One of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century is on display at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Dead Sea Scrolls: Words that Changed the World (open through January 2010) offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to gaze upon a collection of hand-written documents that form the underpinnings for Judaism itself. The scrolls were found between 1947 and 1956 by Bedouin goat-herders in a series of caves off the coast of the Dead Sea, and they represent 900 separate documents that were written between 200 B.C.E. and 68 C.E. Among the documents on display at the ROM are pages of the oldest known version of the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament), whose discovery ignited a flurry of scholarship by theologians that continues to this day. Elsewhere in the exhibit is the intriguing story of how the scrolls were found, and the extraordinary measures taken to preserve these priceless, 2000-year-old religious texts. However long you spend studying the scrolls, save a few hours to explore the rest of the museum, whose collections showcase everything from dinosaurs to East Asian art. It's a fantastic museum, and it's convenient to several Starwood hotels, including the luxurious Le Méridien King Edward.
