The brisk winter weather will undoubtedly keep many people huddled inside their warm homes this January, but a few thousand fans of independent cinema know that the real heat can be found in Utah. The Sundance Film Festival will be held January 15-25, 2009, continuing a three-decade tradition that has transformed the motion picture industry and inspired generations of filmmakers. Venues in and around Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah will screen the best new dramas, comedies, and documentaries by filmmakers from the U.S. and around the world, and if history is any guide, a few lucky festival attendees will be among the first to see a film that will go on to become an all-time classic. After all, Sundance is the place where filmmakers such as Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Soderbergh, and Quentin Tarantino got their big breaks. This year's candidates include Sophie Barthes's Cold Souls, a story starring Paul Giamatti about a man looking for his own soul; Big River Man, a documentary by John Maringouin about endurance swimmer Martin Strel; and The Cove, the powerful tale of the challenges faced by dolphins in the world's oceans. Festival attendees will schuss down the slopes of the various ski areas in the morning hours and take in screenings during the afternoons and evenings. Of course, the festival is as much about the grand parties as it is about the silver screen, but there's nothing wrong than discussing movies with friends and family while enjoying a fine meal and a glass of wine. Some might even say that's what life is all about. Guests at the Sheraton Salt Lake City Hotel will enjoy the cinematic experience of this legendary film festival.

Bangkok's Royal Elephant Museum

Friday January 2, 2009

royal elephant museum.jpgElephants were once an important part of daily life in Thailand, performing tasks that required a unique mix of strength, dexterity, and intelligence that only pachyderms possess. While most of the population prized elephants as symbols of wealth and productivity, none were revered more than the emperor's white elephants, which enjoyed the royal treatment at the Dusit Palace complex. Today, the Royal Elephant Museum provides a fitting tribute to these noble beasts, with various displays showing the influential roles the royal white elephants had in Bangkok life in the early- to mid-20th century. Ironically, while depicted in paintings as completely white, the royal elephants were actually reddish-brown to light pink color. Still, they were prized enough to join the royal elephant stables, avoiding wartime duty to instead serve ceremonial purposes. Those lucky elephants. Starwood has properties throughout Bangkok, including the nearby Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel & Towers.

"I want to assassinate painting," declared a 34-year-old Joan Miró in 1927, the year the artist kicked off a decade-long attack on the medium. He rejected traditional techniques, delved into collage, and heralded the physical qualities of material, creating works such as "48," on unprimed canvas during a winter in Paris when he shut himself off from the rest of the world. Twelve of the artist's series from this decade of redefinition and reinvigoration now hang at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the exhibition "Joan Miró: Painting and Anti-Painting 1927-1937."

The vast exhibition traces Miró's creative output through this ten year period by presenting works from every single year, beginning with the "Paintings on Unprimed Canvas" series and ending with "Still Life with Old Shoe," the colorful piece that brought the artist back to the realm of the still life, and catapulted him into the next phase of his career.

Miró may have set out to assassinate painting, but in my humble opinion these works are just delightful. Go see them now, because on January 12, they all come down, and if you live in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut, why not make a weekend out of it? The Sheraton Manhattan at Times Square and Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers are both offering Tri-State area residents ten percent off regular rates. Both hotels are just right down the street from the museum. Watch the video to get a glimpse of Miró's oeuvre.

Transvaal Museum 200.jpgSince some of the finest fossils in the world are regularly recovered in Africa, it makes sense that one of the finest archaeological museums should be located there. The Transvaal Museum of Natural History in Pretoria has one of the most extensive collections of Plio-Pleistocene fossils to be found anywhere, a group which includes the earliest hominids unearthed from the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. But in addition to saying hi to some distant relatives, you can also marvel at the painstakingly preserved remains of mammals, birds, reptiles, and other scary prehistoric creatures that inhabited Africa long before people came along. Those traveling with children should make an appointment with the Discovery Center, in which the little ones get a hands-on experience with some of the museum's more interesting fossils and the tools used to unearth them. The Transvaal Museum is a short jaunt from the Sheraton Pretoria Hotel.

It's a feast of lights in the desert, with more than 7,000 flickering luminarias lining the walkways of this gorgeous park now through December 23, 2008. The exhibit Chihuly: the Nature of Glass, for example, places the fantastical class sculptures of Dale Chihuly amid the plants and wildflowers, lending a whimsical air to a natural place. If you appreciate spectacular views, you will love the Singapore Cable Car. Connecting Mount Faber on Singapore's main island with Sentosa Island across the Keppel Harbor, the cable cars provide a stunning panorama of nearly the entire city-state. The ride from the Jewel Box Station at Mount Faber to Sentosa Station takes about twelve minutes, which doesn't seem like such a long time, but when you consider that the cutting-edge gondolas feature not only 360-degree windows, but glass floors as well, it's clear that you'll have a Singapore experience intense enough to stay with you for a while. While at Sentosa, make a day of it with a visit to Fort Siloso, one of twelve coastal batteries that made up Fortress Singapore during World War II. It's an austere counterpoint to a decidedly 21st century city. Starwood has two hotels in Singapore: the Sheraton Towers Singapore and the St. Regis Singapore.

The Natural Wonders of Panama

Thursday December 4, 2008

Crab%20200.jpgPanama is known for its famous canal that connects two oceans, so it only makes sense that it would have a world-class research facility dedicated to both Atlantic and Pacific marine ecosystems. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute is a bureau of the Smithsonian Institution that is dedicated to providing advanced research facilities to some of the world's best marine biologists. However, you don't have to be a marine biologist to get a glimpse at some of the amazing biodiversity that the institute has been studying in Panama. The Centro de Exhibiciones Marinas (Marine Exhibition Center), located just fifteen minutes from downtown Panama City, includes aquariums with both Atlantic and Pacific marine life as well as a variety of exhibits detailing the native flora and fauna. Two trails lead through a tropical dry forest - a nearly extinct Pacific ecosystem - where visitors can encounter sloths, iguanas, armadillos, and all kinds of birds. A sea turtle pond, meanwhile, provides a close-up look at these intelligent and graceful creatures, while a patch of mangrove forest along the rocky shore shows the amazing diversity of life in the Caribbean Sea, especially when visited at low tide. The Centro de Exhibiciones Marinas is a perfect stop for those who appreciate the country's unique position between two seas, and it's just minutes away from the Sheraton Panama Hotel & Convention Center and the Four Points by Sheraton Panama.

Visit Amsterdam's Hidden Church

Monday December 1, 2008

Museum Amstelkring.jpgThe winding streets and serpentine canals of Amsterdam conceal many out-of-the-way treasures that tempt visitors to discover them, and one of the best is tucked away in the oldest part of town. Amsterdam's Museum Amstelkring awaits intrepid visitors with a treasure trove of art and artifacts. Located in one of the oldest canal houses in the city - dating back to the mid-1600's - Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic) is a museum of art as well as a hidden church. As the story goes, Roman Catholics were forced into hiding in the late 16th century, resulting in the construction of several clandestine churches throughout the city. Stealthily built atop an old, traditional canal house, Our Lord in the Attic is one of the finest surviving examples of the hidden churches, providing a safe house of worship for Dutch Catholics well into the 17th century. But in addition to its religious significance, the carefully-preserved house is a great example of a wealthy person's home from the era, with Delft tiles, wooden furniture, and narrow staircases. A visit here is a reminder of the progress the country has made in becoming among the most tolerant nations in the world. Starwood has two hotels in Amsterdam, the Hotel Pulitzer, Amsterdam, and the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel & Conference Center.
