St%20Regis%20Aspen%20Spa%20200.jpgThe Starwood Spa Collection, one of the world's largest associations of premier-level spa resorts and hotels, is better than ever for 2008, with twelve new properties that represent some of the finest spas in the world. From the Westin Hilton Head to the Sheraton Hua Hin, the new additions to the collection elevate the spa experience to an art form, utilizing the Seven Pillars of Well-Being to create treatments that relax, refresh, and rejuvenate. A variety of special offers make it easier than ever to indulge in a visit to one of these amazing destinations. The St. Regis Aspen Resort, home of the Remède Spa (pictured), for example, has the St. Regis Aspen Welcome Spa Package, which comes with one 60-minute spa treatment per person per stay, daily continental breakfast, and 4:00 p.m. late checkout (if available) for rates that start at $410 and require a two-night stay. Snow%20Sculpture%20200.jpgA thick blanket of snow can be a drag if you're trying to get around, but it also makes a lot of great things possible, such as skiing, sledding, snowball fights, and massive works of art. That's right, every winter, talented artists create big, impressive sculptures with nothing more than blocks of snow and a few basic carving tools. And this January, the world's best snow sculptors will gather in Breckenridge, Colorado for the International Snow Sculpture Championships, where they'll show off their most inventive and impressive designs, delighting onlookers and creating a snow sculpture garden that's as fleeting as winter itself. The festival, which began 18 years ago with a handful of artists armed with picks and snow shovels, has blossomed into a truly international competition where artisans create detailed pieces ranging from abstract shapes to human forms such as a Turkish whirling dervish or an oversized bust of a man's head (pictured). Come and see the sculptors in action from January 22-27, 2008, or else drop by later to view the completed works of art, which will be on display through February 3, weather permitting. It's a great opportunity to see the amazing work of dedicated artists who choose the most temporary of media to work with. Breckenridge is less than an hour away from the Sheraton Mountain Vista in nearby Avon.

Starpick the St. Regis Resort, Aspen

Thursday August 16, 2007

St.%20Regis%20Aspen%20Summer%20200.jpgMost people think of Aspen as a winter destination for skiing and snowboarding, but Aspen is a great place to visit throughout the year, with plenty of warm-weather activities for both active and leisure travelers. And if you've never been to Aspen before, there's no time like the present for an introduction to this mountain paradise. That's because the St. Regis Resort, Aspen is one of this week's participating Starpicks properties, which means that last-minute travelers can enjoy rates of at least 20% off regular rates for stays within the next two weeks. Whatever summertime activity you fancy, you'll find it in Aspen, from fly fishing to tennis, horseback riding to my personal favorite, whitewater rafting (nothing against the horsies, of course). And since this is the St. Regis we're talking about, you know there are plenty of good reasons to spend some time on the property as well. The Remède Spa is one of the world's finest, with high-tech treatments and timeless luxury in an exquisite and relaxing setting. And for dinner, sample some Mediterranean-inspired cuisine from executive chef Todd English, who presides over Olives Aspen restaurant. Dishes like shaved artichoke salad with fontina risotto cake and mushroom-crusted halibut will put a smile on any foodie's face. Check out this week's Starpicks properties and plan an impulsive getaway today.

Ribs and Belly Laughs in the Rockies

Thursday August 9, 2007

hickoryhouse.jpgColorado isn't known for its barbecue, but should you get a hankering while you're staying at the St. Regis Aspen, you'll have your choice of not one but two highly regarded rib shops.

You'll be in good hands at the Hickory House. The self-proclaimed "best ribs in Colorado" (a claim backed up by reviews on TripAdvisor, at least as far as Aspen goes) are just a couple blocks from the hotel. The baby-back ribs — slow smoked over, you guessed it, hickory wood and slathered with regular or habanero barbecue sauce — are fall-off-the-bone tender and zesty. Here's an in-depth review of the sister store in nearby Parker, Colorado.

Little Annie's Eating House is a local favorite; the 25-year-old restaurant offers barbecue short ribs as well as tasty burgers and chili.

I was all set to recommend Texas Red's, within walking distance of the hotel, but it turns out it just transformed into the Aspen Comedy Club. Its first show, Greg Proops of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" fame, was in the past few weeks; The owners plan to reopen the barbecue joint somewhere in the area by the end of August and this I'm sure will be cause for celebration.
