While sushi gets all the attention, soba noodles are one of the most important foods of Japan, and the earthy buckwheat noodles can be an economical way to fill up while touring Tokyo. Don't forget to slurp!
One of the oldest soba restaurants in Tokyo is Kanda Yabu Soba, opened in 1880. It's rather traditional and very picturesque — and also very popular, so it's not the cheapest, but worth checking out for the soba and other classic dishes. By contrast, Souhonke Sarashina-Horii dates back to 1789 and originated one of the popular types of noodle, sarashina or "white" soba — yet manages to be a bit cheaper than Yabu Soba. Kudan Issan also offers ample variety while keeping prices low. They're both within reasonable distance of the Sheraton Miyako Hotel.
If you're up for a culinary adventure, you could also try learning how to make buckwheat noodles from scratch at the Tsukiji Soba Acadamy, just a couple blocks away from the Tsukiji Fish Market.
