We're fans of sprawling urban parks. There's nothing like having a beautiful swath of green space close to all the conveniences of the city to provide the yin and yang of a balanced life. That's why Mount Royal Park (Parc du Mont-Royal) is one of our favorite Montreal attractions. Designed by legendary landscape architect Frederick Law Olmstead, who famously created New York's Central Park, Mont Royal has it all, with miles of hiking trails, a scenic lake perfect for paddle-boating, a sculpture garden, and not one but two belvederes - structures located on a high terrace designed to give visitors commanding views of Montreal and the St. Lawrence River. If you happen to visit on a Sunday between May and September, check out the Tam Tam Jam, a group of amateur drummers who play hand drums (tam-tams) on the east slope of the mountain. Dancing is encouraged, and you just might witness a mock battle between medieval-style fighters that use foam weapons. Yeah, you might say there's a counter-culture vibe. Starwood has eight Montreal properties, including the stylish W Montréal.

Independence Day.jpgIndependence Day is one of the biggest holidays of the year for Mexicans, with millions of people turning out in town squares across the country to celebrate El Grito de Independencia. The holiday dates back to 1810, when a priest in the village of Dolores named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla inspired the indigenous residents to rise up against their Spanish rulers, whose tyrannical rule had left them on the lowest socioeconomic level. Hidalgo's legendary rallying cry, "Mexicanos, Viva Mexico!" is repeated all over the country every year at precisely 11:00 p.m. on September 16, when a government official enters the zócalo and calls out to a crowd that answers back in kind. Naturally, the event calls for a big celebration, with mariachi music, lots of antojitos (finger foods) and plenty of refreshing guava punch. Guests at the W Mexico City or any of Starwood's Mexico City properties are just a short jaunt from the main square, where the president himself delivers the grito.

Chicago has deep-dish pizza, Philadelphia has cheesesteak — and Montreal has poutine. Not familiar with this local delicacy? It's french fries topped with fresh cheese curds, gravy and occasionally other stuff. And after a night of partying, it's an ideal late-night snack on the way back to the W Montreal.

Poutine is served all over the place, but one of the best places to try it is La Banquise, a 24/7 shop where the menu boasts 25 variations on the dish, from the classic to the T-Rex, which features minced meat, pepperoni, bacon and smoked sausages in addition to the usual cheese and gravy. Delicious artery-clogging goodness. At Maamm Bolduc, a cozy neighborhood joint, there's also plenty of variation. I'd recommend the poutine Bourguignonne, an homage to the classic French dish.

The most luxurious poutine is to be found at Au Pied de Cochon, where it's topped with seared foie gras and smothered in foie gras gravy. It's also the most expensive you'll find, at $23 Canadian, although Restaurant Fusion le 940 occasionally give them a run for that money with poutines on its specials list.

Be a Judge at a Burger Bash in Brooklyn

Monday September 1, 2008

burgerbash2008.jpgThe Food Network New York City Food & Wine Festival is coming up October 9-12, loaded with great events for food lovers. One of the stand-outs is the Burger Bash on October 10: hosted by Rachael Ray, more than a dozen celebrity chefs and other hamburger luminaries will come together to compete head-to-head at the Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, for the tasters' choice award. Who's the judge? Your taste buds. Make sure your stomach is up to the challenge!

Even if you don't make it to that event, you can still join in the fun while you're staying at the W Union Square. During the festival, a bunch of restaurants in the Meatpacking District will be offering special tasting menus. Keep the burger theme going at Pop Burger, or change it up with sushi at Morimoto or Indian-tinged delicacies at Spice Market. Just be sure to ask for the "Meatpacking Eats Menu" when you make your reservation.

Fremont Oktoberfest from Seattlest 200.jpgThere's nothing like enjoying a lovingly-brewed beer with friends, and there will be plenty of that going on in Seattle this September 19-21. The Fremont Oktoberfest 2008 brings a variety of fun outdoor activities to one of Seattle's most dynamic neighborhoods, and, believe it or not, they don't all involve beer. For example, there's the Brew-Ha-Ha 5K run, a scavenger hunt, a pumpkin-carving contest, live music, a canine beauty contest, and a root beer tasting for kids or adults like me who enjoy a good root beer. But when it's time to sample some real beer, you won't be disappointed. The Stranger Microbrew Garden brings together 35 breweries pouring over 70 different kinds of beers, and beer enthusiasts can chat with the brewers and taste their finest brews in a miniature tasting mug. When it's time to kick back with a proper pint, make your way to the Buxom Beer Garden, where you can take a seat and reflect on a beery world of hops, barley, and malt. Fremont Oktoberfest 2008 is convenient to several Starwood hotels, including the stylish W Seattle.

