With so much happening around the world these days, keeping up with the news is more important than ever. For many travelers, CNN is the preferred source of breaking news, and for anybody who has ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at the world's largest news gathering organization, the network offers tours of its world news headquarters in Atlanta. The Inside CNN Studio Tour gives visitors a glimpse of the network's inner workings, from a replica of the Control Room, which brings to life the fast-paced environment of live television, to the CNN Overlook, which offers sweeping views of the newsroom in action. For those who think they could read the news as well as any professional anchor, there's Studio 7E, a black box studio where visitors experience the technology that's used to broadcast the news and weather every day. Who knows, you might catch the broadcasting bug and embark on a new career. Guests at the W Atlanta - Midtown or any of Starwood's Atlanta-area hotels and resorts might enjoy this fascinating journey through news-gathering history.

Eat Like a Star in Atlanta

Monday September 29, 2008

ludacrisyeo.jpgAtlanta is all the buzz this month over the opening of Straits, a new Atlanta outpost that brings Singapore's "hawker stall" cuisine to the States. It's co-owned by Atlanta's Chris "Ludacris" Bridges and Chef Chris Yeo, and has become an instant hit, not just thanks to star power. The full-flavored food is what what moved Ludacris to bring this Bay Area restaurant to his hometown.

The restaurant, which is about 2 miles from the W Atlanta Midtown, has a nightclub feel, with multiple floors and a mix of loungy and traditional seating. Small plates abound, but the main courses are outstanding, too.

Ludacris is frequently at the restaurant, so you might get a celebrity sighting along with your kung pao chicken lollipops (his favorite).

Local Restaurant Knowledge on Your iPhone

Monday September 15, 2008

localseatiphone.jpgSometimes it's nice not to have to do a bunch of research on where to eat while traveling — especially on a last-minute trip somewhere you haven't been before. Fortunately, there's a new application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that puts restaurant recommendations at your fingertips. Local Eats is a compact version of WhereTheLocalsEat.com dining guides. It contains an easily searchable database of the top 100 restaurants as chosen by local foodies in 50 American cities. Restaurants range from diners to fine dining, from Chinese to French, so you won't be stuck with just the most expensive places.

The restaurant entries are searchable alphabetically or by cuisine, and in some cities by neighborhood as well. Each listing includes contact info, price range, reviews, a link to a website if the restaurant has one, and directions via Google Maps. A GPS feature lets you search for what's close by wherever you are: Near the W Atlanta Midtown, for instance, it recommends Tamarind Seed Thai Bistro, South City Kitchen and Einstein's, all excellent choices within blocks of the hotel.

While you might quibble with some of the selections in your own home town (I wouldn't rate all six Billy Goat locations in Chicago as having the "best burgers"), when you're in an unfamiliar city looking for food, Local Eats is a great place to start — and it's right in your pocket.

Martinis%20and%20IMAX%20160.jpgThere are often trade-offs in travel. You can do something educational and intellectually stimulating, such as going to a museum, or you can do something frivolous and fun, like letting loose at a cocktail bar, but you can't do both at the same time. Or can you? The Fernbank Museum of Natural History in Atlanta is bridging the gap between brainy and breezy with its special Martinis & IMAX events, which add an extra element of fun and mischief to the normally cerebral museum experience. Every Friday at 5:30 p.m., visitors can enjoy cool cocktails, tasty cuisine, amazing films, and live music beneath the world's largest dinosaurs in the museum's cavernous Great Hall. It's a unique perspective on the Giants of the Mesozoic and an amusing welcome to the weekend. In a special tribute to summer on Friday, June 20, (that's the solstice, for those who care to notice such things) the museum will offer special picnic packages with summer-inspired martinis, two IMAX tickets, and a picnic-style dinner for two. It's a fine way to celebrate the first day of summer and all the adventure and fun it represents. Starwood has hotels throughout the Atlanta region, including the stylish W Atlanta - Midtown, whose Whiskey Park lounge is the perfect place to enjoy one more martini before turning in for the night and dreaming of dinosaurs. Happy, friendly, vegetarian dinosaurs.

