Eastern Europe has long been a hotbed of jazz music, and nowhere is that more evident than at the All Souls Jazz Festival in Krakow, Poland. Billed as Europe's oldest jazz festival, it takes place every year around All Souls Day (November 2) and features dozens of performances by artists from Poland and around the world. This year's 10-day festival kicked off on Friday, October 30 with a show by local quartet Funk De Nite, who brought their unique brand of funk-infused jazz to the Dwor Czeczow Culture Center. But perhaps the most interesting event of the festival occurs on its last day, Monday, November 9, when a Jazz Holy Mass is held at Kosciol Dominikanow Church. There, respectfully-attired visitors can listen to the joyful sounds of jazz while gazing at the ornate features of this 13th century architectural masterpiece. If you're used to hearing jazz in dark nightclubs, you might find the venue as enlightening as the music. Most of the venues are just minutes from the Sheraton Krakow Hotel.
