The soaring and whimsical architecture of Barcelona is most closely identified with Antoni Gaudi, but a host of talented architects contributed to its memorable skyline as well. Lluís Domènech i Montaner (1850-1923), for example, designed several buildings in the modernisme català style that went on to become defining structures of the city. His Palau de la Música Catalana celebrates its centennial in 2008, so there's no better time than now to take in a performance. Its concert hall is considered one of the finest in the world, hosting performances of opera and classical music - as well as jazz, flamenco, and folk - for discerning fans from Spain and around the world. Highlights of this season include performances of Vivaldi, Sibelius, and my personal favorite, Debussy. A tip: try to take in a daytime performance, or else arrange a tour while the sun is still out. The auditorium, with its ornate stained-glass ceiling, is the only concert hall of its kind in Europe that is illuminated during daylight hours entirely by natural light. Guests at Le Méridien Barcelona might enjoy a visit to this living piece of musical and architectural history.

Sansandsans.jpgWhile I'm a devoted tea drinker, I adore the scent of freshly roasted coffee, and on certain occasions, a frothy cappuccino is just the thing. On the other hand, my husband, is the biggest coffee snob I know, and can't function without his morning espresso. The perfect place for us in Barcelona? Cafés El Magnifico and Sans & Sans Fine Tea Merchants. The former is Spain's finest coffee roaster, located at at number 64 Carrer de l'Argenteria, about a ten minute walk from Le Méridien Barcelona And the latter is just across the street at number 59. Both shops are run by Salvador Sans, a third generation coffee roaster who brought the family business into the gourmet realm nearly three decades ago, and has built a solid reputation around his brand.

Burlap bags stacked on either side of the coffee shop's entry are nearly busting with beans from the world's best destinations for coffee bush cultivation. Places like Sumatra, Colombia, Ethiopia and Kenya are stamped upon their rough brown surfaces. Each day Sans roasts a new batch, and offers a free sample to customers as they enter. I'll leave my husband here to chat with the friendly proprietor, and head across the street where they've also got a sample of the day's leafy brew on hand. It could be a Lung Ching green tea, a Darjeeling, or some exceptional herbal concoction like the Infusion Equilibrio, which mixes Rooiboos with honey and chamomile. With nearly 300 types, it's hard to know what the day's special will be, but I've always got my fingers crossed for a transporting cup of fine Earl Grey. Both shops offer their products in bulk, and carry a range of tea and coffee accessories like cups, pots and filters. Set aside some room in the carry on.

santamariabarcelona.jpgI've written about tapas in Barcelona before; they're ubiquitous and delicious, the bar food and light snack of the city. But what if you want to break the mold a little? Here are a couple good spots to beyond just tapas when you stay at Le Méridien Barcelona.

Buenas Migas serves tapas, but it's best known for its scrumptious take on focaccia including a delicious mozzarella and zucchini variation. It's a little bit of Genoa in Catalonia.

It seems hard to write about Spanish cuisine without invoking Ferrand Adrià; in Barcelona, a couple of his students have opened Santa Maria a tapas bar like none other. Well, one other: its sister restaurant, simply Santa, a couple blocks away. El Bulli's cutting edge techniques meet traditional small plates in these intimate restaurants, and draws a very fashionable crowd.

The New York Times recently reviewed some of the more creative yet affordable restaurants in Barcelona; I'd recommend checking out Hisop, where minimalism applies to both the ambiance and the dishes, but not the flavor.

Niall Twamley is the Branded Experience Analyst at the Starwood Cork CCC office. This week, he takes us to Spain, then to Germany for some sporting history.

In many of the world's major cities, sports venues are major tourist attractions. In many parts of the world, football (soccer) fans can visit the iconic venues where their heroes of past and present have played for sporting glory. Many of the more famous English and Spanish clubs operate museums at their grounds where the faithful can relive past glories and get up close and personal with each club's crown jewels: all their championship trophies.

In Spain, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona incorporate their club museums with tours of their iconic stadiums which have played host to many past glories. Guests at the Westin Palace, Madrid or the Le Meridien Barcelona can add either of these sporting theatres to their itineraries.

Sometimes the sound of waves lapping the shore is all you need to reconnect with tranquility. But having some time to really listen to music also helps with recharge and focus. The perfect place to indulge in this relaxing, and enlightening combination is Le Méridien Ra Beach Hotel & Spa, a luxurious resort located directly on Spain's Mediterranean coast, 35 miles south of Barcelona, and one of the newest members of the Starwood Spa Collection.

