When in Taipei, be sure to ride the world's fastest elevator at the Taipei 101 Observatory. At speeds of 1,010mpm or about 60mph, this pressurized elevator offers the comforts of an airplane cabin and takes just 37 seconds from the 5th floor to the 89th floor observatory where you will enjoy sweeping views of Taipei city and the surrounding areas. The building is designed on the Chinese pagoda and the shape of bamboo flowers. The lucky number eight, which means blooming or success, is represented by the eight clearly delineated exterior sections of the building.

Don't spend all your time looking out the windows, there is just as much to see inside Taipei 101, such as the world's largest damper. With a diameter of 5.5 meters and weighing 660 metric tons, it was made at a cost of NT$132 million, around 4 million US.
I suggest you take the internal stairs to the 91st floor outdoor observatory where it is possible to see the clouds surrounding the building and view at close up the spire at the highest point of 508 meters. Taipei 101 can withstand gale winds of 60 meters per second and the biggest earthquakes experienced in a 2,500 year cycle. The double glazed glass curtain walls can sustain impacts of 8 tons. The Westin Taipei is a short 15 minute drive from Taipei 101, which is also home to five floors of shopping and restaurants.

Dubai is all about the future, with an ambition that's evident in its many new skyscrapers and shopping malls, but this glimmering emirate hasn't forgotten about its past. Visitors hoping to pick up some local history need only to head over to Al Fahidi Fort, which houses the Dubai Museum. Completed in 1799, the restored fort contains artifacts dating back 3,000 years, along with life-size dioramas on what life was like in Dubai before the oil wealth came flooding in. Traditional Arab houses are painstakingly recreated down to the finest detail, and scenes of the merchants and fisherman along the creek and in the bustling souk evoke a simpler era. Among the most impressive exhibits is an overview of the ancient pastime of pearl diving, including the weights and scales used to determine the value of what once once the region's hot commodity. It's an eye-opening destination for those who thought Dubai was invented some time around 1997. Starwood has properties throughout Dubai, including the Four Points by Sheraton Downtown Dubai, the Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina, and Le Méridien Dubai.

Two new Heavenly Spas have opened their doors in Hawaii. The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas opened their new spa earlier this year. It joins its sister property, The Westin Maui, which lays claim to being not only the first Heavenly Spa in Hawaii, but in the world. Now the Moana Surfrider has just opened a new Heavenly Spa in Waikiki on the Island of Oahu. While Heavenly Spas are starting to open around the world, with India, China and Dubai, all having opened new spas in the past year, it is interesting that three of the 13 now open are located in Hawaii. Could it be that the spirit of "Aloha" is just the perfect fit for the uplifting Heavenly Spa brand?

Food & Wine in South Beach

Tuesday January 6, 2009

sobefest.jpgThe South Beach Wine & Food Festival is coming up in February, which means you'd better hurry up and book your hotel and choose your events, as some of the most popular ones have already sold out. I'm personally most excited about the sushi and wine pairing, hosted by Master Sommelier Alpana Singh and featuring sushi by Chef Thomas Buckley of Nobu Miami, as well as the sherry and cheese pairing on Sunday.

The Oscars coincide with the festival this year, and the Food Network's Chef Bobby Flay will be co-hosting an Oscar Night viewing party with "Law & Order: SVU" star Stephanie March, replete with red carpet, champagne and celebrity guests from both the culinary and film worlds. As for the hotel, the Westin Colonnade, Coral Gables is close by, and an excellent place to relax and reflect on your food and wine experiences.

Discover Rotterdam's Nautical Side

Monday January 5, 2009

The largest harbor in Europe can be found in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, which has been influenced greatly over the years by its many nautical industries. The Port of Rotterdam is one of the busiest in the world, and the nonstop activity going on in the waters provides a constantly-changing backdrop to this captivating city. To get acquainted with the seafaring aspects of Rotterdam, start with the Rotterdam Maritime Museum. Just steps from the luxurious Westin Rotterdam, the museum boasts the country's greatest collection of historical objects from its seafaring history, along with artwork and interactive exhibits dedicated to the brave men and women who ply the cold waters of the North Sea. The highlight of the museum is a fully-restored 19th-century turret-ram ship called the Buffel, in which visitors can see the elegant captain's quarters and more cramped spaces for his crew. If the museum makes you want to take to the sea yourself, book yourself on a Spido harbor cruise. With tours ranging from 75-minutes to more than six hours, you'll get to experience Rotterdam as so many sailors have before.

There is no better way to discover what makes a destination unique than to attend a local sporting event. It is a great way to meet locals and see what life is like away from the regular tourist haunts. Among the biggest events of Ireland's sporting year are the All Ireland Finals which are held in Croke Park on the Northside of Dublin every September.

The stadium plays host to the finals for all of the games governed by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), but the 2 showpieces which catch the imagination of Ireland and Irish communities around the world are the senior Hurling and Gaelic football finals. These finals bring fans from all around Ireland and the world to Dublin to watch their heroes fight it out for the Liam McCarthy or Sam Maguire cups and bragging rights over their neighbours for the rest of the year!

