In the early 20th century, Chicago was a major center of candy making. While the number of factories churning out confections has waned, there are still a number of candy companies in the city — and chocolatiers in particular. In fact, when the wind blows right, the heady aroma of roasting chocolate envelops much of downtown Chicago thanks to Blommer Chocolates in River North.
Blommer supplies raw ingredients to chocolatiers nationwide, and has a small candy store in the factory that sells chocolates and other sweets. Don't expect ambiance and romance, though — for that you need to visit Vosges Haut Chocolat's original boutique on Armitage Avenue in Lincoln Park. Home to the now-legendary Mo's Bacon chocolate bar, the boutique also proffers exotically spiced truffles and rich hot chocolate. My personal favorite, though, is Bon Bon, a small shop in the North Side neighborhood of Andersonville. Bon Bon's flavors are bolder and more adventurous than Vosges (and occasionally a bit racier, too).
Chicago Chocolate Tours offers a convenient way to explore the city's wealth of scrumptiousness. If you're staying at the Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago, there's a walking tour that starts right across the street and takes you to some of the chocolate shops on or near the Magnificent Mile.
