Daffodil Days in Rhode Island

Friday April 25, 2008

blithewold1_lg.jpgEach April, daffodils bloomed like crazy on my college campus. My girlfriends and I would sneak over to the fringe of the woodlands and pick then en masse, filling our dorm rooms with the cheerful blooms. Those were recklessly gleeful times. These days we enjoy our spring blossoms with a bit more refinement. Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum, perched on a vast lawn overlooking Narragansett Bay, in Bristol, Rhode Island holds its annual "Daffodil Days" April 12 - May 4. The event includes self-guided tours of the springtime gardens, an exhibition of nature paintings by local artists, and a multitude of floral arrangements throughout the house.

A half hour drive from The Westin Providence, through the historic towns of Barrington and Warren, Blithewold Mansion makes a lovely excursion, not only for the springtime gardens, but for the magnificent mansion. Designed after a manor house in Dorset, England, Blithewold is filled with original furniture dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, souvenirs from the McKee family's travels, and over 30 sets of china. With original wallpaper, and letters and diaries documenting important local and world events, the mansion is literally a treasure trove of history. Those wishing to continue their amble through the region's illustrious past can follow the Newport Bristol Heritage Passage, a fascinating trail that leads you over the Mount Hope Bridge to Aquidneck Island where you'll discover Revolutionary War sites, quaint colonial farms, and opulent mansions of the "Gilded Age."

CapitolTour.jpgPhotographer Ramak Fazel made an art project out of a cross-country road trip. Starting in his hometown, Fort Wayne Indiana, he drove a big white van to 49 of the nation's capitol cities. The journey lasted 78 days, and covered 17,345 miles. Along the way he photographed each state's capitol building, and the people he encountered, capturing a snapshot of American life. The project was inspired by his stamp collection as Fazel's mom had been nagging him about the numerous sheets collecting dust in her basement. Anyway, the images on the stamps got Fazel thinking about different US cities, so what he did was, he mailed himself a postcard from one capitol city, to the next capitol city's post office, using the stamps he had stockpiled since childhood. If you're in New York, you can check out the fruits of Fazel's expedition in an exhibition at the Storefront for Art and Architecture, which runs through March 8.

While Fazel spent his slumbering hours in the confines of his cozy van, if you or I went on a similar expedition, we know where we'd be catching our z's now don't we? I'd start in my home state of Rhode Island, and kick off my journey in style at The Westin Providence. From there I'd hightail it south to the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel, then head west, stopping in at the Sheraton Austin Hotel before making my way to the Sheraton Grand Sacramento Hotel. From there I'd catch a flight to Honolulu where I'd finish up in style at the W Honolulu - Diamond Head, never forgetting to send postcards along the way.

Three Hot Gifts for Today's Intrepid Traveler

Wednesday December 26, 2007

There's one person on your list who above all else, loves to travel. This fearless friend prefers the driver's seat. He embarks on adventures some of us thought happened only in the movies, more James Bond or Indiana Jones, than say, Rick Steves. Here are three perfect gifts for the intrepid traveler on your list.

1. The Solio Hybrid Charger. Just set this baby out in the sun and bam! It's chock full of energy. Power any one of your handheld devices. Ask your pal about the time his iPod died on his hike through the Andes. Buy it at any of the Flight 001, in eight cities, including Los Angeles, where it is a short jaunt from the W Los Angeles - Westwood.

2. Discovery Weathertech FX5500. Some people just can't get enough of humidity levels, dew points, heat indexes, and of course temperature, my personal favorite. Essential for ski trips to the Himalayas, or surfing the Pipeline. Pressure changes make winds. Winds make waves. Get 'em only at the Discovery Channel Store online.

3. Swiss Tech BodyGard 7-In-1 Platinum Series Emergency Tool. Ever get trapped in a car? Bet your intrepid traveler buddy has. This glow-in-the-dark gadget includes a spring-loaded glass breaker, seat-belt cutter, and a distress alarm that's almost too loud. Perfect for when you're in the middle of nowhere and could really use a hand. Available at Sharper Image stores across the country, like the one in the Providence Place Mall, just down the street from the Westin Providence.

Bet that friend of yours is actually a double agent.

Smile and Say Honky Tonk

Friday August 17, 2007

honkytonkdollyparton.jpgJerry Lee Lewis lights a cigar. Dolly Parton smiles sweetly. Lester Flatt poses proudly. Moments captured by photographer Henry Horenstein's lens in the early 1970s tell the tale of a country-music life. It was a very special time in America, when local clubs and dance halls resounded with the sounds of the fiddle, the banjo, and a die-hard spirit that took many a country singer to the Grand Ole Opry, and turned cole miner's daughters into superstars. " Honky Tonk: Portraits of Country Music 1972-1981" documents the fans and the artists, both on stage and backstage, but always with an instrument in hand, or a smile on the face.

Horenstein's exhibit is on view at the East Tennessee Historical Society, in Knoxville, through September 16, and at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, in Providence, through October 7. A RISD alumni who currently teaches photography there, Horenstein has published over 30 books. Released in 2003 with over 100 images, his book "Honky Tonk: Portraits of Country Music 1972-1981" is an excellent companion to the exhibit. If you're as passionate about Bill Monroe and Waylon Jennings as Horenstein is, you won't want to miss his show.

Y'all heading to Tennessee should book a stay at the Four Points by Sheraton Knoxville Cumberland House Hotel located in the Fort Sanders Historic District. And those venturing north, will find Heavenly Beds at the Westin Providence right downtown and connected to the Rhode Island Convention Center, and the Providence Place Mall.

Starpick the Westin Providence

Friday August 10, 2007

Westin%20Providence%20200.jpgProvidence, Rhode Island is an excellent summertime destination, with plenty of cafes boasting outdoor seating, a lively theater scene, and a Saturday night spectacle known as WaterFire, which we've mentioned here before. This weekend would be a fine time for a visit, because the Westin Providence (pictured) is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, offering last-minute rates of at least 20% off regular rates. If you arrive during the afternoon, you can start with a pre-dinner brew at Trinity Brewhouse, followed by a succulent meal at Al Forno, one of the finest Italian restaurants in the country, or historic Camille's on Federal Hill, which dates back to 1914. For late-night revelry, the dancing machines and party animals pack Ultra, the Nightclub, while fans of live music head to Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel to see artists such as Bloc Party, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, and Queens of the Stone Age perform on the small stage. Wherever you go, you know you'll end up at Providence's finest hotel, with an iconic tower that forms the most prominent feature of the city's skyline.

WaterFire.jpgAn amazing and unique festival of fire and water is now underway in Providence, Rhode island. The Baltimore Sun reminds us that WaterFire Providence is now lighting up the city with 100 burning braziers floating in the Moshassuck, Woonasquatucket and Providence rivers that snake through the city like the canals of Venice. And that's not the only similarity. The waters are plied by two black Venetian-style gondolas manned by uniformed gondoliers. In addition to the large-scale sculpture, WaterFire includes a variety of cultural offerings, from the uplifting strains of classical music echoing throughout the area to free ballroom dancing in the Sovereign Plaza Ballroom. The Verizon Jazz Stage at WaterFire has a few great shows lined up as well, including the legendary David Maxwell on June 23, Kelly Lennon on July 14, and jazz saxaphonist Greg Abate on August 18. Guests at the luxurious Westin Providence, itself an icon of this great city, will enjoy this delightful summer festival.
