Kansas City has always had a vibrant cultural scene, but you'd be surprised at the sheer breadth of entertainment options on display at the KC Fringe. From July 21 - 27, 2008, some of the most talented local, regional, and national artists converge on venues throughout Kansas City to perform live theater, music, dance, poetry, storytelling, fashion, and much more. On the traditional side, Alan Tilson's Shakespeare in Love and War treats the audience to fifty Shakespeare monologues and three sonnets in a feast of classic English theater. Marionettes are the stars of a unique production of Sleeping Beauty by Berezovsky's Marionette Theater, whose skilled practitioners bring the dancing dolls to life. Fans of improv will get a kick out of Holy Cow! Improv Comedy Troupe, which spins tales of barnyard life in the Bovine Comedy. And those partial to dance numbers shouldn't miss Up In Arms/It Sure Is Risky by Four World's Dance, a collective of different artists dedicated to pushing the boundaries of movement and flow, a goal to which we can all aspire. Starwood has four Kansas City hotels, including the luxurious Westin Crown Center, Kansas City.

Style and Substance in Leawood, Kansas
Thursday March 27, 2008
Kansas City is truly an American classic, with some of the country's greatest food, music, art, and history. And the nearby community of Leawood, Kansas, just south of Kansas City proper, is the perfect home base from which to experience the best of Kansas City and its environs, with everything you'll expect to find in the "heart of America," as well as a few things you won't. Gates Bar-B-Q, for example, is famous for its tantalizing hickory barbecue ribs, which have had generations of KC residents smiling and licking their sauce-coated fingers. But after a hearty meal like that, it's nice to have a walk in the great outdoors, and there are few better places for a stroll than Leawood's I-Lan Park, just a few blocks from the restaurant. I-Lan Park is named after Leawood's sister city, I-Lan, Taiwan, and its Asian-influenced landscaping and Taiwanese pagodas are a sight to behold. The 10-acre park includes a carefully manicured walking trail that's perfect for an after-lunch constitutional, and its Taiwanese garden is just the place to pause and reflect on the beauty around you. This charming Kansas town will also soon be the home to the element Leawood, which will open on September 1, 2008. element by Westin represents the latest thinking in hotels, offering everything you need to be at your best, from healthy meal options and cutting-edge workout facilities to bright and open public spaces and open-flow guest rooms featuring the Westin Heavenly Bed, spa-like bathrooms, and fully-equipped kitchens. It's a refreshing new way to take in the best of this exciting Midwestern town.

Kansas City's Kaleidoscope Children's Art Center
Monday October 22, 2007
Kids are happiest when they're given the chance to express themselves creatively, which is why the Kaleidoscope children's art center in Kansas City is such a great idea. Located in Hallmark's Crown Center (along with the Westin Crown Center, Kansas City), Kaleidoscope is an art studio that provides kids with the space, materials, and guidance they need to unleash their imaginations in a variety of media. True to its name, budding artists will find a kaleidoscope of art supplies, including melted crayons, polka dots of all sizes, shooting stars, cardboard, shiny paper, and ribbons, to name just a few. The studio itself is designed to help kids and their parents get in touch with their creative sides. One room features a tall mural of a shimmering cityscape, while another simulates an undersea world best viewed through the safety of the submarine (pictured). A third area represents the vastness of outer space, and features an illuminated, interactive "space machine." To help everyone get started, the center offers 40-minute family art sessions for children of all ages and their adults, as well as special independent art sessions for kids ages five to twelve. Kaleidoscope is completely free, and many of the materials are recycled items from the Hallmark greeting card company, which provides Kaleidoscope as a way to get kids interested in art. You might have a budding Rembrandt on your hands, so grab the little ones and check out this one-of-a-kind Kansas City family attraction.
WaterFire Kansas City
Thursday August 23, 2007As we've mentioned here before, the annual WaterFire festival in Providence, Rhode Island has been a boon to the city, attracting thousands of visitors and helping to support area businesses.
It proved so popular, in fact, that in 2005, Columbus, Ohio got into the game with WaterFire on the Mile, a similar celebration on the Scioto River. And this year, Kansas City hopes to share in the fun with its own version of WaterFire called WaterFire Kansas City. The area of Brush Creek that runs past Kansas City's Country Club Plaza will be transformed into a work of art with the addition of 85 burning braziers on the water. On Saturday, September 8 and again on Saturday, October 13, the braziers will be set ablaze at 6:00 p.m., and will be kept burning until midnight. In addition to the water-borne entertainment, spectators on land will be entertained by the Kansas City-based Vesuvius Fire Dancers, the Night of Song ensemble from the Kansas City Lyric Opera, and the Quixotic performance group, an eclectic celebration of fusion art. And for those who couldn't do without classical music on such a perfect night, faculty and grad students from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music will be performing original compositions throughout the evening. Classy. Several restaurants and cafes will have views of the action, including Re:Verse New American Bistro, and Baja 600, with its innovative take on Mexican favorites. Sounds like a delightful evening to me. Guests at the Sheraton Suites Country Club Plaza are just steps away from this unique cultural and artistic event.
