With feature films about Allen Ginsberg and Joan Jett topping the lists at this year's Sundance Film Festival (through January 31st), it's clear that 20th century counter-culture is back. Directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman have built a career on creating non-fiction movies, and their latest work Howl is based on the true story of Allen Ginsberg and the "obscenity trials" over the publication of the poem which gives the film its name. It's sure to be the film of the year for Beat Generation enthusiasts.
Those who love rock and roll will be delighted by The Runaways, a wild biopic about the teenage all-girl band that took the seventies by storm. Starring Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie and Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett, the film is directed by Floria Sigismondi whose credits include music videos for Marilyn Manson, Christina Aguilera, and the Cure. Then there's The Radiant Child, a documentary on Jean-Michel Basquiat; Skateland, a drama set in Texas at a 1980s roller rink, and Nowhere Boy, which focuses on John Lennon's early teens. Relive the highs and lows of that glorious last century on the big screen in charming downtown Park City, then mull it all over from the heated outdoor swimming pool at The St. Regis Deer Crest Resort.
