Roaming_Gnome.jpgLucy Williams is an Orlando-based writer for Starwood Vacation Ownership and thelobby.com's expert on the subject.

The Travelocity Roaming Gnome is on another adventure, and this time he has been seen at several different Starwood Vacation Ownership resorts. When you stay at one of these resorts in 2008, you can go on a Roaming Gnome scavenger hunt for a chance to win prizes. Roaming Gnomes will be hidden in secret spots around the resorts. Participants will receive a clue sheet with hints as to where they are hiding. Once you complete your clue sheet, you can redeem it for a prize at the resort. You will also be entered into a grand prize drawing to win a five-day, four-night resort stay, plus two airline tickets worth up to $750 each. The contest began on May 1 and will continue through the end of 2008. The grand prize winner will be chosen at the end of the year.

Participating Starwood Vacation Ownership resorts are: Sheraton Vistana Villages and Sheraton Vistana Resort in Orlando, Florida; The Westin St. John Resort & Villas in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands; The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas in Maui, Hawai'i; The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas in Kaua'i, Hawai'i; The Westin Mission Hills Resort & Villas in Rancho Mirage, California; Sheraton Desert Oasis and The Westin Kierland Villas in Scottsdale, Arizona; Sheraton Mountain Vista in Avon, Colorado; Sheraton Broadway Plantation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Sheraton PGA Vacation Resort in Port St. Lucie, Florida; and Vistana's Beach Club in Jensen Beach, Florida.

When you need a break from the sun, surf, and golf of Myrtle Beach, stimulate your creative mind with a visit to nearby Brookgreen Gardens. This beautiful 10,000-acre green space houses the country's foremost collection of outdoor figurative sculpture, with 1,200 pieces by some of the most renowned American artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. The park was the brainchild of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, who opened it in 1931, creating the first large-scale public outdoor sculpture garden in the country. Since then, generations of art aficionados and casual fans have been inspired by the dramatic artwork in a serene natural setting of native South Carolina flora and fauna. In addition to the artwork, the park also boasts a zoo that features native animals frolicking in the waterfowl aviary, otter pond, fox glade, turkey forest, white-tailed deer savannah, alligator swamp, and more. Remember not to feed the alligators, because they don't appreciate where the food ends and your arm begins. Starwood has two properties in Myrtle Beach: the Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center Hotel and the Sheraton Broadway Plantation.

Growing up on the coast of Southern New England with an aversion to seafood made me an oddity among my clam boil crazed family. But there was one little guy who occasionally turned up at these fishy fiestas, that I could actually stomach with glee: the crab.

Each spring, blue crabs along the Eastern Seaboard shed their shells. The process, called molting, allows the sideways scurrying creature to grow larger. In this unprotected state, it becomes known as a soft shell crab, a delicacy often described as "sweet," "tender," and "succulent." As the catch begins to come in along the coast, festivals spring up in celebration of the exoskeleton-less crustacean, and one of the season's first takes place in the little South Carolina village of Port Royal, just across from The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa. On April 15, the locals set up their folding chairs along Paris Avenue, for the Port Royal Soft Shell Crab Fest, as area bands like the Lowcountry Shag Club and The Showmen entertain, and restaurants from around town dish out shrimp, crab cakes, and naturally, the stars of the day, scrumptious soft shell crabs.
