seattlenight.jpgSometimes you just can't get to sleep. Unfortunately, Seattle doesn't have many options for insomniacs, especially downtown. But there are a couple places near the W Seattle and the Sheraton Seattle Hotel if you know where to look.

Kooky Cyber-Dogs is only open until midnight, but it's a great spot for a snack. The eccentric Tatiana is the entertaining owner, preparing an eclectic menu of sausages and vegan veggie dogs.

For a classy nightcap, Vessel is your destination. The sleek bar is a scene on the weekends, but on weeknights it's a quiet respite with inventive, expertly crafted cocktails and a small but tasteful food menu. It's open 'til 2 a.m., as is the Alibi Room down in the lower levels of Pike Place Market, where you can get a more substantial meal and a locally brewed beer.

For those who really can't sleep, there's The Night Kitchen. A haven for insomniacs, third-shifters and the after-bar crowd, the doors open at 6 p.m. and don't close until 9 a.m. Get a gourmet burger, eggs benedict or just coffee by the hour. (Not that you need more help staying up.)

One of the most salient aspects of the Los Angeles Arboretum & Botanic Garden is that it basks in a balmy Mediterranean climate. Cool mild winters and warm dry summers permit the cultivation of both native species and hundreds of exotic ones from around the globe. Whether hailing from the South African Cape, Chile, Australia, or the Mediterranean region itself, year-round, there is always something of particular interest. An entire horticultural world beckons within the 127 acres of the gardens. Collections are roughly grouped by The Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia, and encompass bamboos, palms, tropical rarities, desert species, herbs of the world, rose gardens and citrus groves. The Arboretum's famous peacock (see video) adds moving color to the landscapes while keeping the snail population under control. Water features like Baldwin Lake host migrating bird species and offer refreshing coolness. Plant society sales and meetings occur all through the year, offering rare specimens not easily found at most nurseries. It's a great resource for anyone who has the desire to delve deeper into the cultivation of particular species, whether it be orchids, chrysanthemums, ferns, daylilies, or into the precise arts of bonsai and ikebana. Increasingly, the Arboretum is focusing on the unique challenges of gardening and landscaping in a dry climate, with demonstration gardens and opportunities to learn about green living, water conservation, and organic gardening. These valuable lessons can be taken home and put into practice on even the smallest piece of Eden. Visits to the Arboretum can be planned from any of Starwood's 23 Los Angeles area hotels, including the nearby Westin Pasadena or the Sheraton Pasadena.

Seasonal in Edinburgh, Scotland

Monday August 30, 2010

urbanangel.jpgDespite its deep-fry and haggis reputation, Scotland is a cornucopia of fresh ingredients from land and sea — and both restaurants and the public are increasingly embracing seasonal foods as a way to eat healthy. You'll have ample opportunity to explore both sides of Scottish cuisine during your stay at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh, but I'm going to focus on the healthy stuff here.

The best place to see the seasonal movement in action is at the Edinburgh Farmers' Market, which takes place on Saturdays in the shadows of Edinburgh Castle year-round. Get a look at the current crop of meats and produce, sample locally made cheeses and pick up a loaf of crusty bread to slather with fresh butter and preserves.

Or perhaps let Urban Angel do the cooking for you. This cafe, now with two locations, bases its menus on what's available locally and organically at the moment, delivering some fantastic breakfast and lunch dishes that don't break the bank.

Seasonality takes drinkable form at Demijohn , a "liquid deli" that turns fresh-picked local ingredients into wines, vinegars, liqueurs and other things, and allows customers to choose the bottle each comes in, from just a taste up to a year's supply. Elderflower vinegar made from flowers picked in late June is ready now, and the store is serving blackcurrant ice cream made with fresh fruit and blackcurrant gin.

Taste the Wine of New Mexico

Monday August 30, 2010

Wrap up the summer in celebration of the grape at New Mexico's premier wine festival, located 20 minutes north of Albuquerque in the historic town of Bernalillo, over Labor Day weekend.

The 23rd Annual New Mexico Wine Festival at Bernalillo runs September 4-6, 2010, and is the biggest wine celebration in the state, drawing some 20,000 oenophiles who come to taste the fruits of more than 20 wineries' labors. If New Mexico doesn't strike you as the likeliest wine-producing state, you may be surprised to learn that the state's first grapevines were planted on the banks of the Rio Grande in 1629. By 1920, however, drought and Prohibition had all but brought winemaking to an end--until family-owned wineries started sprouting up in the late 1970s, ultimately creating the wine country that exists today. Your festival entrance fee includes a wine glass that allows you to taste away; you can also purchase wine by the bottle or case. Most of the state's wineries will be present, including Black Mesa Winery (see video above), Anasazi Fields Winery, and St. Clair Winery. In addition to the vino, there are performances throughout the day, with an emphasis on soul and R&B, arts and crafts, and great summer foods. As a bonus, you can explore the fest from the comforts of the brand new Sheraton Albuquerque Airport Hotel, which opens September 2, 2010, and boasts dramatic views of the Sandia Mountains.

