"You can even make a roaring lion stand still to be photographed," Winston Churchill told Yousuf Karsh, after the young Armenian photographer captured the British prime minister in all of his glory in 1941. The prized portrait hangs beside dozens of the photographer's other celebrated works at the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston. Karsh 100: A Biography In Images commemorates the 100th anniversary of the late photographer's birth, and includes a long string of iconic images.

Audrey Hepburn glances gracefully over her shoulder, hair pulled back in a simple pony tail, long neck encased in a regal high collar. Pablo Picasso looks intense beside one of his nudes, and Ernest Hemingway embodies the classic invincibility in a fisherman's sweater. Karsh's photos capture the essence of his subjects marvelously. With closed eyes and parted lips, actress Anita Ekberg radiates sexuality, while with one wide open eye of Jacques Cousteau gleams with a thirst for adventure and promise for the world beyond. This not to be missed photography show runs through January 19, 2009.

Just a twenty-minute drive from downtown Boston, element Lexington offers the perfect way to recharge after a full day in one of the nation's greatest art museums. While you're celebrating the birth of Yousuf Karsh, celebrate your own birthday with element's "Pay Rates Equal to Your Birth Year!" promotion.

National Heritage Museum 200.jpgThe Boston/Lexington area is certainly not wanting for museums, but after a few too many hours spent gazing into glass display cases, everything starts to look kind of the same. That's why the National Heritage Museum is so refreshing. This unique destination is dedicated to telling the story of the nation using rich compelling narratives, dynamic displays, and interactive hands-on activities. The sheer breadth of subjects covered by the museum is truly inspiring, ranging from the historical - Paul Revere, George Washington, and the American Revolution - to the cultural, with exhibits on everything from neon signs to roadside diners and that classic American highway, Route 66. There's even a section called Made in Massachusetts that features objects from the early 18th century to a few of the things we use today. Whether it's a selection of toys, such as a child's red fire engine (pictured) or a bewildering assortment of clocks and timepieces, the common thread linking them all together is their usefulness in everyday life. Guests at the nearby aloft Lexington, element Lexington, or any of Starwood's Boston/Lexington-area properties might enjoy this innovative perspective on the lives of Americans through three centuries.

Scout_Museum.jpgI have a confession to make. There's a skirt in my closet that's the perfect shade of green, has a really cute box pleat in the front, and a waist which has lost all of its elasticity from being stretched to its limits time and time again. It's part of my old Girl Scout uniform, and I still wear it. Often. Those of you who also hang on to these happy remnants from youth, a badge encrusted sash, a tattered handbook, or even just memories, like the first time you pitched a tent in the wilderness, or identified that set of tracks in the snow, will enjoy visiting the National Scouting Museum, in Irving, Texas. In addition to a knot-tying wall, a virtual reality bike and kayak racing mountain, and an exhibit on famous Boy Scouts like Neil Armstrong and Michael Jordon, the museum is home to dozens of works of art including many by Norman Rockwell. The American artist, famous for his Saturday Evening Post covers, illustrated several covers for the Brown and Bigelow Boy Scouts calendar, and worked as art director for the Boy Scouts' magazine, Boys' Life, between 1913 and 1916.

Come November, the brand new element Irving will be the perfect home base on a trip to the area. Nineteen minutes from the airport, and just five minutes from the National Scouting Museum, the eco-conscious hotel will feature public spaces inspired by nature, and a swimming pool. So if you were never quite able to earn that swimming badge, here's your chance to get a little practice in.

Retro Food In Chicago

Thursday April 3, 2008

When the new Element Chicago opens in June 2009, everything will be shiny, clean and very 21st century. Fortunately, you can get a big dose of nostalgia at nearby Superdawg, Chicago's last remaining full-service drive-in.

Superdawg opened in 1948, and quickly became a landmark thanks to the big winking statues of two hot dogs on the roof. But the restaurant's real claim to fame is its signature Superdawg Chicago-style hot dog. The sausage is made from a special secret recipe only for them — it's a little thicker and juicier than your standard dog, with a distinctive snap to the casing, and it's topped with all the standard trimmings. They're served in a retro box with a side of crispy crinkle-cut fries right to your window by a carhop (or go inside and order if you like) — add a black cow float on the side and it's like stepping back to the Fifties.

For more retro fun, make your way to Hala Kahiki, one of the country's best tiki bars. Strong, froofy drinks abound; I recommend the Mai Tai or Hukilau — or go for a flaming Volcano if you've got a friend to help you drink it (and the number of a cab to take you home!) There's no food to help soak up the booze, but Gene & Jude's, another throwback hot dog stand, is just around the corner.
