A Night Cruise on the Pearl River

Friday April 11, 2008

The word "heavenly" is used to describe many things at The Westin Guangzhou: the beds, the bath, the spa... I like to think the hotel inherits some of its idyllic nature from the nearby Pearl River, the third largest river in China. A stone island located within the river, polished by the flowing water so that it resembles a pearl, gives the river its pretty name. And a special offer at The Westin Guangzhou, a recent addition to the Starwood Spa Collection, provides guests with an enchanting night cruise for two along this mythical waterway.

En route, passengers float under brightly illuminated bridges, past magical scenes like the famous White Goose Pool, featured in Chinese legends; the architecturally diverse island of Shamian; Aiqun Mansion, China's tallest building when it was erected in 1934; Haizu Square, known as the "Red Heart of the Pearl River"; and Ta Ying Lou, called "the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Guangzhou," and one-time home of one of the region's most celebrated revolutionaries, Chen Shaobai. When the moon and the lights of the buildings illuminate the river, the scenery is stunning, making a nighttime cruise the perfect way to spend an evening after a day at The Westin Guangzhou's Heavenly Spa.

He is currently on an "around the world" spa tour with Starwood and will be posting from his various destinations throughout the month. Today, he writes to us from the Heavenly Spa at the Westin Guangzhou in China, one of the newest members of the Starwood Spa Collection.

The new Heavenly Spa at the Westin Guangzhou is now open! The facilities are amazing, with beautiful water features at the entrance, unique wall coverings and luxuriously appointed treatment rooms, each one complete with a rack of Chinese chimes that indicate when your treatment is about to begin. And the treatments are exquisite, including a variety of traditional Chinese remedies, signature Heavenly Spa services, or the East meets West massage if you want to experience a blend from both hemispheres. But the best part of the spa is the friendly smiles from the staff, eager to practice their English while serving you a cup of herbal tea.

Sometimes the sound of waves lapping the shore is all you need to reconnect with tranquility. But having some time to really listen to music also helps with recharge and focus. The perfect place to indulge in this relaxing, and enlightening combination is Le Méridien Ra Beach Hotel & Spa, a luxurious resort located directly on Spain's Mediterranean coast, 35 miles south of Barcelona, and one of the newest members of the Starwood Spa Collection.

Guests can indulge in endless pampering at the resort's Ra Wellness Thalasso Spa, which includes an iodine-rich seawater pool, solarium, and a wealth of therapeutic treatments which utilize the natural treasures of the Mediterranean Sea. For a dose of culture, guests need only venture a mile down the road where they'll find The Pau Casals Museum. The regal Mediterranean manor was the birthplace of one of Catalonia's greatest classical music stars, Pau Casals, known professionally as Pablo Casals, who spent his later years in Puerto Rico. The museum tells the story of Casals' life and career through displays of musical instruments and memorabilia, and each July, a festival is held in the auditorium across the street, in the cellist's honor.

One of my favorite vendors, Life is Good®, was also exhibiting at the International Spa Association’s annual conference last month. How can you not like a company based completely and entirely on optimism? The company was founded in 1994 by two brothers without business backgrounds who recognized the power of a simple reminder, “life is good.” They have subsequently built an empire out of sharing that message on t-shirts, hats, smokeless candles, fleece blankets and even water bottles.

They also host several festivals throughout the year which are sponsored by Four Points by Sheraton. You can find Life is Good® and other feel-good retail items in the Four Points by Sheraton online retail store. Another way to get more optimism in your life is to redeem SPG points for Life is Good® merchandise on SPG.com.

spa_summit.jpgJeremy McCarthy is the Director of Spa Operations Development and Marketing for Starwood Hotels & Resorts and thelobby.com's expert on everything spa. Throughout the upcoming week, he will be posting tales from Paris where he has just returned from the annual European Spa summit.

