A Pint in Transit on Helsinki's Pub Tram

helsinkipub.jpgMost of Helsinki's trams whizz around the Finnish capital in shades of green or cream. But there's one historic model, dating from 1959, that's painted a bright, shiny fire engine red. It's known as the Sparakoff Pub Tram, and not only is it fun way to get around town while taking in some sites, it's a bar! So while you're soaking in the leafy streets, authentic squares, and fabulous architecture of this splendid Scandinavian city, you can tip back a few traditional Koff beers or a Sinebrychoff Gin cocktail in the velvety comfort of a classically designed tram car.

From the exquisite Hotel Kämp, Helsinki, part of Starwood's Luxury Collection, you can board at Railway Square, right in front of the Fennia building. Or, hop on at any of the tram's four other stops, Linnanmaki, Opera House, Old Student House and Market Square. The tour lasts just under an hour and takes you past landmarks like the Ateneum Art Museum, Pitkasilta bridge, Töölö Bay, the Olympic Stadium, and Finlandia Hall. The tram departs six times a day, Tuesday through Saturday, all summer long starting in mid May and continuing through August 29. So if you're in Helsinki this month, be sure to hop aboard the Spårakoff Pub Tram. I can't think of a happier way to spend an hour in dazzling Helsinki.
