Israel has become a popular vacation destination for Americans, especially in Tel Aviv, where the beach is beautiful (and directly outside the Sheraton Moriah Tel Aviv) and the tensions of the region are less of a concern. The economy is strong, and the streets are filled with boutiques and fine restaurants, cafes and nightclubs. Even star French chef Joël Robuchon plans to open a restaurant there soon.
For starters, check out Coffee Bar, one of the city's most beloved bistros (contrary to its name, it's not a coffee bar). Its mix of American, European and local dishes will help ease you into this multicultural city, while Mike's Place delivers a little home away from home if you need it. For a non-meaty option, Buddha Burgers (site in Hebrew, unfortunately) is a good bet, offering not just veggie burgers but also burritos, sandwiches, salads, soups and more in two locations.
On the other end of the spectrum, there's Mul Yam, a rather exclusive restaurant specializing in seafood (its name means "facing the sea"). Make sure to make a reservation in advance.