Guests can indulge in endless pampering at the resort's Ra Wellness Thalasso Spa, which includes an iodine-rich seawater pool, solarium, and a wealth of therapeutic treatments which utilize the natural treasures of the Mediterranean Sea. The museum tells the story of Casals' life and career through displays of musical instruments and memorabilia, and each July, a festival is held in the auditorium across the street, in the cellist's honor.

The Surreal Parks of Barcelona

Monday October 29, 2007

People often describe Barcelona as a surreal place, and what they're referring to is the mark put on the city by some of its legendary surrealist artists and architects. Creative minds such as Antoni Gaudí, Joan Miró and other members of the Spanish Art Nouveau movement had a profound effect on Barcelona in the early part of the 20th century, and rather than being cloistered behind gallery walls, some of their most creative work can be seen in the city's beautiful sculpture gardens.

Parc Guëll and Parc Joan Miró are beautiful examples of the inventive designs of these artists. Parc Guëll, for example, features some of Gaudi's most fascinating works, including a curved double staircase, pavilions with colored tiles and pointy spires, and a serpentine bench that looks like it was plucked from the dreams of Dr. Seuss. Parc Joan Miró, the newer of the two parks, has a great collection of the artist's sculptures, including the 70-foot-tall Dona i Ocell which is a rather loose interpretation of a woman and a bird. Scandalous even when it was completed just a year before Miró's death in 1983, today it's one of the most popular pieces of outdoor art in the city, drawing legions of visitors during the warm weather months. Le Méridien Barcelona is a perfect jumping-off point for an artistic tour of the city, located on the iconic Las Ramblas thoroughfare and convenient to some of Barcelona's greatest attractions.

Barcelona's Parade of Giants

Friday September 21, 2007

Barcelona's annual Festival of La Merce will be held September 21-24, filling the streets of this colorful city with traditional Catalan music, dancing, acrobatics, and a special appearance by the gigantes. That's right, one of the highlights of the festival, which honors Mare de Deu de la Merce, the Patron Saint of Barcelona, is a parade of giants, which are actually oversized effigies of kings, queens, and nobles that wander the streets to the delight of crowds. Plus there's the phenomenal human tower competitions, as pictured, but perhaps best viewed by turning your screen as all the video on it was filmed sideways...

If that's not enough of a thrill, though, put on a hat, long-sleeved shirt, and glasses to get close-up look at the fire run. The correfoc, as it's known, involves a collection of "devils" from various community groups who run up and down the streets with firecrackers, fountains, and sparklers, keeping a good distance from the fire breathing dragons who pursue them along thoroughfares such as the Via Laietana. The main correfoc is held in the evening, but a tamer version earlier in the day can be enjoyed by children and skittish adults. Guests at Le Méridien Barcelona, ideally located on Las Ramblas, the iconic boulevard of leisure and entertainment in Barcelona, are just steps away from this historic and fascinating festival.

In Barcelona, Tapas are Tops

Monday September 3, 2007

pinotxo.jpgHere in Chicago, there's a restaurant called Tapas Barcelona — as if that city was the only word that could possibly come to mind following the Spanish term for small plates. Hey, I can't say I blame them — it's the same leap my mind makes. One could easily organize a tour of the city that Gaudi built around its tapas bars... heck, somebody already has (and if you want to learn how to make tapas, you can do that too.)

But with so many tapas bars and so little time, why not cut to the chase and just hit the ones that are worth your while? Here's a day's meal schedule for you to try while you're at Le Méridien Barcelona:

  • Your first stop in should be the Boqueria Market, where in addition to an amazing array of fresh produce, seafood and meats is a little place called Pinotxo. Named after its owner's nickname (his long nose reminded friends of Pinocchio), this is legendary avant-garde chef Ferrand Adria's favorite place for tapas and a regular haunt for local chefs. Get there early in the morning to join them in incredibly fresh seafood that goes straight from la plancha to you, delayed only briefly for a drizzle of olive oil and sea salt.

  • Next, line up early for lunch at the famous Cal Pep so you don't have to wait for a seat at the bar. Put your trust in the staff and you'll be rewarded with delicacies like mariscos mixtos, yellow fin tuna tartare, mussels vinaigrette and more. Afterwards, burn off the food coma with a wander through the nearby Picasso Museum.

  • For dinner, head to Alta Taberna Paco Meralgo, a spot less familiar to tourists than Cal Pep but no less good. Order some tomato bread while you peruse the menu and make your way through some tapas and montaditos (small snacks served on slices of crusty bread), but leave room for paella or the hearty braised beef. The wine list here also shines.
