Green Bay isn't just home to the Packers: It also lays claim to a few wineries that have plenty to sample in totally relaxed atmospheres.
Captain's Walk Winery "takes the snobbery out of wine" while still providing a "light-hearted tasting education." In addition to tasty standards like Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Merlot, you'll find offerings like the 7 Seas, a crisp and fresh wine made from seven grapes. And while tasting one-ounce pours is fun, an even better bet is to order a platter of Wisconsin-made cheeses and truffles and a glass of wine and relax on the winery's front porch. While not actually in Green Bay, the Von Stiehl Winery is just 40 miles away from the Aloft Green Bay in the town of Algoma, and well worth the trip. You'll want to be sure your visit includes a tour, which is offered seven times daily from May through October and includes a visit to the century-old underground limestone caverns where the wine ferments and ages. Built five years after the Civil War, and previously home to Ahnapee Brewing, the building is listed in the Federal Historic Registry. In addition to doing plenty of tasting - from Gold Medal-winning Cabernet Sauvignon to brandy-fortified Cherry Wine made from Door County cherries - you may luck upon one of its many events, from live music to its beloved grape-stomping competitions.