I’ve spent the past few days in Europe hearing from different European spa leaders on the state of the industry, the challenges we face and the ways to overcome them. Much like in the U.S., Europe is dealing with the rapid growth and demand of the spa industry. The clear message for spas is simple: the days of “if you build it they will come” are over. Spas need to be created in the right way and marketed in the right way to stand out amidst a sea of growing competition.

The European Spa Summit, hosted in Paris this October, focused on the importance of not only treating customers through their 5 physical senses, but also by considering an important 6th sense: “service.” While I do agree that service is of tantamount importance in the spa setting, I look at the senses as channels to deliver that service. That is why the new Heavenly Spa concept for Westin Hotels and Resorts was developed with 7 senses in mind. The five traditional, physical senses of sight, sound, taste, smell and touch, and then two additional senses, spirit and emotion. The spa, as an extension of our hotels, is an extension of the excellent customer service we provide. By considering all the senses, we can provide that service in different and deeper ways.

AQUA Day Spa in Australia

Thursday October 5, 2006

AQUA%20Day%20Spa1.jpgBecause too much of a good thing is never enough, Thelobby.com is extending Spa Month into October. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride as we profile some of Starwood's hottest spas.

Located in the beautiful Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia, the AQUA Day Spa is a tranquil oasis in which to relax, unwind, and be pampered by a team of highly-trained spa professionals. With a focus on the Starwood Spa Collection's Seven Pillars of Well Being, guests leave the AQUA Day Spa feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the world. Spa Manager Samantha Howard took a few minutes from her busy schedule to answer some questions about the spa.

How long has the spa been open?

The spa opened in December, 2000, just in time for our busy summer season.

Have any unique or noteworthy events occured at the spa since then?

We've had local and international celebrities enjoying the AQUA Day Spa since we opened, but the most interesting story occurred just the other day, when we had our first wedding proposal during a treatment. It was quite exciting. A female client was getting a massage and facial and noticed that there was an engagement ring hung under the head piece. She was asked to read a story about the supposed good fortune enjoyed by the woman who wears the ring, and then at the end of her treatment she was presented with a fortune card with the proposal inside! Her nervous husband-to-be was waiting just outside the door, and walked in after she received the fortune card to await her response. She said yes!

What are some of the signature treatments that define your spa?

Our AQUA Day Spa signature treatment is called NIRVANA IN NOOSA. Nirvana is where you will find yourself when your body is exfoliated with our very own AQUA Day Spa products. It begins with a Cooloola sand and sea salt scrub, which leaves your skin soft and refreshed. Then, a vanilla and honey body butter full-body moisturising massage leaves your body and mind feeling enriched, relaxed, and stress-free. The Cooloola sand and sea salt scrub and vanilla and honey body butter are also available for purchase, so you can continue your spa experience at home.

Aromatherapy is an important part of the spa experience. We have our signature scent of lemon myrtle, lime, and citronella burning throughout the spa, which is the first aroma guests experience when they walk in the door. As guests depart, we spray our signature scents on our Heavenly Scent Cards for guests to take with them.

I imagine that hydrotherapy is an essential part of the spa experience as well?

But of course! To visit to the AQUA Day Spa is to step into a world of aqueous well-being, and what better way to experience that than in our unique Aqua therapy center (pictured), which provides a range of hydro or resistance pressure treatments while individual submerged lounges allow trigger point therapy via a series of gentle, warm water "multi-jets."

What is your favorite mind/body/spirit story that you'd like to share with potential spa clients?

We have an elderly guest who had difficulty walking, but after being treated by one of our therapists, he was able to walk freely again. He was so impressed that he now visits the hotel regularly just to be treated by this particular thereapist with whom he has formed a great affinity.

Do you have any suggestions for leading a healthy lifestyle?

Treat your body like a temple. You need to nourish your mind, body, and soul, so make sure you take enough time out of your life to do the things you love. It could be a simple walk in the fresh air, a bike ride through your local area, or dinner out at a fabulous restaurant with someone you love. Do what makes you happy!
