King Edward.

I'm definitely a city person, but I love to get away to nature whenever I can, which is why Toronto Island Park is so perfect. Located on a chain of islands in Lake Ontario, the park is just minutes from downtown Toronto by ferry, yet it's a world away from the hustle and bustle. For starters, cars aren't allowed on the islands, which instantly makes them quieter and more serene. In fact, it's the largest urban car-free community in North America. Visitors will find plenty to do in a day in this watery paradise. Families will enjoy a visit to Centreville Amusement Park, a turn-of-the-century-themed park with an old fashioned railroad and a working farm. Swimmers can get wet in any of several pools, or even splash around in the lake at one of five beaches. (Dip a toe in the water first, though as it might be chilly.) My personal preference would be to rent a canoe or kayak and explore the islands from water level, an experience that affords breathtaking views of the lake and the soaring towers of the city. Canoes and kayaks can be rented from the City of Toronto Boathouse at Centre Island. Call 416-397-BOAT to reserve your watercraft for a day of leisurely fun. The best part? When the sun goes down, you can get cleaned up and then hit the city for a scrumptious meal and an evening of dancing. After all, balance is important in life. Starwood has seven hotels in Toronto, including Le Méridien King Edward.

Caribana Toronto.jpgThe Caribbean diaspora has settled all over the world, with communities everywhere from Miami to London bringing the unique customs of the islands to their new homes. Toronto has one of the most dynamic and vibrant Caribbean communities in North America, and every summer its annual Caribana festival celebrates the art, culture, and cuisine of the islands in an explosion of sound, color, and flavor. One of the largest festivals of its kind in the world, Caribana draws more than 1.3 million visitors for two weeks every July and August for music, dancing, and cultural displays from across the Caribbean. If it's a part of Caribbean life, you'll find it at Caribana, with everything from steel drummers from Trinidad and Tobago to Bahamian calypso stars to jerk chicken stands serving up that succulent Jamaican specialty. The highlight of the festival is the Caribana Parade, which brings a carnival atmosphere to this lively Canadian metropolis. With hundreds of strikingly attired dancers marching on Lake Shore Boulevard, it's like a northern version of Carnaval. Come get that irie feeling on the shores of Lake Ontario. Starwood has 15 hotels in and around Toronto, including the Four Points by Sheraton Toronto Lakeshore, just minutes from the action.

Canada has been a hotbed of aviation for 100 years, producing some of the world's greatest airplanes and generations of skilled pilots who flew them under the challenging conditions of this breezy northern nation. There are aviation museums scattered throughout the country, but one of the finest can be found in Toronto's beautiful Downsview Park. The Toronto Aerospace Museum is filled with exhibits dedicated to a century of flight, from the earliest trainers and sport aircraft to the sleek fighters that marked Canada's entrance into the supersonic world of the jet era. Among the most striking is a Stinson Reliant V-77, a high-wing 1943 classic known as a strong bush aircraft, switching effortlessly between wheels, skis, and pontoons as conditions warranted. The museum building itself is a piece of history, as it is the original 1929 home of de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd., one of Canada's most successful aircraft manufacturers. So no matter where you lay your eyes, you'll be witnessing a Canadian aviation tradition as it charges into a new era. What's your favorite aircraft? Starwood has properties throughout the Toronto area, such as the Westin Prince, Toronto, a short drive from the museum.
