okjoes.jpgYou'd do yourself a disservice by not having barbecue in Kansas City. With more than 80 places specializing in barbecue in the city, you know it's a big deal. Everyone in town has a recommendation for you, and as a non-resident, I may be risking my neck by offering my own picks, but here are some strong contenders for best in town.

Arthur Bryant's is probably the best known of Kansas City's barbecue royalty, tracing its roots back to the source. What it lacks in ambiance it makes up for in excellent smoked brisket, ribs and "burnt ends," the caramelized ends of briskets. Gates Bar-B-Q has similar heritage to Arthur Bryant's but more locations and at least one high-profile supporter.

Fiorella's Jack Stack is the closest to the Sheraton Suites Country Club Plaza, and also happens to be a good friend's mother's favorite. It's a little upscale compared to the others, but no less authentic. I recently enjoyed some tasty burnt ends — of which they offer not only brisket, but also ham, pork and sausage. The sauce is tangy-sweet, and the meat just falls apart.

My personal favorite, though, is Oklahoma Joe's. Certainly the best barbecue in a gas station anywhere, I was blown away by the well-spiced ribs, the smokey barbecue chicken and the tender pulled pork. Definitely worth waiting in line.

Shuttlecocks.jpgThe Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is one of Kansas City's premier attractions, boasting European masterpieces by Caravaggio and El Greco as well as an extensive collection of Asian art, but the work that has come to define it is also its most whimsical. An outdoor installation by Claes Oldenberg and Coosje van Bruggen entitled Shuttlecocks features, well, four jumbo-sized badminton shuttlecocks. Opinions were sharply divided when it was unveiled in 1994, with some patrons proclaiming their love for the playful four-part outdoor sculpture, and others decrying the display as "not art," and therefore unworthy of sharing space with works by Calder and Rodin. But most of the critics were eventually won over, and the Shuttlecocks are now the defining image of the museum, delighting young and old with their artistic treatment of the backyard summertime pastime. Admission is always free at this world-class museum, so drop by and decide for yourself if Shuttlecocks are art, whimsy, or something else entirely. The museum is convenient to several Starwood hotels, including the Westin Crown Center, Kansas City.

ElbowChocolate.jpgThe vibrant flavors of the caramels, truffles, and bon bons created at the world-class confectioner Christopher Elbow Chocolates (1819 McGee St.) are matched by their colorfully airbrushed and glittered exteriors, gems that would feel just as home underneath a jewelry case. These are a special gift to bring home for yourselves or loved ones, as are the range of bars that vary from intense to playful; Elbow even makes one that's studded with crackly popping candy and explodes in your mouth. But don't miss Elbow's "liquid chocolate," or drinking chocolate, while in the store. It's really about as far from ordinary hot chocolate as exists anywhere. Ranging in flavors from sweet and creamy to hot and spicy, the liquid chocolate packs the buzzy punch of an espresso, so don't drink it too fast! Sip it slowly and savor the layers.

The sweet temptation of Christopher Elbow Chocolates is a short ride from your room at the the Westin Crown Center Kansas City. It's the perfect chance to visit and taste the creations of one of America's most forward-thinking chocolate makers in the city that inspires him. Are you ready for such flavors as absinthe, banana curry, yuzu, and bourbon pecan?

The Foodie Playground Of Kansas City

Friday December 12, 2008

The historic River Market district of Kansas City is lovely, even now as the cold of winter sets in. It's a food lover's playground, thanks in no small part to the recently refurbished The City Market, one of the oldest and largest public farmer's markets in the Midwest. Plus, it's not too far from the Westin Crown Center.

One of the best-loved restaurants in River Market is Le Fou Frog, which serves a combination of classic French bistrot fare — coq au vin, (Kansas City strip) steak au poivre — along with unexpected dishes such as sweet and savory-spiced kangaroo loin.

For something even more exotic, pay a visit to the Blue Nile Cafe for hearty Ethiopian food, including some of the city's best vegetarian dining. On the other hand, if you're desperate to get some classic Kansas City-style barbeque ribs, Winslow's is your place. (They've got smoked turkey, beef and pulled pork, too.)