Comfort Food in Atlanta

Thursday May 8, 2008

The South is practically synonymous with comfort food. Soul food, biscuits and gravy, mashed potatoes and ham... just makes you want to sit back and loosen your belt. There's no shortage of comfort food within easy reach of the W Atlanta Midown, but for the truly great stuff, you should also venture out of Midtown and explore what the city has to offer.

For breakfast, it's hard to beat the Flying Biscuit Cafe, a small local chain known, as you'd expect, for light-as-air biscuits and stick-to-your-ribs dishes like hotcakes and "meatloaf and pudge (pudge being mashed potatoes with sundried tomatoes, basil and olive oil). For dinner, sample South City Kitchen's upscale take on Southern classics. Starters include fried green tomatoes and pan-fried chicken livers, while main dishes range from perfectly fried chicken to crab hash to charred tuna with Carolina gold rice and sausage. Their brunch is out of this world.

Farther afield, The Colonnade is an institution for authentic Southern comfort. "Meat and three" is the mode here, with solid fried chicken anchoring down-home meals with black-eyed peas, friend okra and collard greens. It's just a notch above cafeteria, decor-wise, but worth seeking out for the food.

Stone Mountain, just sixteen miles east of downtown Atlanta, Georgia, is a perfect place to get away from the noise, traffic, and stress of the city. True to its name, the centerpiece of Stone Mountain Park is an enormous granite dome rock that rises more than 500 meters out of the Georgia soil, giving visitors an amazing view of Atlanta and the surrounding woodlands. Naturally, it's not easy to hike up the world's largest piece of exposed granite, so if you don't feel like hoofing it all the way to the top, you can take advantage of the Summit Skyride. The high-speed, Swiss-built cable car whisks people more than 825 feet off the ground and up to the summit in just minutes, affording a perfect vista of the world's largest low-relief sculpture along the way. In addition to the Skyride, there's also a scenic railroad that makes a five-mile loop around the mountain in open-air cars pulled by a 1940's locomotive. And for those who prefer to take to the open water, a paddlewheel riverboat named the Scarlett O'Hara gives twenty-minute cruises on Stone Mountain lake, bringing passengers back to a simpler time. Stone Mountain Park is a short drive from several Atlanta properties, including the W Atlanta Midtown and the Westin Buckhead Atlanta.

Atlanta is one of the cultural capitals of the south, with artistic offerings that range from classic to country and everywhere in between, making it a perfect destination for a weekend getaway. And since the Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, the time to experience Atlanta just might be right now. That's because last-minute rates are at least 20% off regular rates for stays during the next two weekends, which will leave you with enough left over to splurge on tickets to a performance at one of the city's many venues for music and theater. Take in a show at the Atlanta Opera, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, or Atlanta Ballet, or shake your booty to the hottest jazz in town at Cafe 290. But whatever you do, make sure to save a little time to explore the hotel, because the Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta is no ordinary hotel. Occupying a 73-story tower, it's one of the city's tallest buildings, and there's no better view of Atlanta than from the Sun Dial Restaurant Bar & View, which slowly revolves so everybody can enjoy a 360-degree panorama of this amazing city. The Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta is just one of many Starpicks properties this week, so check the list to find the destination that's right for you.

buckheaddiner.jpgThe Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta is like an adult playground: great stores and boutiques, plenty of bars and nightclubs, and some of the best restaurants in the city. And the Westin Buckhead Atlanta puts you right in the middle of it all, on the main drag of Peachtree Avenue.

Let's start with lunch. To refuel during a hard day of meetings (or shopping), stop into Souper Jenny, a delightful cafeteria-style eatery where the menu changes daily and the homemade soups are absolutely the stars of the show. For dinner, the Buckhead Diner is a local favorite for its upscale versions of classic comfort foods; it's the sort of place where suits and sweatpants mingle. Make sure to start with the Maytag Bleu cheese potato chips. Or step into Bone's, the city's best steakhouse (and Zagat's top-rated in the country), to rub shoulders with Atlanta's power elite. For something decidedly different, there's 10 Degrees South, which claims to be America's only South African restaurant. True or not, it's found a strong audience for its stews and other exotic dishes.
