lux489ex.6925.jpgPeter Turco is a writer, editor, and lately an aspiring drummer when he's not working on the marketing team at Starwood Hotels & Resorts. This month, he writes about his first trip to Asia, where he recently traveled to Singapore, Phuket and Bangkok.

Sawadeekaap! If Singapore is for beginners, then Phuket is Asia for the Pampered and Spoiled. Butlers and porters and drink shufflers and coffee fairies take care of every little thing, just like they did in Singapore, but Singapore was still a business trip and it was still a city. And while there were some exciting moments -- like having fish nibble dead skin off my feet -- it wasn't a vacation.

So we took off for Phuket. The hotel sent a car to pick us up and speed us to the silty sands of Laguna Beach where we checked in at the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket. We were greeted with a wristband of fresh flowers, a delicious welcome fruit drink, and, thankfully, two small towels to wipe the sweat soaking our collars mere seconds out of the air-conditioned back seat (sissies). If I haven't mentioned the oppressive humidity, I'll note it now... it's seriously humid.

Island Dining In Phuket

Friday September 5, 2008

phuketgekkobar.jpgThe food at the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket is incredible — even the locals think so. But there's so much to explore elsewhere on the island, it'd be a shame to only mention Chao Lay or the Tea Room. Your exploration can begin just outside the resort, at Lotus, a favorite of the expat community for its fresh Thai seafood and beachfront view.

Another standout is Tatonka. Its chef, Harold Schwarz, mixes Southwest American flavors with European and Thai influences for a "globetrotting" menu and unusual decor. With expertly mixed drinks and a spectacular view, 360° Bar lives up to its name. For a quick snack while you're off the resort, look for a hawker stall selling pa tong go, an x-shaped fried doughnut-like pastry. Cheap and tasty, they're best when fried fresh and eaten hot. Or, if you're in the mood for a taste of home, The Black Cat can set you up with a hot dog... or masaman curry.

Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket pool 200.jpgWhite sand beaches, indigo lagoons, and lush coconut groves make Phuket one of the most desirable and exclusive vacation destinations on the planet, but that doesn't mean it's out of reach. The Sheraton Grande Laguna, Phuket is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, with last-minute rates of at least 20% off regular rates for stays during the next six weeks, so it won't take much to find yourself in the midst of a Thai paradise. Phuket's FantaSea

Monday June 2, 2008

The Thai island of Phuket is the kind of destination people daydream about, with turquoise waters, sandy beaches, and gently-swaying palm trees. And for those who really want to indulge in the Phuket fantasy, there's Phuket FantaSea, a short drive from the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket (a member of Starwood's Luxury Collection). This nighttime cultural theme park might have a cheezy name, but it knows how to put on a show like no other you'll experience in Phuket. An enormous stage in the Palace of the Elephants Theater is the setting for a spectacular revue that mixes ancient Thai cultural traditions such as dances, shadow puppets, and elaborate costumes with modern stagecraft techniques, like smoke machines and lasers. Subtle it's not, especially with a cast of elephants, water buffalo, and birds counted among the actors, but it's a show that you'll likely remember for years to come. In addition to the show, Phuket FantaSea has a recreation of a typical Thai village, the Golden Kinnaree Buffet Restaurant, and the new Similan Entertainment Center, which features some pretty crazy undersea-themed arcade games. Sure, it's a bit over-the-top, but it's also the perfect complement to a day spent frolicking in the Andaman Sea.

One of my favorite countries, Thailand is now so much easier to explore right from your desktop thanks to Starwood Preferred Guest. With the introduction of Destination Thailand, plan your escape. Whether you are exploring the sacred temples of Bangkok, the crystal clear waters of Phuket or the once small fishing village of Pattaya, uncover the wonders of a country that offers more than meets the eye.

My insider tips include the pool at Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. It’s a hidden oasis and a welcome slice of luxury in a city that never stops.

Private infinity pools are but one of the luxuries at the ocean front villas at the Sheraton Pattaya Resort. With clear, unsurpassed views across the Gulf of Siam (pictured) along with separate lounge and dining areas and sundecks, you will especially enjoy the open plan bathrooms with their large terrazzo bathtubs and rainforest showers.

On October 10, poles were raised at temples around Phuket for the gods to descend. And at midnight nine lanterns hung aglow, heralding the start of the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. During the 10-day event devotees of this 182-year-old tradition will adhere to a strict vegetarian diet. But the festival is a lot more than just rice and papaya. The more extreme will bathe in hot oil, climb ladders made of blades, walk on burning coals, and pierce their bodies in myriad ways for the sake of spiritual cleansing, and good luck.

Those new to the event may prefer a more passive approach. For starters, acquainting oneself with the festival's ten basic rules is a good idea. Clean the body, get some white outfits, then check out the schedule of events. There are processions to take part in, invocations to the gods to observe, and ceremonies to beat drums at, driving away those evil spirits.

Fireworks illuminate the skies all through the festival, but they blaze most brilliantly on the last night, October 19, when the gods are sent back to the heavens in style. Plenty of vegetarian options can be enjoyed at each of the three extraordinary Starwood properties in Phuket. Try breakfast at Le Meridien Phuket Beach Resort's open-air restaurant, Pakarang; or pasta at Le Royal Meridien Phuket Yacht Club's Italian restaurant, Regatta. Of course tea is an integral ingredient in the spiritual cleansing process, and the Tea House at the Sheraton Grande Laguna Phuket, pairs fruit and vegetable juices with your Chinese meal.
