Watch the Fireflies Light Up the Malaysian Night
Friday August 15, 2008
Just an hour outside of Kuala Lumpur lies the most curious place. Kuala Selangor is a coastal town at the mouth of the Selangor River that's famous for its friendly people, beautiful mangrove swamps, and abundance of fireflies. That's right, for whatever reason, it's one of only a handful of spots in the world that attract thousands upon thousands of fireflies, and every night they light up the sky above the river like a tangled mass of Christmas lights. The best way to experience this amazing natural display is on the water itself, and organized tours go out at every night at dusk in boats powered by ultra-quiet electric motors to give visitors the unforgettable experience of being surrounded by tiny, light-emitting creatures. Don't worry, fireflies don't bite or sting, so you can kick back, relax, and enjoy the bug light show. Guests at Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur or any of Starwood's Kuala Lumpur properties might enjoy this otherworldly journey through the Malaysian night.

A stay at The Westin should always have you leaving the hotel feeling better than you arrived, an experience of renewal. A visit to Kuala Lumpur must involve some serious time dedicated to its many shopping malls. The newest shopping mall in KL, The Pavilion, has opened directly across the street from The Westin Kuala Lumpur and there is no better way to rest your tired feet after a day of shopping than at the Kenko Reflexology & Fish Spa. But this is no ordinary spa .. the fish will eat your feet to health! You read it right .. soak your feet in an enormous fish tank and allow your many new friends to go to work. Thousands of Garra Rufa fish, known as 'Doctor Fish' will surround your feet and give the best beauty treatment your feet can ever ask for. They hold the secret to smooth and glowing skin! The Garra Rufa's natural habitat is the water of a hot spring near Kangal, Turkey and it was there that the fish's unique healing power was first discovered decades ago.

Monkeying Around Malaysia's Batu Caves
Monday February 25, 2008One of Malaysia's most fascinating natural sites can be found just a few kilometers north of Kuala Lumpur. The Batu Caves are a series of limestone caves inside a hill that have been converted into temples for the country's Hindu population, and they represent the amazing ability of the country's early Indian settlers to adapt to a challenging natural environment. Of the three main caves, the 113-year-old temple dedicated to Lord Subramaniar is perhaps the most impressive. Located in an airy cavern about 400 meters above ground level, it features otherworldly natural lighting, numerous stalactites and stalagmites, and excellent echoes throughout the 100-meter-high chamber. While there are plenty of walkways to ease your visit, getting to the cave still requires climbing 272 steps, so be sure to wear some comfortable shoes. One more thing: watch out for the macaque monkeys, who pester visitors into giving them peanuts and bananas. So if you're squeamish around monkeys, make sure to leave the snacks in your room. Starwood has several luxurious properties in Kuala Lumpur, including Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur.

Middle East Meets South East Asia
Wednesday August 29, 2007
Inside Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur, there's a magical place, a place where Arabian nights are conjured up and the delicious food matches the sumptuous décor. The name of the place is Al Nafourah, a luxury Lebanese restaurant that has both locals and guests raving.
Chef Malcolm Goh, who has been awarded the Nestle Golden Chef Hat award from the Malaysian Chefs Association, cooks up specialties like roast lamb with cous cous, tagines and kebabs such as his signature assorted seafood kebab — swordfish, mussels, scallops, squid and prawns served with rice and vegetables. If you can't settle on one item, you might try the semi buffet, which offers a bountiful selection of menu items plus a carving station. Al Nafourah gets a lot of praise for its sumptuous space, with Moorish art and rugs, dark wood and a fountain in the waiting room. For couples and small groups, the restaurant turns up the intimacy with private "dining tents" surrounded by silk curtains. Other draws include belly dance performances and hookahs with flavored tobacco outside on the poolside terrace.
Malaysian Arts Through the Ages
Thursday August 23, 2007
One of the best ways to experience a different culture is through its performing and fine arts, which relate the history of the people and the joys and hardships they've experienced through song, dance, theater, painting, and sculpture. By this standard, visitors to Kuala Lumpur have an embarrassment of riches, because some of Malaysia's most renowned cultural landmarks can be found in this bustling Southeast Asian capital.
The striking Istana Budaya, or Palace of Culture (pictured), for example, is a must-see for any visitor, as it houses Malaysia's National Theater, with four adjustable stages, seating for nearly 1,500 people, and performances of both Malaysian and international works of classical music, opera, and musical theater. The National Museum of Malaysia, meanwhile, located by the beautiful Perdana Lake Garden, offers a rich overview of the culture of Malaysia, with exhibits of traditional arts and crafts, ancient weaponry, and currency, as well as numerous galleries of paintings and other works depicting both historical events and everyday life for the people of the Malay Peninsula.
Finally, the world-famous Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra is conveniently situated at the Petronas Twin Towers, one of Asia's most impressive skyscrapers (and that's saying something). Comprised of musicians from 22 different countries, the Philharmonic will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Saturday, September 1 with Matthias Bamert conducting the orchestra's rendition of Kumpulan Wayang Kulit Anak Seri Baju Merah Dalang Saupi bin Isa tok dalang. Now that's a mouthful. Guests at Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur, centrally located near most of the city's centers of art and culture, might want to experience for themselves the story of Malaysia as told by its best artists throughout the ages.
Air Asia X
Thursday February 15, 2007
Getting to Kuala Lumpur on a long-haul could soon become a lot cheaper. Chatter has been bubbling for days regarding a new long-haul, low cost-modeled airline. Right now, Oasis Hong Kong is the only similar operation running. But news broke last month that the airline has a name, Air Asia X, and rumors about a partnership with Virgin and easyJet have not yet been proven. Air Asia X is a joint project between Malaysia's Air Asia, and Fly Asian Express (FAX), and routes will start in July. When Air Asia X does get off the ground, the best values will probably be available to travelers between the UK and Kuala Lumpur, a long route currently served only by traditional carriers. A lot of flashy (low) numbers are being thrown around, but remember that those rock bottom prices will almost definitely be augmented by at least a couple hundred dollars in mysterious fees. Still, discounts mean that taking a trip between Europe and Malaysia will soon be a possible impulse buy for travelers on tight budgets. Provided the airline really does launch in July, aviation geeks will likely be snapping up rooms in KL soon. Many serious travelers did the same thing with Oasis Hong Kong, and flew its inaugural flight for no other reason than to be a part of history.
