A Shopping Stroll in Athens

Monday June 30, 2008

Those who like to walk and observe daily life as it unfolds, while exploring picturesque streets lined with traditional shops and cafes, will certainly enjoy the intriguing neighborhoods of Athens. Areas like Monastiraki, Psyrri, Aerides, and Plaka, just to the west of Constitution Square where Hotel Grande Bretagne is situated, provide vibrant glimpses into Greek society, and offer an array of charming spots to stop into for some unique souvenirs.

Just off Ermou Street, at number 2 Aghias Theklas, Stavros Melissinos, the "Poet Sandal Maker of Athens" fashions wonderful leather sandals. Some models are named after customers from past eras, like Sophia Loren, Jackie Onassis, and Jeremy Irons. The Beatles were also frequent patrons, and even Bob Sagat has been known to stop in. Nearby, the Museum of Traditional Greek Ceramics dwells within an 18th century Turkish mosque, which overlooks Monastiraki Square. On Sundays, the area is filled with all types of vendors selling antiques and handicrafts at the open-air flea market. From here, venture a few blocks south to Adrianou Street in the Plaka. At number 120, Byzantino is the best store on the street. Expert jewelers Kostas and Giorgos create fabulous pieces with precious gemstones and 22 karat gold. Splurge on some dangly earrings dripping with intricate filigree. They'll make you feel like a Byzantine Queen.

Eating Well in Athens

Monday October 29, 2007

The birthplace of democracy, Athens is one of the world's most culturally significant cities. And, far from spartan, it has developed a taste for the finer things in life as well as simple pleasures. While the restaurants at the Hotel Grande Bretagne are top-notch (I recommend watching at least one sunset from the Roof Garden; shown here in the video), there are pleasures to be found elsewhere in the city as well.

You'll no doubt be exploring the Acropolis and other historic ruins while you're in town; on your way out of Constitution Square, stop at Ariston (10 Voulis St., two blocks from the square) and pack some spanakopita or other filled phylo pies — they have the best selection in Athens — for lunch; it'll be cheaper than around the ruins. After a day exploring the ancients, ease back into civilization with dinner at Abreuvoir, Athens' oldest French restaurant. Enjoy classic dishes such as duck à l'orange or Chateaubriand under a canopy of mulberry trees in the garden.

Not all is old-fashioned and ancient is Athens, however. Restaurants such as 48 and Hytra are taking traditional dishes and ingredients to haute new heights. 48 takes cues from El Bulli's Ferrand Adria, transforming classic dishes like Greek salad and spanakopita into molecular-gastronomic delights, while Hytra offers updated, nouveau versions of dishes from Chef Yiannis Baxevanis' home of Crete. Meanwhile, Michelin-starred Varoulko wows diners with stellar seafood, innovative interpretations of working-class dishes and a stunning view of the Acropolis. Book in advance.

National Archaeological Museum of Athens

Monday September 17, 2007

Greek%20Rider%20200.jpgAfter you've visited the Acropolis and the Agora in Athens and stood in awe of these ancient wonders, you might yearn for a more in-depth look at the contributions of Greek culture throughout the ages. An afternoon in the impressive National Archaeological Museum of Athens will provide just the grounding you need to begin to comprehend the amazing influence the Greeks have had on the ancient and modern worlds. The largest museum in Greece, the National Museum is itself a piece of history, having occupied the same building since 1889.

A recent renovation, which added some much-needed air conditioning, makes the museum a top-tier attraction in Athens today, and visitors can browse extensive galleries dedicated to such themes as prehistoric art, sculpture, metalworks, and Greek art from the Hellenistic period (323 B.C. - 31 B.C.). Notable works include a statue of a boy jockey riding his steed (pictured), which was recovered from a shipwreck near Artemisium. Dating to around 220 B.C., the work illustrates the country's great history of competitive sport, as the jockey would likely have competed in equestrian events at Olympia. Early concepts of beauty and sexuality are also explored in works such as a representation of Venus, Eros, and Pan, in which the beautiful Venus repels the advances of the grotesque Pan.

Greece itself is a place of unending beauty and history at every turn, and guests at the 130-year-old Hotel Grande Bretagne - a member of Starwood's Luxury Collection - or any of Starwood's Athens properties will enjoy a trip through thousands of years of human history in this influential Greek capital.

Music of the Athens Underworld

Monday August 13, 2007

Rembetika%20200.jpgThe traditional Greek folk music known as rebetiko began in the early 1900's as the music of the poor, the dispossessed, and the underworld. Born in the hashish dens, jails, and cafes of Athens, Smyrna (Izmir), and other cities, early songs reflected lonely lives of love and loss, crime and defiance. Some particularly anti-authoritarian songs were actually banned by the government.

The reputation of rebetiko (sometimes spelled rembetika) has come a long way in the past century, though. Today, visitors to Athens can experience this "thieves' music" at a variety of charming and authentic Greek restaurants and clubs, where performers are treated like celebrities and showered with flower petals between songs by appreciative audiences.

As summer winds to a close, rebetiko season in Athens is just getting started, with local rebetiko ensembles returning from engagements in the southern islands and resort areas. One of the city's most renowned rebetadika (rebetiko clubs) is Stoa Athanaton, which was made famous by the late legend Takis Binis, and features contemporary rebetiko artists like Babis Goles and Antonis Rapanis. Make sure to get reservations for evening shows, which can be packed. Once you've got a table, though, the fun begins. Nibble on some olives, sip a glass of ouzo or Boutari Greek wine, and enjoy soulful, bluesy songs which are at once plaintive, mystical, and joyous. Starwood has three properties in Athens: the Arion Resort & Spa, the Westin Athens Astir Palace Beach Resort, and the Hotel Grande Bretagne.

Artsy Athens, Gazi Style

Thursday January 25, 2007

0124gazarte.jpgIn Athens, Gazi is a bit of an eccentricity. The former working-class 'hood was once home to Athens' gasworks and factories. Now it is the center of the Athenian art scene. Gazi and several other neighborhoods to the northwest of the Acropolis and the Hotel Grande Bretagne—Metaxourgeio, Kerameikos and Rouf, are now the go-to place in Greece for cutting edge art, achitecture, nightlife and dining. Gazarte (pictured) is a combination lounge/bar/restaurant/cultural venue that attracts a mix of artists and financial types; there are artistic destinations like Bios and bars like Mayo as well. The New York Times recommends the nightclubs of Iera Odos and the former gasworks—now a cultural center called the Technopolis. Finally, if it's possible to get tired of Greek food, this is the place to go. The neighborhood is filled with Chinese, Polish, Syrian and Albanian restaurants courtesy of the large local immigrant community.

Located in Athens, Greece, one of the world's most famous cities, the Grande Bretagne Hotel is a relatively recent addition to Starwood's Luxury Collection, requiring an 82 million Euro investment in reconstruction to create a state-of-the-art five star hotel. The Grande Bretagne opened its' doors in 1874, and through the intervening 134 years has survived various changes of ownership, disasters, two World Wars and one civil war. Athens itself, home of the historic Parthenon and Acropolis, is currently a growing European city that is the center of economic, cultural and political life in Greece, though it has been a vital metropolitan area since at least 500 BCE. In antiquity, Athens was a renowned center of learning that housed Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum, and is considered to have been the "cradle of Western civilization."
