If you just can't get enough Burt Reynolds in your life, make tracks for the Burt Reynolds & Friends Museum in Jupiter, Florida. This quirky museum, a short drive from the Resort at Singer Island, has memorabilia from all of Reynolds's big movies, from early blockbusters such as The Longest Yard, Deliverance, Starting Over, and The Cannonball Run to more recent hits like Boogie Nights and The Dukes of Hazzard. Reynolds, a former football player and big sports fan, also happens to have one of Florida's most extensive collections of sports memorabilia, where you'll find a pair of Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves, a baseball autographed by Mickey Mantle, and jerseys from Joe Montana and local hero Dan Marino. But this isn't just a monument to one man's career, it's also the home of the Florida Film and Theater Institute, a not-for-profit corporation that offers acting classes to beginning, intermediate, and experienced actors. Of course, the museum has a gift shop as well, and it's just the place to pick up a Burt Reynolds Museum T-shirt and perhaps a 14-karat gold Smokey and the Bandit charm. Come on, you know you want it.

Spring is just around the corner, but there's still time to enjoy one more great winter getaway. Since sunny weather and pristine beaches never get old, why not savor a couple of days in Palm Beach, Florida? Palm Beach is a pretty swanky area, but it won't take much green to do it right this time, thanks to Starpicks. The Resort at Singer Island (a member of Starwood's Luxury Collection) is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, with last-minute rates of at least 20% off regular rates for stays during the next six weeks. This exquisite property is located right on the beach, and its 239 all-suite resort units feature expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. Relax on the beach or, if you're not afraid of heights, give parasailing a try, and then cool off with a dip in the resort's infinity pool. After lunch, your sore muscles will appreciate a massage at the spa, which features the best of both traditional and cutting-edge spa treatments and facilities. When the sun goes down, things heat up at Solu restaurant, which features Caribbean cuisine, indoor and outdoor seating, and ocean views to take your breath away under the moonlight. End the perfect day with a cold drink at the resort's rum bar and have a toast to one more great winter. New Starpicks properties are posted every Tuesday, so check the list often for the latest deals.
Go Green at the Palm Beach WestFest
Wednesday February 27, 2008The Palm Beach WestFest started out fifteen years ago as a small community festival aimed to bolster civic pride, but it has since grown to become one of the biggest and best outdoor celebrations you'll find here all year. This year's festival, known as the WestFest Land & Sea Festival, will be held on March 1 and 2 in beautiful Okeeheelee Park, about 40 minutes from the Resort at Singer Island, and it aims to be the biggest ever, with national acts taking the stage along with local favorites and more food and amusements than you can shake a stick at. Musical artists such as Starship, Beatlemania Now (a Beatles tribute band - see video), and Montana Tucker will be joined by the energetic freestyle moves of the High Voltage Extreme Acrobatic Dance Team, BMX performer Daniel Boyer, and something called the Victory Riders and the Globe of Death, which I find interesting and a little ominous. In a nod to environmental consciousness, this year's festival is going green, making use of recycled and recyclable materials and featuring an exhibit on "What is Green" which aims to highlight green technology, including a display of the latest hybrid cars. Naturally, food vendors serving all kinds of goodies, along with beer and wine for the first time in the festival's history, will be found throughout the area, so you can reward yourself for obtaining an environmental education.
