A weekend spent at the Aloft Austin means putting on the cowboy boots and loosening the belt buckle a notch or two - right? Not exactly. This Tex-Mex heaven is a lot greener than you may expect. The birthplace of Whole Foods lays claim to some pretty exciting restaurants that have your health - and the planet's - in mind.

"Only" is an oft-repeated word when it comes to Ruby's BBQ's many claims to fame: It's the only place in Austin that slowly smokes its BBQ in oak wood-fired authentic brick pits; the only BBQ restaurant serving all-natural, hormone-free brisket; and it only serves side dishes it makes in-house from fresh produce. Its chunky mayonnaise potato salad gets rave reviews.

Texas-Tuscan haven Vespaio gets up close and personal with its meat as well, actually butchering the locally-raised lambs and pigs that make their way into its spicy Italian dishes - the wood-fired Toscana pizza features housemade Tuscan pork sausage. A back garden provides fresh herbs, and pastas, including gluten-free options, and breads are handmade in-house.
The 16-table
Wink Restaurant & Wine Bar
keeps it fresh-as-can-be as well, relying on local produce, herbs, and cheeses, with an emphasis on what's in season. This member of the slow food movement is so serious about sustainability that it prints the names of the many Texas farms it works with at the bottom of its menu, which features fresh, inventive dishes like grassfed bison NY strip on barley pilaf with hen of the woods mushrooms and dried cherries.

Introducing Aloft Milwaukee Downtown

Friday February 5, 2010

Aloft Milwaukee.jpgWhether you're in town for business, pleasure, or a little of both, you'll find plenty to keep you entertained in Milwaukee. Wisconsin's largest city boasts multinational corporations, a thriving arts scene, and, as of January, a great new hotel as well with the opening of Aloft Milwaukee Downtown. Located in central Milwaukee, this exciting new destination is just minutes from some of the biggest attractions in "Brew City." Get your bearings with a stroll along the scenic Milwaukee Riverwalk, a pedestrian walkway along the Milwaukee River dotted with public art installations and lined with shops, galleries, and restaurants. Then take an hour or two to appreciate the masterpieces on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum, whose famous Santiago Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion houses a reception hall, auditorium, café, store, and 10,000 square feet of gallery space. Motorcycle enthusiasts won't want to miss the Harley-Davidson Museum, which has bikes that date back to the company's founding in 1903, while the Pabst Mansion provides a vivid glimpse at the private life of one of the country's most famous beer barons. But whatever you do, be sure to set aside some time to explore the hotel's many features, from its Splash indoor pool to the re:mix lounge, where you can work, play, and relax with a drink from the w xyz bar. Alcott_house.jpgWhen I read Little Women many years ago, I fell in love with Louisa May Alcott and the lives she and her sisters led. Recently, I discovered Orchard House, the colonial era home in Concord, Massachusetts, where the Alcott family resided from 1858 to 1877. It was here, at a small desk that her father built for her, that Alcott wrote her beloved novel. As guided tours progress through the handsomely outfitted house, the story of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March comes alive.

Almost all of the furniture and household objects are original, and offer an exceptional image of how a modern Victorian family lived. See the dining room where the Alcott sisters staged plays for their guests, the parlor where Anna Alcott was married in 1860, and the kitchen where the ladies of the house did the laundry and the cooking. Bedrooms feature delightful wall paintings by May Alcott as well as dozens of portraits depicting the whole family. A quick drive from the invigorating Aloft Lexington, Orchard House is a wonderful place to visit on your New England adventure.

Traveling in winter can be risky. All it takes is one snow storm to throw everything helter skelter. One such recent deluge wreaked havoc on my own vacation plans and left me stranded in Montreal. Lucky for me, Montreal Airport was just a quick, free shuttle bus ride away, providing the perfect place to revive, refresh, and have a little fun after a long, frustrating morning at the airport.

Catch the shuttle at stop number 3, right in front of arrivals, and you'll be whisked off to your home away from home in mere minutes. With pop music pumping over the speaker system and a perky front desk attendant, my arrival at the hotel was invigorating. After a quick check in, I headed up to my room for a hot shower (Montreal is freezing in December!) and a quick rest before heading down to the bar for a yummy personal pizza by the fireplace. Defined by colorful, modern decor, the lobby offered several different places to settle down and get cozy with some friends, and featured a pool table and a long counter to plug in your laptop and hook up to the hotel's free wifi. Those really looking to live it up could take a dip in the indoor swimming pool located right across the snow-covered courtyard. But my personal favorite was the snack area where an assortment of treats, teas and coffees could be purchased around the clock. Next time I get stranded at the Montreal-Trudeau Airport I'll be looking forward to a little getaway at Aloft.