Even if you do not have a ticket, there is a great atmosphere in the city and in the pubs close to Croke Park running up to the finals. Tickets for the final games are very hard to come by, but a visit to the GAA website can sometimes be rewarded with information on how to get tickets for some of the less high profile games in Croke Park or in one of the other county grounds around Ireland such as Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork which is a short drive away from the Sheraton Fota Island Hotel and Spa on the Eastern side of Cork City.

Wining and Inauguration Dining in DC

Friday January 2, 2009

inauguration_1.jpgAre you headed to DC for the Inauguration? If so, I hope you've got your ticket to a ball by now. (Some more tickets to the All American Ball at the Westin City Center were just made available). If not, there's always a celebratory dinner. Many of the most desirable restaurants have booked up already, but there are still a few tables available at the recently opened, Alain Ducasse helmed Adour in the St. Regis if you hurry.

Hip wine-centric restaurant Proof has a whole day's worth of options for you: during the inauguration you can enjoy an all-you-can-eat-and-drink champagne buffet brunch for $75; later in the evening there will be a $120 Inaugural dinner, followed by a separate $250 champagne ball featuring music by . PS 7's is offering a four-course prix fixe of "Illinois regional cuisine" (hopefully, not deep dish pizza) in honor of President-elect Obama. Meanwhile, Nage is fêting VP-elect Biden with a Delaware-inspired brunch — "Southern Delaware Style Chicken in a Blanket" and "Northern Delaware Scrapple and Tater Tot Hash With Fried Eggs" will be served as a Biden impersonator visits with tables.

Wherever you go, be sure to raise a glass to the city council: bars will be able to serve booze until 4am instead of 2 (but not 5 as previously announced) and food can be served all night.

Rome's Ancient Seaport

Wednesday December 31, 2008

There's no shortage of ancient ruins in Rome, but most seasoned travelers have done their time at the Colosseum and Pantheon. Those willing to venture beyond the city center can encounter some of the best-preserved ruins in all of the former Roman Empire at the Ostia Antica, a seaport town that reached a peak of 75,000 residents nearly two thousand years ago. Ironically, ancient Rome's harbor city is three kilometers from the sea. For centuries it was situated at the mouth of the Tigris River, but so much silt accumulated over the years that dredging was futile and it became landlocked. But deep water or not, Ostia Antica stands today as one of the best examples of a mid-sized Roman port town found anywhere. Its colorful frescoes, vast amphitheaters, public baths (with amazingly advanced plumbing), and rows of warehouses attest to the industrious nature of Romans throughout the ages. Ostia Antica is a short train or taxi ride from Starwood's Rome properties, including the Westin Excelsior, Rome.

Eating Like a Local in Kuala Lumpur

Tuesday December 30, 2008

KLfood.jpgKuala Lumpur, like nearby Singapore, revolves around two things: eating and shopping. The two pastimes are quite often intertwined, with hawker stands lining the sidewalks of popular shopping districts and immense food courts in the many malls and shopping districts. While it's perfectly easy to find Western-style food in "KL," you really shouldn't pass up the opportunity to try the local cuisine, which brings together Chinese, Indian and Malay, often in novel and delicious combinations.

Nearby the Westin Kuala Lumpur, visit one of the many markets, such as Imbi Market, where stall after stall offers freshly prepared specialties from around 7am until early afternoon. Get an iced coffee ("kopi peng") and look for the stalls with the longest lines — that's a sign of quality. Taste one of my favorites, beef rendang or roti chanai, or try something you've probably never even seen before.

Speaking of coffee, be sure to visit a "kopitiam," or coffee shop. More like a neighborhood hangout than a take-out Starbucks, you'll find Malay-style coffee, snacks and friendly locals eager to pass along recommendations for a great restaurant.

On a recent trip to Paris I stood on a friend's balcony overlooking the Canal Saint-Martin. "That's Chez Prune," he said, pointing to a little place on the corner with a burgundy awning. "That's where the locals go to meet friends for a drink after work." I figured it would be my first stop that afternoon, but little did I know, the charms of the Quai de Valmy and Quai de Beaurepaire, which line the pretty waterway, would be the highlight of my adventure.

This surprising canal in the 10th arrondissement sits on the fringes of Paris' busy center, but seems a world away. Just over a half hour's walk through the city, from The Westin Paris, Canal Saint-Martin makes a wonderful excursion for families looking for educational ways to have fun, couples looking for a romantic footbridge to stroll across, and even solo travelers looking for some cute independent shops.

At 95, Quai de Valmy, Antoine et Lili is a vivid emporium of quirky home goods, toys, and fashions, while just down the road at number 83, Artazart is full of art and design books. A handful of stylish restaurants line the watery route, including the ultra-fashionable Hotel du Nord, and intimate La Marine. For those who prefer to explore the canal by boat, two and a half hour tours with French and English commentary depart frequently from the Musee d'Orsay and Parc de la Villette. The fascinating system of locks that buoys the boat through the canal will have the kids enthralled. If they get bored after the third lock (there are nine in all), they're sure to enjoy the tunnel which passes beneath the Place de la Bastille. With rare Belgian beer, mulled wine, and all the usual spirits Chez Prune is the perfect way to end the day.
