Tuesday September 30, 2008

WIstanbul.jpgIstanbul is one of my favorite cities on the planet, because every stroll through town, no matter how brief, feels like a foray into a world of fantasy. From the mouthwatering aroma of the kebab stands to the chilling sounds of the call to prayer from the müezzins, a visit to this gem of a city always provides plenty of fond travel memories. If you're ready for an Istanbul adventure, now is a perfect time. The brand-new W Istanbul is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, with last-minute rates of at least 20% off regular rates for stays during the next two weekends. Located in the Akaretler Row Houses, the hotel is convenient to Istanbul's finest attractions. And when you've marveled at the eclectic mix of cultures and influences that make this city great, head back to the hotel for a refreshing drink of raki at the W Lounge, followed by a gourmet meal at Jean-George's Spice Market restaurant. Welcome Desk 200.jpgThe W Istanbul is housed in a handsome landmark building that dates back more than 130 years, but design elements from some of the 21st century's most talented artisans give it an air of modern luxury and elegance. The timeless experience begins as soon as guests enter the hotel, as their first view is of a Marmara marble check-in area where crystals, jewelry, carved stones, and curtains create an atmosphere of mystery, eroticism, and glamor. The front desk itself (pictured) is a work of modern art. Designed to resemble a jewelry box, it features original crystals under a cut-glass table top, an emerald tree pattern, and distinct mood lighting to strike the right note with arriving guests. The nearby SIP and Living Room lounge areas, meanwhile, feature the long, plush Ottoman-style seating areas preferred by the sultans along with contemporary flourishes like brass-clad columns, portable black partitions, and elegant wooden side contours. And of course, you're in for a feast for all the senses at the Spice Market restaurant. Light-colored leather seats and tables, oak wood trim, and a patterned ceiling ensure that your eyes will take in almost as much as your taste buds. It simply must be seen to be believed, so take advantage of one of the hotel's special offers and visit the future of hospitality in Istanbul.

Turkish Delight at the W Istanbul

Monday August 4, 2008

W_Istanbul.jpgThe new W Istanbul represents the very best of classic and modern styles, with roots in the Ottoman Empire and flourishes from the most forward-thinking minds of the 21st century. The hotel is located within the Akaretler Row Houses, a carefully restored series of buildings constructed in the 1870's by Sultan Abdülaziz to house the workers of the nearby Dolmabahce Palace. The hotel's exterior reflects the pervasive western influence felt in Istanbul in the early- to mid-19th century, with a neoclassical design, intricate stonework, and majestic wood accents. On the inside, designers created a space of unparalleled beauty, with the latest technology and amenities set against a backdrop of Ottoman sophistication. From the welcome area - with furniture upholstered with quilted turban material and classical handicrafts along the walls - to the Living Room Lounge, which resembles a harem with its romantic screens and sedir seating, no detail was neglected in creating an oasis of luxury and relaxation. Naturally, guest rooms and suites are fit for a sultan, with W Signature Beds, goose down pillows and duvets, flat-screen televisions, and marble bathrooms. But don't take our word for it, come see the W Istanbul for yourself and experience the best of Istanbul's past, present, and future.

When thinking about Istanbul—the most populous city in Turkey with settlement dating back to 5500 BC—one would hardly imagine contemporary designs or upscale dining and shopping. With its first move to Europe, W Hotels is bringing its edgy design and social flare to the 4th largest city in the world with W Istanbul.

Scheduled to open in April, the W Istanbul will serve as the centerpiece of the redevelopment of the landmark Akaretler Row Houses in Besiktas. The historical Row was constructed by Sultan Adbulaziz in the l870’s to house workers of the Dolmabahce Palace, a symbol of the magnificence and decadence of the 19th century Ottoman Empire. Located in the Besiktas district of Istanbul, known for its destination restaurants, bars and cafes, the W Istanbul will be in close proximity to the Bosphorus Strait and Nisantasi, the SoHo of Istanbul. The hotel will also be a stone’s throw away from the Museum of Painting and Sculpture and a short drive to the Old City, the Blue Mosque and the Istanbul Modern art museum.

Of all the cities I've ever visited, Istanbul is one of my top favorites. From the tantalizing scents of the Spice Market to the entrancing calls to prayer that emanate from the minarets dotting the skyline five times a day, Istanbul is the fulfillment of every serious traveler's desire for fascinating history, exotic adventure, and good old-fashioned fun. Istanbul is at once both modern and ancient, with cutting-edge technology and all the latest luxuries appearing side-by-side with relics from the Roman, Byzantium, Latin, and Ottoman empires. And if you've never made your way to Turkey's most populous city, there's no time like the present. That's because the Sheraton Istanbul Maslak Hotel is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, with last-minute rates of at least 20% off regular rates for stays during the next two weekends. The Sheraton Istanbul Maslak Hotel is located in the city's new business district, just minutes away from Istanbul's greatest attractions by taxi or public transportation (which is both cheap and convenient). Start your day by exploring Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, Istanbul's two most famous landmarks, and then spend an afternoon seeing how the sultans lived with a tour through beautiful Topkapi Palace. Shoppers will enjoy a jaunt through the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest covered markets in the world, with shops selling everything from clothing and carpets to jewelry and artwork. To end the day with a spectacular view, head back to the hotel for dinner at the Sky Restaurant & Bar. The fine Turkish cuisine and sweeping panorama of the city and sea might provide just enough inspiration to help you start planning your next Starpicks getaway.

