The Travelocity Roaming Gnome is on another adventure, and this time he has been seen at several different Starwood Vacation Ownership resorts. When you stay at one of these resorts in 2008, you can go on a Roaming Gnome scavenger hunt for a chance to win prizes. Roaming Gnomes will be hidden in secret spots around the resorts. Participants will receive a clue sheet with hints as to where they are hiding. Once you complete your clue sheet, you can redeem it for a prize at the resort. You will also be entered into a grand prize drawing to win a five-day, four-night resort stay, plus two airline tickets worth up to $750 each. The contest began on May 1 and will continue through the end of 2008. The grand prize winner will be chosen at the end of the year.

Starwood Insider - Candice Kraughto - Weekend In Kauai
Monday April 7, 2008
Candice Kraughto, is the director of public relations for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Hawaii, and thelobby.com's expert on the region.
Long hours at work, family weekend commitments, and general fatigue were causing my husband and me to be out of sync. We were like ships passing in the night. It was worse than football season. We needed relief. Two days at the Sheraton Kauai Resort in Poipu turned out to be the best prescription for what was ailing us.
We arrived at the resort on Friday night around 9:30 pm having taken almost the last inter-island flight from Honolulu to Lihue after work. “WooHOO!” my husband yelled when he walked into the Sheraton Kauai Resort’s one-bedroom Plumeria Suite. This gorgeous, ground-floor suite opened up to a private Jacuzzi on the lanai, the crashing ocean waves and inky black sky dotted with stars. The living room, dining room, entry hall, bedroom and huge bathroom stretched over square footage double the size of our tiny apartment in Honolulu. We could feel our tension and exhaustion start to ebb away as we dropped our bags on the ground and just breathed in pure Kauai.
My husband and I wandered over to The Point, the resort’s indoor and outdoor bar and grill for a glass of wine and late night appetizers. We watched a crowd gather for “Release,” a stylish Friday night party offered every week for the local Kauai ultra lounge lovers. The Sheraton Sweet Sleeper seemed to be calling our names though so we strolled back to our suite before the “Release” party went off full swing.
Destination Spotlight - Kaua'i - Bird Watching At Kilauea Point
Wednesday February 6, 2008
Red-footed boobies, wedge-tailed shearwaters, and pacific golden plovers have two things in common: terrific names, and nesting grounds on the northernmost point of the Hawaiian Islands. Smart birds. The winged creatures have found protection on the 203-acre Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, since 1985. Situated on the dramatic shores of Kauai, the refuge makes a wonderful excursion from the Princeville Resort which lies six miles to the west.
Visitors are free to amble the sanctuary trails on their own, or join in on one of the daily tours lead by knowledgeable volunteer guides. Check out the educational exhibits in the visitor's center, then hike over to the Kilauea Lighthouse, situated within the park, and get a bird's eye view of the nests below. Depending on the time of year, you could spot a humpback whale, monk seal, or a dolphin. And don't miss Hawaii's state bird, the nene, reintroduced to the sanctuary in 1991. This endangered goose is so prized it even has its own crossing signs!
Destination Spotlight - Kaua'i - The Local Option
Wednesday February 6, 2008Although Hawaii imports 90% of its food, the Aloha State hasn't been left out of the trend toward eating locally produced foods. If you're interested in learning more about what's local in Kaua'i, start with the farmers markets. Fortunately, there's nearly one every day throughout the island. If you're staying in Koloa, close to the Sheraton Kaua'i Resort, every Monday is your farmers market, but if you're staying farther north at the Princeville Resort, the Hanalei market on Tuesdays and Saturdays is your market. Keep your eye out for goat cheeses from Kauai Kunana Dairy (thelobby.com editor Carly raves about it) organic coffee from Blair Estate, and locally grown fruits such as papayas and rambutans. For a special treat, visit Blair Estate's plantation for a tour and sample fresh roasted coffee.
There are also a number of restaurants that focus on local and sustainable food. Banana Joe's Fruitstand grows its own fruit and uses local suppliers for their delicious frozen fruit "frosty." For something a little more substantial, head to Town, an American bistro whose motto is "Local first, organic whenever possible, with Aloha always," or Bar Acuda, where the menu depends on what local fishermen were able to catch that day.
