We just got word that the Sheraton Orlando North has reopened following a multi-million dollar renovation. The 390-room hotel was completely gutted and all rooms and suites are brand new. There's a new lobby and amenities include a in-hotel Starbucks, a 1,500 square-foot gym, poolside room service and flat-screen tvs in all rooms. Located just outside Orlando in the town of Maitland, the Sheraton Orlando North has easy access to all of the area's amusement parks and to the many businesses in the Orlando Corridor.

Friday April 20, 2007Starwood's Biggest Spa
Tuesday March 13, 2007
The largest spa of any Starwood property can be found in Austria. The Four Points by Sheraton Panoramahaus Dornbirn is scenically located in the Austrian Alps and is home to the Home of Balance. The spa has over 21,000 square feet of space and is spread out over three floors with just about every amenity you can imagine. Unfortunately, you will need to know German in order to look at the Home of Balance's webpage, but the multimedia tour offers plenty of visual stimulation for us Anglophones. Dornbirn is a quick drive from the German and Swiss borders and is near some truly spectacular scenery, including Lake Constance.
Funky Queens
Monday February 5, 2007
In New York, the Sheraton LaGuardia East is located in the Queens neighborhood of Flushing. In the 1980s and 1990s, immigrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan and the Chinese province of Fujian turned Flushing into a de-facto Chinatown. These days, Flushing is home to an amazing Chinese shopping mall and East Asian shopping/restaurant strips along Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue. Longtime New York Times food scribe William Gribes accurately wrote a zeitgiest of Flushing: Queens Has Less Feta, More Jellyfish. But that's not all for Queens. The sprawling borough is America's most diverse county and a destination for New Yorkers looking for good eats and cheap rents. Time Out New York recently devoted an entire issue to Queens, including the Indian/Pakistani/South American neighborhood of Jackson Heights, the Jewish/Irish/Russian/Central Asian community of Forest Hills and the Irish-Balkan-Chinese 'hood of Sunnyside.
Funky Marrakech
Friday January 26, 2007
One of the safest places to visit in Africa is Morocco. It's an exotic destination; the former stomping grounds of William Burroughs and many a 1960s hippie is also an easy place to get around for any French or Arabic speaker. One of Marrakech's most opulent hotels is the Le Meridien N'Fis, a 277 room hotel with some of the country's finest accomodations. The BBC recently put together a Marrakech day guide that takes in many of the traditional sites and many of the not-so-traditional sites:
Down on the main square, life carries on as it has for centuries though. The square is in the heart of the medina and over the years it's been a place of execution, riots and most famously, the Djemaa el-fna, which means, Assembly of the Dead, a street festival that's held there every day. Locals who come to the souks to shop then spend time in the square, watching the snake charmers or visiting the fortune tellers.
Francis Ford Coppola's Vineyard
Wednesday January 3, 2007
Francis Ford Coppola is best known as the director of the Godfather trilogy but he is also an acclaimed winemaker. Coppola's Rubicon Estate is located in California's Napa Valley—a quick drive away from the Four Points by Sheraton San Rafael. The Rubicon Estate has been in business since 1879 when it was founded by legendary Finnish-American vinter Gustave Niebaum. Coppola purchased the property in 1975 and it is now one of the biggest wineries in Napa County. Tours are offered daily (all of which, of course, include tastings) and the grounds are also home to a historic chateau, a wine-and-Coppola museum and a restaurant/wine bar. For the vicarious traveler, the well-regarded vineyard also offers an online store.
Beyond the Screening in Detroit
Monday December 18, 2006
Guests at the Westin Detroit Metropolitan Airport will soon have a unique perk of staying at the hotel: access to the shops and restaurants of the McNamara Terminal at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. As part of the Transportation Security Administration's new AAACE (Airport Access Authorization to Commercial Establishments) Beyond the Screening Checkpoint pilot program, overnight Westin guests can visit airport shops and restaurants after background checks and screening at a security checkpoint inside the airport. The program is being tested in Detroit and Dallas-Fort Worth; Westin guests will have access to restaurants including over 30 restaurants and 38 stores.
Inside Whistler
Monday November 20, 2006
The popular ski resort of Whistler, British Columbia just got some love from the New York Times. Chosen as the site for the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler is about two hours outside of Vancouver and home to the Westin Resort & Spa, Whistler. What is there to do in Whistler? Apart from the obvious (the Times helpfully provides a printable trail map), there are galleries like Black Tusk, Adele Campbell and Path Gallery, the massive bars Garibaldi Lift Company and Garfinkel's and fine dining at the Elements Urban Tapas Parlour. The Westin Resort & Spa is located directly on Whistler/Blackcomb Mountain and is also home to the Avello Spa & Health Club.
Inside Copenhagen
Friday November 3, 2006
In Copenhagen, home of Le Meridien's Palace Hotel, the New York Times wants you to know that the city is hopping in the winter. True, they use a clunky metaphor or two along the way (including a strange Lego malapropism), but the message does get through. The Times' recommendations for Copenhagen include historical boat rides from DFDS Canal Tours, drinking beers at the outdoor cafes around Nyhavn, the Michelin-starred Noma restaurant which uses local ingredients like musk ox, Greenland shrimp and Icelandic seaweed to surprising effect, the bars and electronica-spinning nightclubs of Nansensgade and of course, Tivoli Gardens. Most interesting Copenhagen landmark we did not know of: The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek antiquities museum, created by the heirs of the Carlsberg brewing dynasty.
Comin' Down the Westin
Friday November 3, 2006Atlanta's Westin Peachtree Plaza is a 73-story tower that is topped by the revolving Sun Dial Restaurant. But, you see, to get to the the Sun Dial one must ride up on a glass elevator whose window faces onto the skyline of Atlanta. In the YouTube clip above, two Westin guests show what it's like to be 73 stories above Atlanta as their elevator descends to the lobby. Truth be told, it is a great view.
Golfing in Egypt?
Thursday October 5, 2006
A post on Jaunted pointed us over to the world of Egyptian golf courses. A firm called FlyGolf has started marketing golf vacations in Egypt to Western travelers. It turns out that golf courses are a relatively commonplace site in the posh Cairo suburbs and in the resort area along the Red Sea. One of these golf courses is the 18-hole course at the Sheraton Miramar Resort El Gouna, built on its own private island.
