Hot Times & Cool Sushi in Scottsdale
Tuesday July 29, 2008
Most people don't get excited about getting to the desert during the dog days of summer, but you might want to consider it. Because the W Scottsdale finally opens August 1, and with it a new branch of Sushi Roku. Its branches in California and Las Vegas get rave reviews, and as the W's main restaurant, it brings up an intriguing possibility: sushi in bed via room service.
Should you actually wish to leave your room, there's more sushi — as well as grilled to be found at Sea Saw, James Beard Award-winning chef Nobuo Fukuda's current home. Make a reservation for the "uber omakase" chef's special tasting and you'll find yourself talking with Fukuda himself about your likes and dislikes as he formulates a menu just for you. At the soon-to-open Shell Shock next door, expect delicious modernized izakaya tavern snacks like grilled chicken skewers, katsu burgers and tempura squash blossoms in a more casual space than its older sibling.

The festival celebrates its 30th anniversary this year (it claims to be the oldest food and wine fest in the country) with six days of parties, special dinners and more.
