When you think of Las Vegas, you probably envision casinos, nightclubs, and outlandish stage shows, but a spectacle of a different kind awaits just outside of town. The Hoover Dam is a marvel of civil engineering, having provided pollution-free power to thousands of homes and businesses throughout the area since it was completed in 1936. Located in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, about 50 kilometers from central Las Vegas, it provides a fascinating contrast to the glitter of the strip, and it just might turn out to be the most memorable part of your visit. Tours of the dam provide an inside look at the mechanics of it all, from the colossal 221 meter concrete arch-gravity walls - which stretch from Nevada to Arizona and create Lake Mead - to the 17 massive turbines that generate 4000 GWh of electric power a year. Visitors also screen a film about the dam's construction, which is filled with interesting facts about the dam, such as how it was completed more than two years ahead of schedule. Another interesting fact is that the Hoover Dam spans two time zones, so you can wander from Pacific Time to Mountain Time and back again in time for dinner on the Strip. Starwood has two Las Vegas properties: the Westin Casuarina Las Vegas Hotel, Casino & Spa and the Element Las Vegas Summerlin.

Do Something Different in Vegas: Take the Hoover Dam Tour
Monday February 22, 2010Take a Walk Through 16th Century Europe at the Texas Renaissance Festival
Friday September 18, 2009
The old expression "Everything is bigger in Texas" is usually trotted out to describe steaks, ranches, and trucks in the Lone Star state, but I had no idea it applied to renaissance festivals as well. But apparently it does, as the Texas Renaissance Festival is one of the biggest gatherings of its kind in the world, drawing legions of historic reenactors every fall to the tiny town of Todd Mission, Texas, an hour's drive from Houston. This year marks the festival's 35th anniversary, and it's celebrating in full Texas style with themed weekends from October through December. Beer fans won't want to miss the Oktoberfest Celebration on October 10-11, 2009, which features a trip to Bavaria and the Black Forest to sample traditional German beer, bratwurst, and polka. The ruffians of the high seas come out on October 24-25 for the Pirate Adventure, when the Pride of Bedlam invades the shire and stakes out the Sea Devil Tavern for their swashbuckling shenanigans. And the Highland Fling on November 14 and 15 will bring out the Scotsman or Scotswoman in every visitor, as the Queen of Scotland oversees a weekend of Scotch ale, Scotch eggs, and plenty of bagpipe music. So check your inhibitions at the gate and enter a Renaissance world of fantasy and history. It's a side of Texas you've never seen before. The Texas Renaissance Festival is less than 45 minutes away from the element Houston Vintage Park.

More Destination Spotlight - Boston/Lexington - Thoroughly Contemporary in Historic Lexington
Wednesday July 22, 2009
Just because Lexington figured into Colonial history doesn't mean its dining scene is stuck in the past. The town sports plenty of places where the only revolutions are on the plate — a perfect match to the element Lexington. Palio's Italian Grill, for instance, is no stodgy, red sauce Italian joint. It serves up small plates, wood-fired pizzas and an antipasti bar as counterpoint to well-aged grilled steaks.
Likewise, Lexx updates the classic neighborhood tavern with a nicely contemporary menu that offers enough of a range of cuisines to suit a large table of diverging appetites. Moving even further down the casualness scale, The Upper Crust not only dishes up award-winning gourmet pizzas, it also boasts a bar with an active after-work cocktail scene.
Destination Spotlight - Boston/Lexington - Hiking a Historic Trail
Tuesday July 21, 2009Lexington is the site of the American Revolution, and, many say, the birthplace of our fair country. While that was a long, long time ago, visitors may take in some of that original spirit of Americana by walking the town's historic trails, right along some of the same paths that the famed Minute Men tread towards eventual liberation. Back in "the day," it was the scene of much bloody battling, but today, you can walk and learn along the Battle Road Trail. The Battle Road Trail may ring a bell from your history class as a kid, since it was the site of Paul Revere's capture and is adjacent to the birthplace of famed author Henry David Thoreau, among other historic events. Locals love this beautiful, still-natural area for its seeming inability to be crowded, even in seasons when you might expect otherwise.
With its state-of-the-art gym, working out while you stay at the element Lexington, located near the trail, can help you prepare for your walks, so you will be more than a minute-man stamina-wise. Have you walked any other historic American trails that are worth visiting?

