On a recent stroll through the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, I was struck by a photograph of two men napping on the paint-spattered floor beneath a collection of Van Gogh paintings. These men, it turns out, are two of over 5,000 local artists employed by the Da Fen Oil Painting Village in Shenzhen, China, who mass produce original paintings and reproductions of famous artworks.

The complex, which is about a 20 minute taxi ride from the brand new Westin Shenzhen Nanshan, includes over 600 galleries. Rife with the scent of drying canvases, this miniature city overflows with a staggering amount of paintings. They hang from the walls and lie in neat stacks of colorful landscapes and impressively rendered still lifes, luring the visitor through a series of open air corridors and storefronts. In one studio, an artist paints the finishing touches on a bouquet of yellow sunflowers, while in a framing shop downstairs, a dozen Mona Lisas await their faux gilt frames. A unique cultural wonder that combines the essence of fine art with the reality of thousands of China's art school graduates trying to make a living, Da Fen Oil Painting Village is an intriguing place to visit, not only for those looking to expand their knock-off art collection, but for those interested in observing one of China's most fascinating enclaves.

Have you ever visited Da Fen Oil Painting Village? What did you see?

The Four Points by Sheraton Shenzhen is well-placed to enjoy all of this rapidly growing city's offerings - and for trips down to Hong Kong, where even more wonders await. But that's another post. Let's talk about some of the foods that are best right there in Shenzhen.

Since this is coastal country, seafood figures prominently in local cuisine. Abalone from Na'Nao Bay, Xixiang shrimp and Shajing oysters are key ingredients to look for, and the aptly named Seafood Street food district is a good place to find it. Look for the stalls with the longest lines (a sign of quality) and pick what looks best.

Roast goose is a popular non-seafood option in the region: slow roasted, with crispy skin and juicy, well-spiced meat. Some of the best can be had at Fat Girl's Roast Meat Restaurant.

One important tip: Shenzhen's water's purity can be unreliable, so be sure to pick up bottled water at the hotel or a store. And keep your eye out for Kingway Beer, brewed right there in the city and known as China's green beer" for its lack of chemicals such as formaldahyde.

Have you seen the Taj Mahal, Sydney Opera House, Eiffel Tower, or the Acropolis? How about Stonehenge, Mount Fuji, Mount Rushmore, or the Leaning Tower of Pisa? Luckily, there's no need to stamp pages and pages of that passport, burning up cash while globetrotting thousands of miles to see it all. You can view these and many more of some of the most iconic structures in all of international architecture - well, smaller replicas of them, at least - all in one spot: Shenzhen's Window of the World. From Europe and Africa to Asia and the Americas, this very ambitious and very kitschy amusement/historical park takes visual influence from a smart list of transcontinental sources. The strange resulting mish-mash is recommended to those with a hearty sense of humor.

Window of the World not only defies international boundaries, but also seasons. No matter what month it is, you can even enjoy its stunning recreation of the Swiss Alps, which offers indoor skiing and snow tubing adventures. Just take subway Line 1 to Shijiezhichuang Station for direct access to Window of the World. It's an easy journey from your stay at Sheraton Shenzhen Futian Hotel. Have you ever enjoyed such synthetic pleasures in other cities, where you can ski in summertime and feel transported around the globe in just one day?

Shenzhen Museum.gifIn a mere 30 years, the city of Shenzhen, China has grown from a small fishing village to one of China's biggest cities. To help make sense of its rapid ascent, drop by the Shenzhen Museum, where a series of exhibits guide visitors through its origin during the Ming Dynasty to its current position as an economic superpower. The museum houses over 20,000 cultural relics that are divided over four permanent exhibitions. Start with the Exhibition of Ancient Shenzhen, which sketches the contours of history from the Neolithic Age to the Qing Dynasty. Then move on to the Exhibition of Modern Shenzhen, which depicts such events as the opening skirmishes of the Opium Wars and the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. A section dedicated to Shenzhen's Reform and Opening-Up details the most important event of all - the designation of Shenzhen as a Special Economic Zone in the 1970's - which led to the rampant commercialism on display today. But lest you think the city has a single-minded focus, there are also several loving displays of Folk Culture, where a mixture of Cantonese and Hakka influences are expressed in art, music, song, dance, and cuisine. It's a great way to get a grasp on a city where the only constant is change. Starwood has four hotels in Shenzhen: the Sheraton Shenzhen Futian Hotel, the Four Points by Sheraton Shenzhen, the Sheraton Dameisha Resort, Shenzhen, and the brand new Westin Shenzhen Nanshan, which is now accepting reservations for arrival on or after January 1, 2010.

Recently, China's first Four Points by Sheraton hotel opened in Shenzhen, China's first Special Economic Zone, and within walking distance of the China (FuTian) - Hong Kong border crossing. While the city is the financial hub of Southern China, there is certainly plenty to keep you busy. The many golf course and sightseeing opportunities such as Happy Valley and Windows of the World will keep you occupied. Now is the perfect time of the year to visit, as April through October are the warmest months in Shenzhen.

Or, do as I did and take in a day at the SLF Spa. With over 500 treatment rooms, it is an amazing experience. If you don't speak Chinese, have the concierge visit their website and print out the available treatments, so that you can simply point when you are there! Of course, there are a few English speaking staff. Start your day on the lower level where ladies & gents are separated for the wet treatments, including the essential body scrubs, wet & dry sauna, plunge pools and Jacuzzi tubs. Then, proceed to the changing area where you are supplied with a pajama style outfit before rejoining the opposite sex again upstairs where there are, or what seems to be, foot massage chairs & therapists for as far as the eye can see. A karaoke lounge, restaurant and hairdresser are also available. My tip? Go for the body scrub followed by a Balinese massage with no oil - wonderful! Plus the whole day cost me less than $40 US!

Hit the Beach in Shenzhen

Tuesday August 12, 2008

In China, a country filled with economic success stories, the city of Shenzhen truly stands out. Just three decades ago it was little more than a sleepy fishing village. Then, in 1979, it was designated a Special Economic Zone, setting off a development boom unlike any the country had ever seen. Skyscrapers have been sprouting up like flowers ever since, each more brilliant than the last. Today, millions of people come to Shenzhen to do business, and the city buzzes with energy at all hours, but there's still one place to go when you're just looking to unwind. Dameisha Beach has been a local favorite for years, offering sun, sand, and surf to people who desperately need some rest and recreation. Beach volleyball, paragliding, windsurfing, and other beachy activities are available, but many people prefer to just relax in a lounge chair and listen to the ocean. There's no better way to de-stress. Guests at the Sheraton Dameisha Resort, Shenzhen are just steps from one of China's loveliest beach areas.
