Most avid travelers have spent at least some time in Chicago's O'Hare Airport, but few give much thought to just how groundbreaking the airport was when it began operating commercial flights in 1955. Those curious about the colorful history of O'Hare should make their way to the Chicago Architecture Foundation, where a special exhibit entitled ORD: Documenting the Definitive Modern Airport gives some perspective to the many innovative features of O'Hare that have since become standard at airports around the world. Did you know, for example, that design strategies such as the central parking garage, movable jetway bridge, and two-tiered entryway separating arrivals from departures were all pioneered at O'Hare? I didn't. The exhibit features a selection of architectural photographs that portray O'Hare from different angles over the years, such as the 1988 photo "Tarmac T2" by Robert Burley and the1963 photo, "Entryway Drive Upper Level and Terminal Buildings, Chicago O'Hare International Airport" by Hedrick Blessing. It's a fascinating look at the history and significance of one of the world's busiest airports. The show runs through May 1, 2009. The Chicago Architecture Foundation is a short walk from several Starwood properties, including the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers.