For an explosion of music, dance, pageantry, and so much more, start making your way to West London. That's where, from August 29-30, 2010, the annual Notting Hill Carnival takes place, filling the streets with 20 miles of vibrant, colorful costumes in the celebration of all things Caribbean. The festival goes back to 1966, when Notting Hill residents of West Indian ancestry organized a small gathering to share their cultural traditions with their neighbors. It has grown exponentially over the ensuing decades, and today is the largest street festival in Europe, welcoming more than a million revelers from all walks of life. This year's festival promises to be one of the biggest ever, and if you plan on checking it out, you'd better bring your appetite. With hundreds of Caribbean food stalls, you'll eat your fill of jerk chicken and conch fritters before you know it. But you'll need the fuel to shake your stuff along with a sea of costumed dancers, whose intricate headdresses, jewelry, and body painting signify traditions from Trinidad, Tobago, and all across the West Indies. Music is at the heart of the festival, and you'll groove to calypso, soca, steel pan, samba, reggae, jazz, hip-hop, and more. Before long, you'll be infused with the island spirit that pervades this little patch of the Caribbean in England. Starwood has hotels throughout London, including the Sheraton Park Tower, London.

Listen Up at LouFest in St. Louis

Friday August 20, 2010

Don't be too quick to pooh-pooh the inaugural LouFest: It may be the first time St. Louis is trying to stage this major 2-day concert event, but it seems to be doing it right, with impressive bands like Built to Spill set to take the stage on August 28 and 29, 2010.

That band will join 17 others in the heart of the city in Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in the US (it's 500 acres larger than Central Park) and a spot that's easily accessible from the Sheraton St. Louis City Center Hotel & Suites. The lineup isn't as overwhelming as, say, Lollapalooza's, and thank goodness for that. With only one band performing in each time slot, you won't have to miss anyone. On Saturday, Built to Spill warms up the stage for the evening's closer, Broken Social Scene. On Sunday, things get even better, thanks to performances by the Fruit Bats (hear a sample in the video above), Alejandro Escovedo, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, and the night's headliner, Zooey Deschanel's She & Him. The Nosh Pit food court will sell better-than-your-average fest eats, including blue fin tuna tostada, lobster spring rolls, Southwest smoked trout flatbread, vegan cookies, and blueberry Italian ice. Better still, the fest has a strong eco angle: More than 20 vendors will be on hand to teach you about conservation and clean energy, and a plastic-conserving water bottle filling station means you won't have to fork over cash to get a new bottle of water.

Dining in the Dark, Wherever You Are

Friday August 20, 2010

If dining by candlelight is more romantic than eating in a fully lit room, imagine how romantic dining in the dark must be! Uh, right. Actually, there are several restaurants scattered around the world that give diners a taste of what it's like to eat blind. Rather than a romantic thing, it's meant to show how much your other senses come into play when your eyes are out of the picture.

The trend started in Zurich, Switzerland, at Blindekuh, where much of the staff is blind and you enter the pitch-black dining room in a conga line behind your server, so as not to bump into anything. Dinner is accompanied by an unseen a cappella group. make your way there from the Sheraton Zurich Neues Schloss.

Blindkuh inspired Montreal's O.NOIR, a couple blocks from Le Meridien Versailles, remains a popular date night destination and boasts the biggest menu of those I've come across.

After watching the sunset in Santa Monica, head over to the stylish Opaque, a few minutes from the Sheraton Delfina Santa Monica. Not everyone loves the experience - or the prices -- but many love the sensory deprivation experience. And this may be the only restaurant in LA where you won't see a single cell phone.

800px-Lalbagh_Glasshouse_night_panorama.jpgAll vacations should be a walk in the park, and your next jaunt to Bengaluru will be one, indeed, should you visit the spectacular Lalbagh Botanical Garden.

The lush paradise is located in the center of Bengaluru (the British referred to the city as Bangalore; the name reverted to its long-standing Indian name in 2007), and now covers 240 acres. It began as the private garden of Hyder Ali, a ruler of the Southern Indian Kingdom of Mysore, in 1760, and became a government botanical garden some 100 years later. It's now a multi-purpose gem, acting as a place for scientific study, conservation, botanical artwork, and tourism. Stone walls surround Lalbagh, which features a mix of roads, paths, shaded spots, and - of course - plants, some 1,854 species to be exact. You'll see everything from pink Cassia trees to the Kigelia Pinnata, a tree with sausage-like fruit, to a beautiful rose garden. Be sure to visit the stunning Glass House (pictured), built in 1889 to commemorate a visit by the Prince of Wales and to be used as a site for acclimatizing exotic plants; today, it holds the garden's famed biannual flower shows, which occur each January and August. Plan a winter-time getaway to coincide with the January show, and the December 2010 opening of the Sheraton Bangalore Hotel at Brigade Gateway.
