Kolkata is one of the world's most bustling cities. Once the capital of British-ruled India, this vast metropolis is filled with grand Victorian monuments and majestic Hindu temples. Wherever the pulse of the city takes you, you'll surely be greeted by unforgettable scenes. One particularly striking place to visit is Kolkata's New Market aka Sir Stuart Hocc Market (pictured). A sprawling marketplace comprised of thousands of vendors, this historic destination is open every day except Sunday and makes an excellent starting point for a day devoted to shopping and entertainment in Kolkata.
From the fabulous ITC Sonar, Kolkata, take a 15-minute taxi ride to the 19th century red brick building, which houses the vivid market. Succumb to the sites and sounds of the place. Here, long strands of fine stones hang in the stall of a jeweller, while over there dried fruits and nuts fill glass jars, flower blossoms form yellow and red mountains in low woven baskets, and glittering bangles cover a table in bright bands of pink and emerald.
Now that you're dizzy with all the excitement of New Market, cool down with a leisurely stroll down Jawaharlal Nehru Road. Turn left on Park Street and you'll encounter a landmark building known as Queens Mansion. Among the many businesses, restaurants, and art galleries that fill the elegant structure, Ananda is an acclaimed boutique that specializes in the hand woven saris of Bengal. Block-printed designs dance across the fine swathes of cotton, chiffon, and silk that grace the mannequins. With sari-laden bags in hand, head to Bhallas Carpets and select a wool, hand-knotted Kashmiri design to ship back home. Once that's properly placed beneath your coffee table, you'll always have something to remind your of that extraordinary trip to Kolkata.
