Classic rock, meet classical music. On Saturday, March 29 at 8:00 p.m., the Las Vegas Philharmonic will perform The Music of Led Zeppelin at the Theatre for the Performing Arts at the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, a Sheraton Resort. For any other rock band, this hybrid might not work, but the complex rhythms and multi-layered riffs of Led Zeppelin's songs - as heavy as they are - seem to lend themselves fully to classical interpretation. In this case, the Philharmonic is amplified by a full rock band and accompanied by Zebra frontman Randy Jackson, whose screaming vocals can capture Led Zeppelin's "sheer blast and power" for fans of both musical styles. Creator Brent Havens wanted to take the music as close to the original songs as possible, and then ignite the performances with the richness, energy, and color that only a classical ensemble can deliver. The two-hour-plus concert will feature 18 Led Zeppelin tunes, including Heartbreaker, Black Dog, Immigrant Song, and everyone's all-time favorite, Stairway to Heaven. Purchase your tickets right here for this genre-jumping event, and consider staying an extra day or two to explore the exciting, new Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino.

The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas
Thursday December 6, 2007Strap on your spurs and dust off your cowboy hats, because the rodeo is coming to Las Vegas. The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, which will be held December 6-15, 2007, is the culmination of the ProRodeo Tour season, and some of the country's most skilled rodeo professionals will make their way to the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas to put on one of the wildest shows in the West. If you've never been to a rodeo before, this is on the one to see, with rodeo events such as team roping (pictured), bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing, and the scariest event of them all, bull riding. Personally, I can't imagine trying to stay on top of an extremely agitated 2,000-pound bull for eight long seconds, but these guys seem to have a natural talent for it, which is probably why they're in the championships. Seeing a top rider get thrown to the dirt and watching the rodeo clowns rush in to distract the bull from finishing the job is a heart-pounding experience like no other. Guests at the nearby Westin Casuarina Las Vegas Hotel, Casino & Spa or the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, A Sheraton Resort should reserve their tickets now for this unique and exciting event.
Chips and Turkey: Thanksgiving in Vegas
Thursday November 22, 2007
Hey, not everybody does Thanksgiving at home these days; Las Vegas has become a popular destination for families looking for an alternative to the standard holiday experience. And Sin City has you covered, with Turkey Day dinner options ranging from the traditional to the unconventional.
At Sheraton's brand new Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino (formerly the Aladdin Resort), the Strip House will be serving wild mushroom bisque with crisp pancetta, sage and black truffle butter; roast fresh turkey with chestnut bread stuffing, butternut squash puree, kale and collard greens and balsamic-cranberry sauce with confit giblet gravy. Finish off with pumpkin pie topped with Tahitian vanilla ice cream.
At Bally's Steakhouse, the $59 set menu starts with roasted butternut squash soup with black trumpet mushrooms and creme fraiche, followed by a spinach salad topped with crisp smoked bacon, mushrooms and warm cider vinaigrette. The main course is smoked prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes and braised root vegetables in rosemary jus. For a Southern-style meal, head to Memphis Championship Barbecue, where the options include both smoked turkey and country ham, along with all the traditional sides and fixings.
On the more unusual side, the turkey shows up two ways on the menu at Todd English's Olives: as an oven-roasted skewer with fall vegetables and stuffing, and as the filling for agnolotti pasta. Not enough ideas? Check out this exhaustive list from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Feels So Good at Red Rock
Wednesday July 25, 2007You can do anything you want in Las Vegas, but the most popular activities tend to go on indoors. The gambling, fine dining, and shows are concentrated in the air conditioned confines of the various establishments along the strip, and that's just fine. On a recent trip to Vegas, however, I made a point of venturing out into the light of day, and I'm glad I did, as a visit to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. The park is located 17 miles from Las Vegas Boulevard, but it's a world away from the lights and bells of the casino floor. True to its name, this 200,000-acre park features endless waves of striated rock that seems to turn a hundred different shades of red as the sun moves across the desert sky. Hiking and biking trails abound, with 30-miles of trails for the novice to the expert and even a few areas popular with rock climbers. There are picnic areas, a visitors' center, and museum and wildlife center that points out the flora and fauna of the park, such as the desert tortoise and the many indigenous wild burros which can be found throughout the area. As friendly as they look, they do kick and bite, so don't get any crazy ideas. During the summer months, it can be too hot to hike in the middle of the day, so take the easy alternative and cruise along the 13-mile scenic drive, basking in the beauty of this pristine southwestern landscape. It's worth it to experience a side of Vegas most visitors never see. Perhaps you'll even come across a man practicing Chuck Mangione on his trumpet. Red Rock is a short drive from the Westin Casuarina Las Vegas Hotel, Casino & Spa and the Planet Hollywood Hotel & Casino, a Sheraton Hotel.