Feel the Music in Istanbul

Friday September 28, 2007

Akbank%20Jazz%20200.jpgIstanbul is one of my favorite cities in the world because it's truly a feast for the senses. From the sight of the towering minarets of Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque to the aroma of sizzling lamb kebabs and fresh seafood, Istanbul is a pleasure to behold no matter how you take it in. Over the next couple of weeks, the focus will be on the sweet sounds of various styles of music, as the city hosts the Akbank Jazz Festival (pictured) over ten music-filled days in October. First held in 1991, the festival has grown to become one of the world's premiere jazz events, having welcomed renowned artists like Max Roach, Don Cherry, Nat Adderly, and John Zorn. This year promises to be one of the best yet, with an international cast of musical characters as diverse as jazz itself. Guests at the Sheraton Istanbul Maslak Hotel can experience the best of modern music in this ancient Turkish city.

Best of East and West in Istanbul

Thursday June 28, 2007

Topkapi.jpgThe grand city of Istanbul, Turkey is bisected by a strait known as the Bosphorus, which divides the city's European and Asian sides. This nexus of two continents can be seen in many of Istanbul's main attractions, and, as the Atlanta Journal-Constitution points out, visitors will appreciate the unique mix of cultures as they wander the streets of this historic city. One of the most important landmarks in Istanbul is the Hagia Sophia (pronounced Aya Sofia), which began as a church when it was built in the sixth century, and then was turned into a mosque, and finally a museum. Visitors will appreciate the amazing architecture, intricate tilework, and delicate calligraphy of this impressive structure. Another popular destination is the Topkapi Palace. The sultans made a home here for nearly 400 years, and visitors now marvel at the luxurious harem and royal living quarters (pictured). The city's two main bazaars are definitely worth a visit to pick up some bargains and get a big dose of local flavor. The Spice Market has spices and other exotic foods like caviar and sweet treats. The Grand Bazaar, with its 4,000 shops, is a great place to shop as well as to eat, with restaurants serving the traditional Turkish şiş kebap, among other dishes. The Sheraton Istanbul Maslak Hotel is conveniently located in Istanbul's new business district, while the W Istanbul, which is slated to open next year, is the centerpiece of the redeveloped, landmark Akaretler Row Houses in Besiktas.

Sights and Sounds of Istanbul

Monday May 7, 2007

House%20caf.jpgIstanbul is a city of dreams, with minarets soaring over shimmering waters, and miles of serpentine streets with a new delight around every corner. The New York Times has a nifty rundown of some of this ancient city's must-see attractions. Shoppers will love the 600-year-old Grand Bazaar, with over 4,000 shops selling everything from scented oils to handmade carpets, tea sets, and jewelry. Then take a look at how the rulers lived at Topkapi Palace. The 10:00 a.m. harem tour provides a glimpse of this elaborate castle of blue tile, stained glass, and objects of art. For a modern take on Turkish cuisine, Ciya Sofrasi restaurant serves up delicious savory dishes of diyarbakir guvec (a stew of lamb, tomatoes, and eggplants) along with tantalizing desserts and fruit juices. Starwood has two great new properties opening up in Istanbul. The Sheraton Istanbul Maslak Hotel, situated in the new business district, is now accepting reservations for arrival on or after June 15, 2007, while the W Istanbul, located in the heart of the city, is expected to open its doors to guests on January 1, 2008.

Enchanting Istanbul

Thursday April 5, 2007

Bosphor.jpgIstanbul is one of the world's most amazing cities, with a minaret-adorned skyline that's nothing short of mesmerizing. This story in the Houston Chronicle explains how Istanbul, and Turkey itself, continues to act as a bridge between the eastern and western worlds. One of Istanbul's main features is the Hagia Sophia. Now a museum, it dates back to the year 537, when the enormous domed structure was built as the Church of the Divine Wisdom by the Christian Byzantine rulers of the time. It was destroyed and rebuilt twice, most recently opening as a mosque in 1453. The nearby Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, is a rather young building for the area, dating back only to the early 1600's. One of the most striking features of the city, it's still a functioning mosque, and visitors are welcome. One of the best ways to see both the European and Asian sides of this city that straddles two continents is to take a boat cruise along the Bosphorus (pictured), the narrow straight that connects the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea. Istanbul is a great city for walking as well, and a stroll through the Grand Bazaar, one of the world's largest covered markets, makes for some great exercise. And with more than 4,000 shops selling everything from spices to carpets to decorative boxes, you're sure to find a bargain on a great souvenir. Don't hesitate to negotiate! Guests at the Sheraton Istanbul Maslak Hotel will enjoy the sights and sounds of this magical city.
