Dishroom Drama in Montreal

Monday October 1, 2007

Yes, dinner theater is usually not very good at either — the food is bland and the play (usually comedy) is warmed-over, or vice versa. The Dishwashers is nothing like that. For one thing, dinner comes after the play.

Performed by the SideMart Theatrical Grocery, The Dishwashers centers on a group of, yes, dishwashers working the sinks and washing machines in the basement of a fancy restaurant. The genius of this production lies in part in its location: the basement of Restaurant Bu, one of Montreal's best wine bars, in what's normally the employee break room. SideMart has filled its makeshift stage with working dishwashing equipment, and the performance gets wet and steamy (from the machinery, not necessarily the play). All that humidity helps create an air of tension for the intimate audience of 25, which makes heading upstairs to the cool and casual wine bar doubly relieving. After the show, there's a table in Bu set for the audience to relax and enjoy an après-theater meal talk with the performers if you like.

The Dishwashers runs only two more days, through October 3, in its unusual Sunday-through-Wednesday night run. With so few seats, tickets are at a premium — book yours soon. I recommend a glass of Châteauneuf du pape — a complex but rewarding wine to match the performance — before returning to your room at Le Meridian Versailles.

Magical Quebec City

Wednesday April 25, 2007

Quebec.jpgQuebec City is an ideal spot for a long weekend, with everything a traveler could want. From its breathtaking location overlooking the St. Lawrence River to its charming cobblestoned old town and miles of scenic parkland that surround it, Quebec is one of the most delightful destinations on the east coast. An interesting article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch discusses some of this historic city's most attractive features. La Citadelle of Québec is an 18th century fort known as the Gibraltar of America, where visitors can witness the daily changing of the guard, which includes Batisse the goat. The shop and restaurant-filled old town is divided between the upper town (Haute-Ville) and lower town (Basse-Ville), which are connected by the 210-foot Funiculaire Du Vieux Quebec. The Four Points by Sheraton Québec (pictured) is a luxurious resort within a city, with fine dining at Le Griffé restaurant, a heated pool, and an 18-hole golf course that will open this summer.

Sugar Shack Season in Quebec

Monday March 12, 2007

Sugar%20Shack.jpgIt's sugar shack season once again in the Northeast, and Quebec-area maple syrup and maple sugar producers are welcoming visitors to experience the first crop harvest of the year. An interesting item in the Washington Post explains that while the annual harvest of sap from maple trees is most commonly associated with Vermont, there are dozens of maple farms and sugar shacks in Maine, New York, New Hampshire, and the Quebec area that open their doors to people curious to see this age-old process of tapping maple trees and boiling down maple sugar. Around this time of year, visitors to La Cabane a Pierre, located about 40 minutes from Quebec City, for example, get to witness the creation of delicious products such as maple candies, maple liqueurs, and the ubiquitous maple syrup. The maple sugar industry has been rooted in the area since the mid-1800's, and visiting sugar shacks during the late winter and early spring has been a tradition for almost as long. Places like La Cabane à Pierre function as living pieces of French Canadian history, charming visitors with traditional music (complete with country fiddlers and washboard players), rustic cabins, and French-influenced food that goes well beyond pancakes. Guests at the Four Points by Sheraton Québec are a short drive from a sweet taste of history.

Napportunity Month at Four Points

Monday April 10, 2006

napportunity.jpgThough you've probably caught up with daylight savings time by now, it's entirely possible you missed out on National Napping Day (Monday, April 3). However, there's still plenty of time to pack in some quality napping. All of April is "Napportnity" month at participating Four Points by Sheraton hotels. If you're looking for a little extra R&R in the nap-o-sphere, the Napportunity package gets you a special weekend rate, free breakfast, 4 p.m. checkout, and a NapSack. That sack holds a sleep mask, sleep balm, a helpful tome entitled The Art of Napping, a "Nap in Progress" doorhanger, and of course, a teddy bear. You also get a pad full of prepared nap excuses in order to fend off would-be nap-nappers. As it says in the Seven Habits of Highly Effective Nappers, "Begin to plan your next nap as you awaken from this nap."