More On the Cupcake Trail
Friday April 3, 2009
I never expected cupcakes to be such a resilient trend, but years later, they're still hip and happening. Here are some spots around the country to indulge in a bite-sized sweet fix.
Magnolia Bakery in New York arguably touched off the fad. Its moist cupcakes piled high with frosting got a boost from "Sex and the City," leading to long lines at its three locations. The Rockefeller Square store is just two blocks from the W Times Square.
The Cupcakery is keeping Las Vegas happy with fun toppings and flavors like lemonberry, raspberry with champagne frosting and pecan-coated German chocolate. Better yet, they'll happily deliver to the element Las Vegas Summerlin and other Starwood properties.
Baltimore's Charm City Cupcakes offers beautiful treats in more than 40 flavors, ranging from classic red velvet to caramel turtle, plus two dozen flavors of two-bite mini cupcakes. The bakery is just a few blocks north of the Sheraton Inner Harbor.
Kara's Cupcakes in San Francisco merges two two dessert trends with its fleur de sel cupcake, filled with with caramel and topped with chocolate ganache and a sprinkle of salt. Pick one up while you stay at the St. Regis San Francisco.
Destination Spotlight - Boston - A Prized Photographer at The Museum of Fine Arts
Friday October 17, 2008"You can even make a roaring lion stand still to be photographed," Winston Churchill told Yousuf Karsh, after the young Armenian photographer captured the British prime minister in all of his glory in 1941. The prized portrait hangs beside dozens of the photographer's other celebrated works at the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston. Karsh 100: A Biography In Images commemorates the 100th anniversary of the late photographer's birth, and includes a long string of iconic images.
Audrey Hepburn glances gracefully over her shoulder, hair pulled back in a simple pony tail, long neck encased in a regal high collar. Pablo Picasso looks intense beside one of his nudes, and Ernest Hemingway embodies the classic invincibility in a fisherman's sweater. Karsh's photos capture the essence of his subjects marvelously. With closed eyes and parted lips, actress Anita Ekberg radiates sexuality, while with one wide open eye of Jacques Cousteau gleams with a thirst for adventure and promise for the world beyond. This not to be missed photography show runs through January 19, 2009.
Just a twenty-minute drive from downtown Boston, element Lexington offers the perfect way to recharge after a full day in one of the nation's greatest art museums. While you're celebrating the birth of Yousuf Karsh, celebrate your own birthday with element's "Pay Rates Equal to Your Birth Year!" promotion.

More Destination Spotlight - Boston - A Refreshing Take on U.S. History in Lexington
Tuesday October 14, 2008
The Boston/Lexington area is certainly not wanting for museums, but after a few too many hours spent gazing into glass display cases, everything starts to look kind of the same. That's why the National Heritage Museum is so refreshing. This unique destination is dedicated to telling the story of the nation using rich compelling narratives, dynamic displays, and interactive hands-on activities. The sheer breadth of subjects covered by the museum is truly inspiring, ranging from the historical - Paul Revere, George Washington, and the American Revolution - to the cultural, with exhibits on everything from neon signs to roadside diners and that classic American highway, Route 66. There's even a section called Made in Massachusetts that features objects from the early 18th century to a few of the things we use today. Whether it's a selection of toys, such as a child's red fire engine (pictured) or a bewildering assortment of clocks and timepieces, the common thread linking them all together is their usefulness in everyday life. Guests at the nearby aloft Lexington, element Lexington, or any of Starwood's Boston/Lexington-area properties might enjoy this innovative perspective on the lives of Americans through three centuries.