Keep in mind, as good as that locally grown papaya is, you can't take it home; the USDA does not allow local fruits or vegetables to leave the island — with the convenient exception of the prepackaged pineapples waiting for you on the other side of the security gates at the airport.
Destination Spotlight - Kaua'i - Rafting Away on the Na'Pali Coast
Wednesday February 6, 2008Disclaimer: I love Kaua'i. I just have to admit it upfront. I am entirely biased. Kaua'i is fabulous. My grandfather once told me that it was a place for honeymooners and families, so I visited the other islands first. But then, last year, my best friend suggested a short chillax vacation. Somewhere remote, somewhere warm, somewhere that wouldn't require changing planes from Los Angeles. Between us, we had visited all the other islands so thought - why not Kaua'i? It was the best choice I made all year. During our long weekend, we hiked through guava groves, swam in crystal blue waters, and feasted on some of the most delicious fish I've ever tasted. Yes, it rained about once an hour for five minutes, but this didn't deter the locals from leaving the beach, so after a day or so, we ignored it too. Frankly, sometimes it was so humid, it felt fantastic! The island's natural wonders were abundant and thinking about it now still takes my breath away. But nothing makes me quite as excited as recounting my Na'Pali Coast rafting excursion.
If you can manage to extract yourself from the spectacular beachfront and poolside setting of the Princeville Resort, for a couple of hours, and trust me, it's a challenge, be daring and take that much-discussed "raft adventure up the Na'Pali Coast." It is by far the most fun I think I have ever had on water and I am one of the last people you would ever expect to go on a rafting tour. Due to its everchanging coastline, the Na'Pali Coast can only be reached by boat but with its thousand foot cliffs and vast sea caves, it is breathtaking. Most of the rafting companies leave off the Southside, but a few depart from nearby Hanalei Bay, a ten minute drive from the hotel, each morning.

More Destination Spotlight - Kaua'i - Cruise the Wailua River
Tuesday February 5, 2008Among its many other charms, the island of Kauai boasts the only navigable river in all of the Hawaiian islands. The freshwater Wailua River runs from the slopes of Mount Waialeale (the wettest spot on earth) to the island's eastern coast, and it contains so much natural beauty over its 16-kilometer length that it's worth leaving Kauai's beautiful beaches to check out. Rent a kayak and explore the river under your own power, or hook up with an outfit called Smith's Kauai for the famous Fern Grotto Wailua River Cruise. A flat-bottom boat will take you gently up the stream through scenic Wailua River State Park to the spectacular Fern Grotto, an amazing grotto made of lava rock that's covered in lush ferns and other tropical vegetation. The shape of the grotto provides a natural amphitheater with perfect acoustics for strolling musicians who play traditional Hawaiian songs as visitors stand in thrall of the verdant beauty. As if the natural grotto isn't enough, the river also features one of Hawaii's most stunning waterfalls, Wailua Falls, which were made famous when they were featured in the opening scenes of the classic American TV show Fantasy Island. Guests at the Sheraton Kauai Resort in the town of Koloa might enjoy a trip on this unique Hawaiian waterway.
Starpick the Sheraton Kauai Resort
Friday October 12, 2007The island paradise you daydream of just got a little bit closer. The Sheraton Kauai Resort is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, which means that last-minute rates are at least 20% off regular rates for stays during the next six weeks. This exquisite 20-acre property on Kauai's sunny south shore is located alongside Poipu Beach, the #1 beach in America according to the Travel Channel and Dr. Beach. Kayak, surf, and scuba to your heart's content, but if you're able to tear yourself away from this fantastic beach for a day, be sure to check out the island's amazing interior.
A hike through gorgeous Waimea Canyon is an almost surreal experience. At ten miles by two miles and nearly 4000 feet deep, it's a lush, green contrast to the sands of Poipu. Spectacular Wailua Falls, meanwhile, might look a little bit familiar to anybody who watched TV in the late seventies and early eighties, as it was featured in the opening montage of Fantasy Island. The Sheraton Kauai features plenty of great natural vistas of its own, including the beautiful Point Lookout, which is a perfect spot for taking in the Pacific sunset, along with a beverage and snack at the Point Restaurant and Lounge. Visit Starpicks today for the latest list of last-minute destinations.