Mexico City's Witchcraft Market

Wednesday August 27, 2008

Curative Herbs 200.jpgIf you're in Mexico City and feel like you need some good luck, make your way over to the Mercado de Sonora. This quirky market is filled with vendors selling various amulets, charms, and potions designed to protect those who possess them, or bestow upon them health, wealth, and new love. Whatever you need, basically. Herbalists sell a wide range of curative herbs (pictured) along with special "witchcraft" herbs -- and the spells used to activate them. It's a little eerie if you think about it, but I'm sure it's the happy kind of witchcraft. Right? We can't vouch for the efficacy of these ancient talismans, but the market provides a vivid window into the belief system of a population whose underlying indigenous traditions often overshadow the western beliefs brought by the Spanish colonists. The Mercado de Sonora is a short taxi ride from the W Mexico City.

New Orleans has much to offer the traveler, but two things stand out above all others: delicious Creole and Cajun cuisine and some of the best live jazz to be found anywhere on the planet. We've given a few pointers on where to dine in the Big Easy, but if it's authentic New Orleans music you hunger for, make a beeline for Tipitina's. This artistic hot spot has made the corner of Napoleon Avenue and Tchoupitoulas Street a mecca for jazz enthusiasts since 1977, and musical legends from Dr. John to the Neville Brothers have made the stage their second home, helping to define the New Orleans sound for a new generation. To catch a live performance at this classic venue is to embrace the true embodiment of New Orleans, and if the experience inspires you to pick up an instrument of your own, drop by the club on Sunday. The famous Sunday Music Workshops are back, and students and visitors can once again play and learn from some of the finest musicians in Louisiana. Sounds pretty funky to me (and I mean funky in a good way). Starwood has six hotels in New Orleans, including the W New Orleans, French Quarter.

Welcome Desk 200.jpgThe W Istanbul is housed in a handsome landmark building that dates back more than 130 years, but design elements from some of the 21st century's most talented artisans give it an air of modern luxury and elegance. The timeless experience begins as soon as guests enter the hotel, as their first view is of a Marmara marble check-in area where crystals, jewelry, carved stones, and curtains create an atmosphere of mystery, eroticism, and glamor. The front desk itself (pictured) is a work of modern art. Designed to resemble a jewelry box, it features original crystals under a cut-glass table top, an emerald tree pattern, and distinct mood lighting to strike the right note with arriving guests. The nearby SIP and Living Room lounge areas, meanwhile, feature the long, plush Ottoman-style seating areas preferred by the sultans along with contemporary flourishes like brass-clad columns, portable black partitions, and elegant wooden side contours. And of course, you're in for a feast for all the senses at the Spice Market restaurant. Light-colored leather seats and tables, oak wood trim, and a patterned ceiling ensure that your eyes will take in almost as much as your taste buds. It simply must be seen to be believed, so take advantage of one of the hotel's special offers and visit the future of hospitality in Istanbul.

Turkish Delight at the W Istanbul

Monday August 4, 2008

W_Istanbul.jpgThe new W Istanbul represents the very best of classic and modern styles, with roots in the Ottoman Empire and flourishes from the most forward-thinking minds of the 21st century. The hotel is located within the Akaretler Row Houses, a carefully restored series of buildings constructed in the 1870's by Sultan Abdülaziz to house the workers of the nearby Dolmabahce Palace. The hotel's exterior reflects the pervasive western influence felt in Istanbul in the early- to mid-19th century, with a neoclassical design, intricate stonework, and majestic wood accents. On the inside, designers created a space of unparalleled beauty, with the latest technology and amenities set against a backdrop of Ottoman sophistication. From the welcome area - with furniture upholstered with quilted turban material and classical handicrafts along the walls - to the Living Room Lounge, which resembles a harem with its romantic screens and sedir seating, no detail was neglected in creating an oasis of luxury and relaxation. Naturally, guest rooms and suites are fit for a sultan, with W Signature Beds, goose down pillows and duvets, flat-screen televisions, and marble bathrooms. But don't take our word for it, come see the W Istanbul for yourself and experience the best of Istanbul's past, present, and future.
