Having a Beer in Salt Lake City

Tuesday January 12, 2010

For a long time, the only way to get an alcoholic beverage in Utah was to apply for membership and pay a fee to belong to a "private club" for the night. Fortunately, the state's unusual liquor law was repealed last year, and many glasses have since been raised in its memory.

One interesting development is the rise of the brewpub. There are a couple clustered just two blocks from the Sheraton Salt Lake City, including Red Rock Brewing Company and Squatters Pub & Brewery. The breweries have been around for 15 and 20 years, respectively, and they're both very much worth exploring. Skip what's on tap and go for bottles — Utah still limits draught to 3.2% alcohol. Red Rock's Hefeweizen gets high marks both as a drink and as an ingredient in the batter for the fish and chips. it's also a popular brunch destination.

Squatters isn't just good food and beer, it's also an environmental champion and a leader in Utah's Slow Food movement. It's a cozy pub with lots of wood beams and exposed brick — a perfect place for a beer and a bite to eat. As one Yelp reviewer put it, the menu is a bit Cheesecake Factory-esque in its meandering comprehensiveness, but trust your server to steer you to what's good.

The brisk winter weather will undoubtedly keep many people huddled inside their warm homes this January, but a few thousand fans of independent cinema know that the real heat can be found in Utah. The Sundance Film Festival will be held January 15-25, 2009, continuing a three-decade tradition that has transformed the motion picture industry and inspired generations of filmmakers. Venues in and around Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah will screen the best new dramas, comedies, and documentaries by filmmakers from the U.S. and around the world, and if history is any guide, a few lucky festival attendees will be among the first to see a film that will go on to become an all-time classic. After all, Sundance is the place where filmmakers such as Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Soderbergh, and Quentin Tarantino got their big breaks. This year's candidates include Sophie Barthes's Cold Souls, a story starring Paul Giamatti about a man looking for his own soul; Big River Man, a documentary by John Maringouin about endurance swimmer Martin Strel; and The Cove, the powerful tale of the challenges faced by dolphins in the world's oceans. Festival attendees will schuss down the slopes of the various ski areas in the morning hours and take in screenings during the afternoons and evenings. Of course, the festival is as much about the grand parties as it is about the silver screen, but there's nothing wrong than discussing movies with friends and family while enjoying a fine meal and a glass of wine. Some might even say that's what life is all about. Guests at the Sheraton Salt Lake City Hotel will enjoy the cinematic experience of this legendary film festival.

Floating Away in the Great Salt Lake

Thursday April 24, 2008

In northern Utah, a short drive from the Sheraton City Centre Hotel, Salt Lake City, lies the Great Salt Lake, one of the most beautiful and unusual natural wonders in the country. True to its name, the lake is both very large, measuring about 1,700 square miles, and extremely salty, with a salinity of approximately 12%, making it much saltier than sea water. It's so salty, in fact, that no fish could survive in it - only a few billion brine shrimp make a home in its waters - but the lake's banks and marsh areas do provide a habitat to several species of shorebirds, including large migrating flocks of leggy Wilson's Phalaropes. As for human populations, everybody gets a kick out of floating buoyantly in the waters off Antelope Island State Park. The largest of the lake's ten islands, Antelope boasts pristine white sand beaches, several miles of hiking trails, a sailboat marina, and picture postcard views of some of the most spectacular sunsets you'll find in the West. Perhaps most important, though, are the freshwater showers, since a dip in these briney waters tends to make swimmers smell like pickles. The island's namesake antelopes were restored in 1993, and can now be seen among deer, bobcats, coyotes, and a 600-strong herd of American bison. The annual bison roundup each November draws hundreds of cowboys and visitors who come to witness a wild and wooly spectacle in Utah's most famous natural setting.
