For Americans traveling to the United Kingdom or continental Europe, it's a sad fact that the American dollar doesn't go as far as it used to. Actually, lets be frankthe exchange rate sucks. But the oddities of international finance mean that there are still some countries where the American dollar still has purchasing power. In his syndicated column, travel guru Arthur Frommer points out that the exchange rate for the American dollar to the Chinese Yuan makes travel to China cheap:
The exchange rate of eight Chinese yuan to one U.S. dollar is so unrealisticand so greatly undervalues the Chinese currencythat travel to China has become an almost unbelievable bargain.
China Boom Means New Hotels

Leading the way on the rush to capitalize on the nation's burgeoning economy, Starwood announced, earlier this month, a deal to create their 20th new hotel in China. The 350-room Sheraton Zhongshan Hotel is scheduled to open its doors in January 2009, joining its other new siblings already under construction -- not to mention several Starwood hotels already operating across China, like the Sheraton Suzhou Hotel & Towers pictured at right. In the past two years, Starwood has opened four new hotels in China and inked agreements to open new properties in 11 different cities. The hotel-building boom isn't likely to end anytime soon, especially with the Beijing Olympics just around the corner in 2008.
