A Festival of Tamales in California

Friday November 14, 2008

It's a short drive from the Westin Mission Hills Resort and Spa to the town of Indio in the heart of Southern California's Coachella Valley, which will host its annual record-breaking Indio International Tamale Festival on December 6 and 7. Featured on the Food Network's All-American Festivals program, the Tamale Fest offers both a hearty tribute to corn masa in its infinite varities as well as a lively look at how the Mexican-American culture is still vibrantly alive in this community through music, art and dance. It has also made two appearances in the Guinness Book of World Records. It first nabbed the honor of presenting the "World's Largest Tamale" with a 40-foot long tamale in 1999, and came back the following year with a crowd of 120,000 and were certified to be the "World's Largest Tamale Festival." Launched in 1992, it is a highlight of every winter season in this area. But don't be fooled into thinking this is some sort of prelude to a White Christmas; it's still normally an average of 79 degrees outside during this weekend, so one might easily be fooled into thinking it's actually summer.

Here both golf fanatics and beginning players may pursue their passion for golf with more than 100 courses in the surrounding area, including the nearby Desert Willow Golf Resort. matchbox palm springsThere are two sides to Palm Springs. On the one hand, it's a resort town; on the other, a laid back retirement-oriented community. The food reflects that. You've got some very chic restaurants serving very refined French and Contemporary American cuisine — and then Jewish delis and casual bistros that cater to a relaxed lifestyle.

Hip yet unpretentious Kaiser Grille is a favorite among locals and weekenders alike; try the wood oven-braised pork chops or the lime-marinated sea bass. Earlier in the day, check out Manhattan in the Desert, with "ginormous" portions and a full bakery — it's just a couple blocks from Le Parker Méridien Palm Springs. Further away is the stalwart Sherman's Deli & Bakery, helping keep PS kosher since 1953. (Our editor Carly swears by the place.) And of course if you don't feel like leaving the hotel, so immersed you are in your game of shuffleboard, there's Norma's right inside the hotel, serving breakfast on the veranda all day.

Moving toward the swankier end of things, start your evening at Matchbox. This little bistro features wood-fired pizzas and some creative apps and entrees; the wine list is substantial and reasonably priced. Contemporary, cool Copley's, nestled into Cary Grant's former estate, serves such dishes as roast leg of lamb, tandoori chicken and "Oh My Lobster Pot Pie," which is as luscious as it sounds. For the most haute, you'll want to make a reservation for Le Vallauris, a classic French restaurant with more than a few modern twists up its tuxedoed sleeve.

Big League Dreams in California

Tuesday May 15, 2007

Big%20Le.jpgMost aspiring athletes dream of playing in the big leagues, but those dreams only come true for a select few. Until now, that is. As this story in the Washington Post points out, an outfit called Big League Dreams operates a collection of replica ballparks around the country. The park near Palm Springs, California, for example, has replicas of Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, and Wrigley Field (pictured), all of which seek to evoke the spirit and history of these storied instutions. The sold-out crowds in the stands might be painted facades, but the excitement is real. Weekend warriors and serious athletes alike form teams and compete in various skill divisions, relishing the opportunity to knock the softball out of the park and round the bases like champions. After a few games, guests at Le Parker Méridien Palm Springs might enjoy a massage and spa treatment at the Palm Springs Yacht Club, followed by a healthy dinner at Mr. Parker's restaurant and cocktails at Mr. Parker Bar or the Mini Bar.
