More It's a Race to the Checkered Flag at the Indy 500
Tuesday April 21, 2009
Some sporting events are big, like a Major League baseball game. Others are huge, like the Super Bowl. But the Indianapolis 500 is in another category entirely, because it represents the largest single-day sporting event in the world, with an estimated 400,000 gathering at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to watch the daring drivers go 500 miles around a track full of twists and turns at speeds that regularly eclipse 200 mph. This year's race, which will be held on Sunday, May 24, 2009, marks the 93rd running of this vaunted event, with drivers from around the world vying for the cup, prize money, and the ceremonial glass of milk that awaits at the finish line. If you've only ever seen racing on TV, then you haven't experienced racing at all, because it's loud, it's fast, and the excitement never ends. Guests at the Westin Indianapolis or any of Starwood's Indianapolis properties might want to head to the "Brickyard" to be a part of this legendary racing event.

Wednesday January 28, 2009
If all you know about Indianapolis is that it hosts the Indy 500 each May, it's time to pay it a personal visit. After all, Indiana's capital and largest city is also the home of the Children's Museum of Indianapolis (the largest of its kind), the Indianapolis Zoo (which boasts the world's biggest enclosed dolphin show), and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, with everything from Chinese paintings from the Ming and Qing dynasties to one of the best collections of American Expressionist paintings in the country. More Noshing in Indy's Next Hip Neighborhood
Monday May 19, 2008Indianapolis may be in the middle of the heartland, but that doesn't mean there's no hipster haven. In fact, just a few minutes away from the Westin Indianapolis is a bohemian little neighborhood called Fountain Square full of galleries, nightclubs, antique shops and restaurants well worth exploring.
Iaria's has been serving up classic dishes since 1933, so you know they must be doing something right. For a more modern take on Italian, check out Deano's Vino, where the wine-friendly, seasonal menu pairs beautifully with a glass or two of your favorite varietal. Shelbi Street Cafe and Bistro in the Fountain Square Building is great for a light meal before heading to the duckpin bowling alley next door — the menu is loaded with salads and simple sandwiches. For something a bit heavier, try the Smokehouse on Shelby. And be sure to check out the building's rooftop cafe (weather permitting) for an amazing view of the Indy skyline.
The World's Largest Children's Museum in Indianapolis
Monday December 10, 2007The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is the largest museum of its kind in the world, with four levels of attractions designed to educate and delight kids of all ages. The 400,000-square-foot facility houses eleven major galleries that explore everything from physical and natural sciences to world cultures and the arts. The Dinosphere exhibit, for example, includes one of the largest displays of cretaceous period dinosaur skeletons in the world, and offers a hands-on dig, interactive stations, and lessons in dino fossil preparation. Little rail fans will love All Aboard!, a Victorian-era steam railway depot with a 19th century locomotive and tool car, as well as recreation of the 1890's river town of Madison, Indiana. When I was a kid, I always loved planetariums, so I'd definitely want to check out the SpaceQuest Planetarium, which boasts a DigiStar sky projection system, over 50 slide and video projectors, and a full surround sound system. Grab the kids and take a seat in this state-of-the-art theater for a show like Cosmic Canopy, Season of Light, and the always-popular Far, Far Away: The Worlds of Star Wars. It could easily take all day to see everything in this fascinating museum, but when it's all over, the nearby Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre Hotel will provide a perfect place to kick back and rest knowing that you gave the kids an educational and rewarding day.
