Birmingham Fiesta 200.jpgFor generations, the American South has been shaped by a never-ending influx of different immigrant groups, creating the eclectic mix of cultures that's evident today. On Saturday, October 18, 2008, the city of Birmingham will celebrate the contributions of its Latin American residents at the Birmingham Fiesta 2008. Now in its sixth year, the fiesta brings together more than 20,000 patrons who come to learn about Hispanic culture and enjoy music, dance, and food from countries as varied as Mexico, Cuba, and Guatemala. The festival will be comprised of several different themed villas, including the Main Music Stage (get ready to salsa), the Arts Village (with everything from Aztec calendars to balloon sculptures), and the Storytelling Village, focusing on the interactive art of storytelling in two languages. Naturally, the Multi-Cultural Food Village is one of the most popular parts of the festival, with an eclectic range of cuisine that goes far beyond beans and rice. The Sheraton Birmingham Hotel is a short walk from the festival.

Birmingham's Barbecue Bites

Wednesday August 27, 2008

dreamlandbbq.jpgThere's more to Birmingham's restaurant scene than barbecue — but the barbecue is so good, you may not even notice. Here's a few places to try while you're staying at the Sheraton Birmingham:

Dreamland BBQ, a 50-year-old spot known best for its ribs. It's now a chain, but this is the original.

Bob Sykes BarB-Q hickory smokes pork picnic roasts because the bone adds flavor to the meat.

Full Moon Bar-B-Que makes up for on flavor what it lacks in ambiance.

Big Daddy's Bar-B-Q is worth the drive to suburban Warrior, according to the Birmingham News' Best Ribs contest.

If you need a little help waking up from a 'cue-induced food coma, Urban Standard is the place to go for some well-brewed coffee — and a little lunch, if you've got room. Report back and let us know what you think about Birmingham's best 'cue.