ASU Art Museum Be Realistic.jpgIf you're looking for fine art in Tempe, head to Arizona State University, where the ASU Art Museum serves as a laboratory for thinking about and enjoying art in innovative ways. An extension of the school's Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, the museum boasts an impressive collection of contemporary art, new media, ceramics, prints, and arts from Arizona and other parts of the Southwest. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum hosts rotating exhibits such as Nowhere to Hide: Three Artists in the Desert (through February 20, 2010), which features the work of three artists who live in Phoenix and have explored the idea of sustainability. Carrie Marill's Be Realistic: Demand the Impossible (pictured), for example, provides a glimpse of what a sustainable world might look like if all of our best ideas were put into action. Frequent events at the museum keep things interesting as well, ranging from First Saturdays for Families - a great way to get the kids interested in art - to the 14th annual Short Film and Video Festival (April 17, 2010), an outdoor event that celebrates the creative endeavors of people with different visions and levels of experience. The museum is a stone's throw from three Starwood properties in Tempe: Aloft Tempe, the Four Points by Sheraton Tempe, and the Sheraton Phoenix Airport Hotel Tempe.

Introducing Aloft Mount Laurel

Friday October 30, 2009

Aloft Mount Laurel.jpgWhen it comes to prime locations, it's hard to top the brand new Aloft Mount Laurel. Located between Philadelphia, just 25 minutes due east, and Atlantic City, an hour's drive to the southwest, it's the perfect destination to combine a day of American history with an evening of gambling and shows. To celebrate its grand opening, this inspiring hotel is offering some great introductory rates. At just $99 a night on weekdays and only $64 a night on weekends, it won't take much to experience the best of both Philly, AC, and the charming area of Mount Laurel itself. You might start with a visit to the U.S. Mint, which not only makes the coins that jingle in your pocket, but also guards the country's gold and silver assets. Or swing by one of my favorite quirky attractions in New Jersey, Lucy the Margate Elephant, a giant, gray "zoomorphic" elephant located just south of the Atlantic City Strip. If you need some high culture in your life, take in a performance at the National Ballet of New Jersey, just five miles from the hotel. Whatever you wind up doing, you'll find all the creature comforts when you get back to your room, from the Aloft signature bed and free wifi to a high-tech entertainment center and a collection of Bliss Spa amenities in the bathroom. Coast to Coast Driving in the USA

Friday October 30, 2009

The best way to see America is to hit the open road. No country on Earth has as many distinctive cities and towns scattered across such a spectacular landscape. And to cap it off, there's a Starwood Hotel waiting to welcome you every step of the way. Here's a ten-day itinerary that'll take you from coast to coast, through the Heartland of America. Today, we'll take you through the first half of the trip and return tomorrow with more tips on driving cross-country in the US.

Start off in style at the Four Points by Sheraton Manhattan Soho Village in New York City. It's just around the corner from the Holland Tunnel, the gateway to I-78. Next morning you'll be in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in three short hours. Check in at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel, then go learn about history at the National Civil War Museum. Primed for a visit to historic Gettysburg, detour there on your way to Indianapolis. Just be sure to arrive at The Westin Indianapolis in time for dinner, because Shula's Steakhouse is one of the nation's best. Fueled with a prime cut, and a fine sleep, you'll be ready for your next stop, St. Louis. Stroll along the Mississippi River, see that iconic Gateway Arch, and enjoy cocktail hour at your home for the night, The Westin St. Louis. Next morning set out for Kansas City. Just south of the city center, Aloft Leawood is surrounded by great golf. After a few hours on the links, head into town for barbecue and jazz. But don't stay out too late, tomorrow's drive to Denver is the longest haul yet.

minnesota_vintage.jpgThe Twin Cities really know how to do retro. From rockabilly wear to Eames-inspired furniture, you'll find everything you need to recreate the era of your choice, from the 1950s through the 1980s, in Minneapolis and St. Paul's myriad cool, independently owned boutiques. One region with a particularly concentrated cluster is the St. Paul Retro Loop, a group of five shops in the Merriam Park East neighborhood.

Beginning with Up Six, the loop's southernmost stop housed in a row of brick storefronts at 157 Snelling Ave. N, you'll find a mix of vintage clothing, furniture, records, shoes, and accessories. Just around the corner at 1287 Selby, Lula is a treasure trove of crinoline ball gowns, flirty cocktail dresses, pill box hats, fur-trimmed coats, and colorful printed scarves. Stock up on a suitcase's worth, and then head up to University Avenue, where at number 1910 you'll hit the jackpot for Mod Squad era stuff at Swank. Space-age finds straight out of The Jetsons overflow onto the sidewalk. A half mile up the road, there's a den of art deco to Danish modern delights at Classic Retro @ Pete's, and a bit further on, more Scandinavian treasures, including a range of glassware and pottery, and a well-selected mix of furniture fill Succotash.

The St. Paul Retro Loop is just six miles from Aloft Minneapolis, so after a full day of shopping you can sink a few balls, like a 1960s pool shark at the re:mix(SM) lounge.
